Ithanul got a reaction from Mxyzptlk in BOINC Pentathlon 2023
Hmmm, stares at main rig; stares at old GTX960.
If there is room, hail Mary it. GTX960, time for ya to crunch ya life away again! In honor of Hertz!!!! (if wondering, he is the chap that was my mentor and got me into F@H/BOINC). This the little 960 he gifted to me to use in OCN's F@H team event in the past (not sure if they still do it over there). Time for this GPU to crunch again if I can shove it into something.
Wake time little GPU.
Yes, I smack a darn AIO on a 960.
Hmmm, maybe I can shove my old x99 Xeon into a board for a short bit.

Congrats to All! LTT got 3rd place overall in this year's Pent!
Welcome to the 2023 Pentathlon
Dates: 05 May 2023 00:00 UTC - 19 May 2023 00:00 UTC
https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/start.php
The Pentathlon is an annual event for several BOINC teams to compete across five disciplines (five different BOINC projects) to gain points and win medals. Several teams, but only one team comes out as the winner. The event last for over two weeks. If you up to the challenge, come on and join the team in competing in the pentathlon and see if your hardware can handle the heat.

Yeah....Einstein can be a problem child at times. There be some months with no issues getting WUs then....it just be like, nope, no WUs for you.

Okay, instead of fighting with Einstein, I have thrown the 6700k and 5950x at NumberFields

Numberfields we've slipped to 3rd from 2nd. A reminder that Numberfields with half decent CPUs is actually quite good. I find them to go surprisingly quick on really old (2008/2009) Xeons for whatever reason (they're 5-6x faster at NumberFields per core task than my 4980HQ at roughly same clock speeds). I've got some minor bunkering going on with an offline system processing that will probably show up tomorrow, though I'm not a huge producer, along with a couple that completed while starting Einstein bunkering on my only GPU system.

I'm now switching to (MeerKAT) only on Einstein, in the time other projects have been pending validation (1-2 hours) I've had 6 WU's from that project validated. So i will bunkering those on my Nvidia Rig for now.

Yep, I remember in one former BOINC Pentathlon that their work unit server legit went like belly up because it just could not take all the requests.

It's still insane to me that my 6-year-old consumer motherboard can do this with a simple BIOS update

FYI: For those who plan to run Einstein on their gpu's, I would get some tasks downloaded in advance of it starting, as their servers tend to struggle. That way your gpu's won't be sitting idle while waiting for the server to catch up. Probably hold of on releasing bunkers right away too, just to spread out the server load.

There isn't much different between now and then, fundamentally it's just install BOINC and add a project creating an account while doing so if necessary. The problem with the Pentathlon is that the events/projects are different every year so there isn't much that can be done to keep current and well constructed guides for it.
The main post on the first page for this has links to guides for a few of the events, ideally we would have one for each by now but we don't however like above not much changes other than which project you are adding and going to the project website to change preferences to match event requirements.
BOINC is a massive collection of projects that are all similar but all slightly different, or vastly different as some require installing Virtual Box. Some things just aren't easily distilled down to very short easy guides, not everything can or is painless and simple to get setup well but this is more unique to the Pentathlon and not BOINC.
Every year return participants get better at handling it but we all still end up asking questions and asking for advice, particularly as hardware changes and so do the projects as well over time.

It seems I still have no tasks on one of my PCs, good thing I didn't mess it up on the other pc. Hopefully it starts back in a few hrs.

Just dropped all the bunkers I had. Family in town this weekend so I’m not monitoring much. Just wanted to shout out everyone for the monster efforts. It’s crazy I can bunker on a 2070 for two full days and still just be a fraction of what we drop in and hour! Every little bit counts boys!
