    Build it, or buy it?

Well, that's two votes for Synology (which was the prebuilt I was looking at already). Thanks to @NelizMastr for bringing up transcoding, I forgot to mention that in my post. I do use PLEX, so that's a thing. If my receiver can deal with the encoding of the actual file though then that isn't needed? What mean to ask is, if I make sure that the files saved to my DNLA share are already formatted in a way that my device understands then PLEX isn't going to "do anything" to them when I go to access them "and everything just works". Am I right?

    Build it, or buy it?

I'm wanting to build or buy a NAS. Primary uses will be to back up my gaming desktop, serve Movies/TV and music to my A/V, access those files remotely (I travel frequently with work), and allow sharing of files with a couple friends (FTP?). I don't need a ton of space (10TB should be more than enough), so figure a 2 disk RAID setup is likely. I don't want to spend "much", and every time I try to put something together with pcpartpicker the cost tend to climb rather quickly. Looking for suggestions. I have no problem with a prebuilt solution, than may even be preferable for ease of setup and maintenance.

Want to add a second SSD, and do RAID 0

Hmm, survey seems to say "don't bother with the RAID 0" ... I don't really feel like doing a full reinstall of everything right now, so I guess I'll just add the drive. At some point when I do a fresh install I'll do RAID, but I think you're right that I won't really care about the speed boost. Thanks all replies!
  4. I bought a second SSD for my system (another 500 GB Samsung EVO) because I'm tired of constantly running out of space for games. I want to add this to my existing similar drive in RAID 0. I have an MSI Z170a Gaming M7 mobo. Will I need to reinstall Windows 10 when doing this, out can I just "merge" the drives and have it redistribute the files between them?
  5. I came to see if this was posted already...thought it was my big chance to get a WAN Show shoutout! Oh well...

    Mechanical Keyboard Club!

When my K70 RGB LUX w/MXbrowns died of alcohol poisoning last week (turns out it couldn't handle an entire tall-boy of local beer) I figured I could make it a week with my crap Logitech KB120 emergency backup keyboard so that I could buy on Prime Day. The sale didn't disappoint and I'm not the proud owner of a K95 Plat w/MXspeed. First time I've had these switches (I had tried them out in a store before). I'm not missing the bump, and actually find it better to type on. Being a little quieter is nice as well. Sale price was good ($200 CDN), though it came straight out of money I had set aside towards a new chair when the Herman Miller Cosm comes available.

    Software Guard Extentions

I just noticed a motherboard driver available for Intel Software Guard Extensions. I'm guessing that I'm seeing this now due to a recent bios upgrade. I can't really see if this is something useful for me to install. Could this cause more harm than good?

    Holiday discharge or not?

When I leave I make sure nothing is left charging at home. It's not a battery life thing, just about fire safety. Charging batteries is one of the more likely ways something could start.

July 7, 2017 - The WAN Show Document

I'm looking forward to the "all AMD budget gaming rig from Dell" that Linus alluded to.

Anyone Looking for a Linus Tech Tips Beanbag Chair?

Is he the expert because he can fit in a standard bag? Also @LinusTech the pictures are a little unawesome, can I get a better idea of what that "red" colour looks like? I'm tempted, and can just drive over to pick one up easily enough.

RX 480 running at super high temps

Well, unless this is only under synthetic "stress test" type loads, I'd think it's too high. And even the best fan would annoy the shit out of me running at that speed. I just double checked that I wasn't imagining things, and under a good 1080p gaming load mine sits mid-sixties temp with a fan speed that's half of yours.

RX 480 running at super high temps

OK, that sounds hot to me then. Have you applied your own overclock to it, or is this "as shipped"?

RX 480 running at super high temps

Hmm. How long have you had it? Have you cleaned the heatsink? I think we're talking about the "non-aftermarket cooler" type here, and blower fans can go pretty hard. What's the ambient room temperature? Other system temperatures? edit: My 480 is the MSI Gaming X version... don't think I've seen it over 74 degrees (and that was very much an exception). It isn't the blower style though, so not really comparable.

Looking for a new office chair

Yea, my current chair was purchased as a "stop gap"... it's honestly a piece of junk after two years (I'm 6'3", 200lb ...so big, but not a giant). I may just sit on it a bit longer and buy the Aeron or Mirra. I have a friend who doled out the big money on an Embody, sat in it when I was visiting recently. It's a simply awesome chair.
