Just finished this and it is the balanced view that was needed and basically reflects my opinions.

I vaguely mentioned my concerns with GNs video narrative in an earlier post and this quite neatly dissects it, particularly in terms of the claims of objectivity mixed in with a (conscious or unconscious) subjective opinion that runs through the whole video that leads the audience. The claims of objectivity feel almost self-righteous in that context. Also covers my opinion on errors nicely (owning up to his own).

It also doesn't let LMG off the hook for the things I considered to be the most concerning to come out in the last week.

    Good job Dr Cutress.

The fact something that covers my opinions adequately takes an hour-and-a-half-long video essay basically shows how useless short-form discourse on this kind of thing can be 🤣. Why am I even posting this?

What I dislike the most of this transition, is the way EA forces you to move to their broken EA App.

Your origin launcher working fine? Here is an ad for our new app that you cannot close or skip, that prevents you from interacting with settings or your games. Reinstalling origin or trying to use an older version? Nope, EA has hidden a flag/program that splashes the same ad on your screen.

I can understand depreciating old software and not providing support, but surely making a working program non-functional is a dick move.

There is no perticular reason for the 12-pin to exist. it doesnt offer special current capabilties. and Nvidia decided to spec choke it with adapters.

one can use a single 6+2 pin on the 3070. and you could use a single 8-pin EPS for the 3090 and 3080 while offering more current capability than the 12-pin. while also having the advantage of standardizing 12v powercables.

Rent-A-Worker reacted to Dargenfire in Ryzen may well make 2 Gamers 1 CPU economically viable
    (TL;DR at bottom)

So, all the hype around Ryzen is starting to cool off. As I staved off boredom today, looking back through older Linustechtips videos, I came across the 7 Gamers 1 CPU video and decided to watch the original instead, going all the way back to the 2 Gamers 1 CPU video.

Watching this video reminded me of the time when this video had just come out and, being a teenager without a six-figure income, I had tried to find out if it was cheaper to make this rig instead of two identical performance-matched rigs. In short, the answer was no, with the CPU being the main cost restriction. The price delta going from a consumer 4 core up to an 8 core was too much on Intel's side, and AMD's FX 8xxx or 9xxx offerings simply wouldn't run that well on 4 cores per rig.

This stumbling block made me a little bit sad, as the idea of sharing certain components between two rigs to save money seemed like it had a lot of potential.

But here comes Ryzen. While we should be taking the pricing rumours with a grain of salt, all I can do is wait and hope that AMD will make the right move and force Intel into a pricing war.

    So without further ado…

I chose an i7 6900K on Intel's side because AMD has been keen to compare their 8/16 top model Ryzen CPU with it, and their benchmarks show they are fairly equal in terms of performance.

As You can see from the parts list, by only changing the necessary components between a 2 PC rig and a normal rig, the 2 PC rig is just over double the price of the single rig. This defeats the cost benefit of the double rig.

But what if we went with a Ryzen CPU for both rigs? This will involve a bit of guessing, as there is no set price on Ryzen CPUs or on any AM4 motherboards as of yet. For the CPUs, we’ll go with the rumoured USD $500 for the 8 core and USD $350 for the 4 core. For the AMD motherboard, we’ll go with a worst case scenario pricing-wise, and price it at USD $200 - Roughly the same as the X99 motherboard (enthusiast platform) used in the Intel double rig.

On AMDs side things get more interesting. There actually is a substantial saving going from an individual rig to a double rig. This is due to AMDs (theoretically priced) offerings. These rumoured prices follow the business model of getting more bang for your buck as you buy higher tier models (while the jump from a 6700K to a 6900K is over double the price). This, combined with the fact that the AM4 platforms unifying these different models means there will be no delta in motherboard pricing. This results in the possibility of 2 Gamers 1 CPU now being a viable money saving option, even with the added cost of an unRAID Plus License.

Of course, this is all hypothetical. This could well go down the drain if AMD prices Ryzen similar to Intel's current offering. But hey! One can hope!

What are your thoughts on this?
(Please let me know if I've made a typo or mistake somewhere)

    TL:DR
(Going from rumoured pricing of USD$500 and $350 for Ryzen's 8-core and 4-core CPUs respectively)
A Ryzen based 2 Gamers 1 CPU machine offers a substantial per-rig discount over a Ryzen based normal rig, while Intel's current offerings mean that an Intel based 2 Gamers 1 CPU machine is less economically viable per-rig over an Intel based normal rig. Ryzen may well make 2 Gamers 1 CPU a lucrative possibility.

    My analysis:

The New report by WireCutter.com finds half of Kids Head Phones tested did not restrict volume to the promised limit. The group also reviewed the headphones ability to reduce background noise, like when you are on a plane or in a car. Without noise cancellation the natural tendency is to turn-up the volume to hear over the background noise, carrying the Risk of Hearing Loss.

Only 4 of the 30 sets of headphones tested blocked significant amount of outside sound. Those are:
Etymotic ETY Kids $49 USD Puro IEM200 $29.99 USD Direct Sound YourTones $119.95 USD Nabi Headphones $69.99 USD This doesn't just effect kids, as hearing loss in men and young adults is problem as well. The study does focus on kids headphones but also proves that buying quality headphones is worth it for anybody.

    From the New York Times:

    How the test was conducted:

They played Cold Water from Major Lazer for 21 seconds half of the 30 headphones went passed 85 decibels with the highest at 114 decibels.

Pink noise was played to test if 85 decibels is the limit for the headphones. 1/3 go past 85 decibels with the highest at 108 decibels.

    WireCutter:

From Wire Cutter Sound: waves enter the ear and vibrate the eardrum, which in turn moves the middle ear bones (malleus, incus, and stapes) and causes the fluid and tiny hairs inside the cochlea (inner ear) to move. Those hairs stimulate nerve cells that send a signal to your brain, which it interprets as sound.

That is right! Apparently, there are no fail safe mechanism in place for the newly released Apple MacBook Pro 13 and 15inch, if you plug 2 or more power adapters into it by mistake. Say, you are at the library with another friend with the same system, and you exchange cables/adapters, and accidentally plug his charger in with yours (just a possible example), your MacBook Pro will no longer charge your battery, ever. It seems that the charging circuit breaks when you plug 2 chargers in.

This is based on a YouTube video from the channel: EverythingApplePro, an Apple fan channel (who said that the $300 Apple book is a great buy). The channel has over 2.7 million subscribers.
In this video he tests plugging multiple chargers on the MacBook Pro 13 and 15 (he also noted that the Apple power adapters don't come with the USB type-C cable... you need to buy that separately as well)

You can watch his experimentation here (Source):

    [update]
Apple help documentation, says that the MacBook Pro will draw power from the adapter delivering the most power:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207256
Clearly, that fail safe did not work. But it could be a manufacture error that happened on its 2 Macs, the 13 inch and 15inch (very unlikely).
