  1. Hi there, finally got to troubleshooting Ubuntu again today. So the Laptop is a Lenovo Legion 15ARH05 82B5009NGE. I couldnt find the exact release date of this line of the Lenovo Legion AMD Series, but I guess it was released about 1,2 years ago / announced 1,5 yrs ago respectively. This makes sense, since the rumoured/paper released 1660Ti and RTX 2060 variants of the AMD Line were supposed to be available mid 2020 (and werent, when I bought my model in the summer). - It has a 15,6“ 144Hz 1080p display (not the slightly cheaper 120Hz one, which might be the „standard“ for drivers and hence the reason why I cant adjust brightness?) - Ryzen 4800H - GTX 1650 Ti - 16 GB DDR4 Ram - 1/2 TB NVME (Windows) - 1 TB NVME in the secondary slot that the laptop offers (partitioned into 1/4 TB for Linux Ubuntu to be separate and 3/4 TB to be shared between Win10 and Ubuntu) The result of the command ‘uname -a‘ was the following: ‘Linux Chris-Laptop 5.8.0.-44-generic #50~20.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Wed Feb 10 21:07:30 UTC 2021 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux‘ ————— This was helpful, I found alot of threads with people having similar issues from ~10 months ago and onwards. In the 3rd quarter of 2020 people had problems getting a stable experience at all, with Ubuntu being the most stable option. https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxhardware/comments/hjgmfa/how_to_get_linux_to_work_on_a_lenovo_legion_5/ The trackpad not working has already been discussed in the above linked thread. i found this synaptics driver from May 2020, so its probably not an updated version: https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/xf86-input-synaptics/ I didnt find anything display-brightness- wise. If you could tell me how drivers are being updated by Ubuntu / the Ubuntu user, I have no problem being patient for a while, until updates are shipping. I mean the whole OS was free for me after all, so I dont wanna seem ungrateful Ill check the nvidia drivers tonight. Graphics drivers are (if I recall correctly) the only ones, that were shown in the Ubuntu menu under „additional drivers - tab“. thanks for your time and help, chris!
  2. Hi, I‘ll hopefully be able to get to it today. Dual boot has worked since Sauron has helped me, so I had to rely on Win10 for work these last few days. Ill get back to you asap. Will do, I‘ve already checked out the drivers in the Ubuntu menu and seen various (like 6) drivers that seemed like graphics drivers. I’ve already wondered how the integrated vs dedicated graphics will play out in Ubuntu, but I guess it just uses the BIOS setting? I‘ll get back to you with all the details asap as stated above. The laptop is fairly new, Lenovo Legion 15 AMD version, 4800h + 1650 ti. I think it was released like 1-1,5yrs ago but I‘ll provide all the necessary info asap. Thank you so much for your help guys! It is much appreciated, honestly! greetings, chris
  3. sorry mb ! Sauron u da real MVP, its running now. Although I'm having trouble again ^^ Trackpad isnt being recognized and screen brightness cant be changed haha, but at first glance Ubuntu looks cool for sure! anyways, thank you so much for dealing with me here, I shouldve thought about SecureBoot myself. Ubuntu isnt as Plug&Play as I expected, but the issues mentioned above are concerns of another day.
  4. No such option in the Lenovo Legion 15" BIOS. Boot Mode is UEFI, USB Boot is enabled, as well as AMD Secure Boot - if that could have anything to do with it.
  5. Alright I'll check that out too. I did follow a guide on how to install Ubuntu, which is why i wiped the secondary drive for it (nothing important was on it), disabled Win10 Fast Boot (though only within Windows) and made sure to not do Win Updates after the install. That being, because the guide mentioned that updating or installing Win10 after the Linux Distro would "fk with" the Linux booting process. Im just confused since boot.sdi sounds like an unpacked like "image file" - I clearly have no clue, but it just seems like its unfinished business, despite the Installation being successful.
  6. Hey there Sauron, thanks for your reply. I chose the normal (not minimal) Installation, logged into the network, made an account etc., no error messages my problem is that i dont know what the basic commands are / linux data names and types. I just wanted sth that was gonna be more private, less of shoving updates down my throat, and no freezing while im just doing basic MS office work. The new Macbooks look great but apparently theres a swapping issue - I'll have to research that a little more, before pulling the trigger. Thanks for the help! (ill check out GParted :)) Greetings, Chris
  7. Hi there! Win10 has driven me nuts lately, so I thought I'd just try out Ubuntu for once and give Linux a chance. I chose Ubuntu, since I thought it'd probably have the most broad hardware compatibility. I have an extra 1TB NVME drive in my Lenovo Legion Laptop. I installed Ubuntu onto that drive from a USB Stick, went through the installation etc. When I start my Laptop I'm greeted by the Grub command console, instead of booting into the OS. I googled this issue and so I tried to investigate what drives and partitions this console detects and where the data is located, that I'm apparently supposed to set as its root location, followed by letting GRUB bootloader know, where "vmlinuz" is. The command "ls" showed: (proc) (hd0) and (hd0,gpt`1-4´) - hd0, as well as gtp 2 and 4 had "no file system detected" - gpt3 is my windows ssd - so the drive that came preinstalled with my Legion Laptop. That leaves (hd0,gpt1) as the drive where Ubuntu was installed to. According to linuxhint.com I should find the boot directory and identify vmlinuz and initrd, which are the required files to boot correclty. However, I cannot find a boot directory as seen in the instruction, which I could then search by typing "ls (respective drive name)/boot". Instead, I find boot.sdi and to that I couldnt find any solutions online. I hope yall can help me :) I just want to retrieve the NVME drive, which is now formatted for Linux and isnt detectable, hence not reformattable under Windows 10. *rant inc* I thought Linux in general allowed for a more "soft learning process", but I guess I just drew the unlucky card again, just as with my Windows 10, that keeps freezing or has MS Word randomly crashing on a 4800h, 16 gb Ram machine since like 94 different NVidia Drivers/Windows Update Versions/BIOS Versions - no matter how you configure / update / reset the machine or whatever. People are hatin' on Windows Vista, but that was - and I dont mean this sarcastically - a true joy for me to use in comparison to the endless amount of BSODs etc., I've had on 2 different Lenovo Win10 Laptops, be that an Ultrabook/Gaming machine, as well as on my self-built Skylake 6600k Gtx 1070 machine. I'm savvy enough to get by, but I dont want to troubleshoot first anymore, just so I can work . *glances at Macbook* *rant over* Anyways, I hope you can help me retrieve my 1TB drive that I unsuccessfully installed Ubuntu on, which is now of course formatted in a way that doesnt allow for it to be detected in Windows 10. So now I cant just reformat it -.- Little frustrated lately, so I hope you can forgive me for this rant :D Thank you so much for your time and greetings, Chris!
  8. personally as a 144hz 1440p user, id recommend you to go 1080p 144hz and be happy about having 2 screens. that also comes with benefits for work. and still make sure you got dual channel 16gb ram (other than that a 2600 / 1060 6gb should be aight, right?)
  9. Get a b450 board, Ryzen 5 3600. That should make around 300 $. leaves ya with 150 bucks for either - perfect ram for that system (B-die) - good 32gb ram + maybe a good cpu cooler - 16 gigs of ram and noctua cooler i run the 3600 myself with 32gb ram on a b450 board. i produce music / photo and video edit / work and game on this machine. its amazing for the money! edit: (google B-die finder, if youre willing to put in the work - that could get ya even better performance)
  10. hmm.. ill save up then and make it a summer decision, since I cant seem to make up my mind right now. thanks for your help ! Ryzen 7 4800H / 3000 series nvidia sounds amazing to me
  11. Generally, do you guys by chance know when 3000 series from nvidia is coming out / generally expected to make it to the laptop market? edit: just if you know by chance, if not, I shall obviously google this myself. thanks so much for your time and input so far! ?
  12. that sounds like the best solution to me too. I have found some options by now, namely: - lenovo S740 yoga; 15 inch, octacore H series Intel processor, 16gb ram, gtx 1650 performance wise this'd be enough for anything I do and its 2in1 as well. However, there is no high refresh rate option available, and I'm unsure regading - cpu throttling - ryzen being more powerful in multitasking (which is great for DAW and Adobe suite I guess), but less power efficient. not sure which trade-off to take here - it doesnt offer a high refresh rate option the blade 15 on the other hand lets me choose between a 1660 ti / 2060, each with a high refresh rate screen. But it doesnt offer touch on 1080p; id have to go for 2070 to get the 4k touch option kinda weird situation right now, I think ill just sleep a couple of nights over all this. it is quite a bunch of money considered to being spent both great options, and for some people that might be perfect. I have tried the iPad lifestyle and Im just annoyed at having to move files back and forth, not finding notes cuz i dont remember which device I wrote it on. iOS just doesnt cut it. with larger files (photoshop or premiere mobile) its a hassle to get them off / to the iPad. idk. I just want 1 device to do it all, and if i have to make a sacrifice ill probably ditch the touchscreen / pen / 2in1 option. although its quite saddening to see, that its 2020 and laptop manufacturers dont offer a high refresh rate 1080p touch option for what i consider high end devices with the craziest of prices, one should consider spending on a laptop
  13. That is a good point, especially since its always more bang for buck when investing into desktop hardware. Its also easier replacable and all - I totally get that. I guess me personally, I dont really need a laptop thats that powerful, in the sense that I cant deliver work or sth that I have a deadline for. On the other hand its just the same old laptop I got now, except for a brighter, high refresh rate screen and a gpu, that doesnt make the occasional premiere and counter strike session unbearable. What I could do without - most probably - is the pen / touch function. What do you think of an external monitor solution, that would not only provide my laptop, but also the desktop with that kinda function.
  14. guess that doesnt exist -.- what I can do is get like a razer blade 15 with a 4k touch screen, but I dont think that that resolution is useful on a laptop. tricky situation. I mean I get that apple doesnt sell a laptop like that, since they also want you to buy their iPad Pro, which is an amazing product imo. But the other companies, I dont really get it. slightly bulkier than an ultrabook with a 144hz, bright 2in1 1440p display would be amazing. Basically a lenovo x1 yoga with a dedicated gpu and higher refresh rate.
  15. hey, ty for the answer! this is exactly what I want performance wise. just with 2in1 functionality and in 15 inch
  16. Hey guys, looking for a laptop that is sufficient for my mobile DAW and premiere/after effects needs. I guess 1660 / 2060 ish does it. (apart from premiere, its mostly CS and LoL). I wanna switch to single device, so it'd have to replace my ipad pro as well. So I guess im looking for a 120 / 144hz razer blade 15. but is there a laptop thats basically that, but 2in1, with a pen as well? I use the pen for marking up and taking notes on thousands of pages in adobe acrobat. It doesnt need to be an ultra book, but shouldnt be too bulky and "gamery looking". I post this here, since I couldnt find any product like that (lenovo, msi, razer etc). So its kinda like a question about the market in general. Do you think my use case is just too rare? (needing 2in1, to actually hand write on the laptop; but the latter is also like a creator machine) Thanks for your time, Chris!
  17. Hey guys, Ill make it short. First off: thanks for taking the time. Thinking of buying a new laptop. I produce music, and make music videos too. I have a powerful desktop if things should get real sticky (that Ill use, say if things get laggy or should I require faster export times; or other example, mixing and mastering my songs). For work I use adobe acrobat, word, excel, outlook extensively and do note taking / reading on an ipad pro (10.5 120hz). Since Im used to having the latter, a high refresh rate, bright screen would be amazing. My plan is to just ditch all the devices I got now and get 1 object that just does it all and period. Im sick of moving data around and not finding notes or reminders, cause devices dont sync etc etc (or apps just log you out after an update; like outlook on iOS). What can you recommend? "dream" laptop - bright, high refresh rate, touch screen; pref 1080p or 1440p - optimally 2in1 design (for writing on the screen, like on paper) - powerful CPU (thinking of H series, with a Throttlestop "power saving" profile for when im not plugged in); preferrably new ryzen tho (cheaper / energy efficiency? I'd have to read up this topic though, so dont worry about intel/amd too much now) - dedicated GPU (1660 ti - 2060 ish? I would not go for max q, since I think it takes too much of a performance hit) - pen - good touchpad, and keyboard - solid IO - excellent cooling - that if I use like a "save energy" profile under windows / equivalent manual setting in Throttlestop - doesnt make any noise when idle (library) or when in DAW (recording vocals) You got any ideas? I greatly appreciate your time and help! Greetings, Chris
  18. Hey guys, recently played a few League of Legends games. All of a sudden my 2 screens go blue ish, cant really describe the color. The PC was still running and all of a sudden started making beep sounds, probably like 5-10 in a row, no pattern or pauses or sth. After about 10s the game was back up and running. While that lost me the matchup, im more worried bout the pc haha. Since Ive never had this happen (compared to ALOT of "usual" BSOD bs like memory management -> thanks win10) what was that? I mean the pc just returned to flawless 144hz gaming after that? doesnt make any sense to me and I couldnt find anything on the web. The beeping sound came from the speakers, not the motherboard! Any ideas where to start troubleshooting? Id be super thankful. (r5 3600, 8gb single channel (waiting for black friday), gtx 1070, b450m gaming plus by MSI, quad case cooling set up, processor cooler is still stock (waiting for noctua deal)) (everything up to date, fresh win10 install, had lol, its launcher and chrome running) thanks in advance and greetings! Chris
  19. - CPU properly installed (checked twice) - heatsink sits perfectly (temps are normal) - memory cleaned (different DIMM slots tried) - dont see the necessity of memtest since its very unlikely that all three of these 8 gb sticks are faulty. The Vengeance ram has worked perfectly in my 6600k system - i cant install Windows with UEFI, since the MB wont recognize / boot into the USB stick with it on. The USB stick is of course formatted in FAT32.
  20. Hey guys, so Im really in desperate need of help over here, getting Ryzen 3600 up and running. Quick recap, so you know where I'm at: - Started off on Wednesday with: out of the box 3000 ready B450 board (MSI B450 Gaming Plus Max) - After initial setup of windows: kept getting BSODs and had programs crashing etc. [MSI Live Update apparently did not pull the latest BIOS version. So I tried to manually update the latter, which I could only get running after complete disassembly and using the Flashback option on my board] - I get back into Windows 10, everything updated etc.: but still random BSODs, programs just shutting down, or not opening up at all. - I've used: chkdsk sfc /scannow DISM commands (the one that gets missing data from online, dont remember it right now but I can look up if necessary) sfc then said there were no issues detected anymore atfer reinstalling League of Legends, I got crashes again and sfc reported faulty data yet again - So I have turned to the hardware side of things: another one of my SSDs is now in use [The SSD has been formatted on my laptop and worked as a boot drive flawlessly before - on my older 6600k system] - I get into WIN10 install utility and proceed to select Win 10 pro. - At like 80% of the 2nd install step, i get a popup basically saying Windows couldnt be installed "Error code: 0x8007025d" - I google that, seems to be an issue with RAM. - I swap out my Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 2133 Mhz, for a backup ddr4 stick I once bought on sale, thinking another machine was broken. [Ballistix sport Gaming Memory 2400 Mhz] So at this point I have: a new board new cpu backup ram in use changed the SSD All I actually migrated is the PSU and GPU (which wasnt the point of the upgrade in the first place.....) I successfully installed win 10 pro and immediately go to windows update, not installing any programs etc. so I hopefully dont get any software conflicts that bring me back to the sfc and dism debacle. Like the 2nd thing being installed (within Windows Update - some cumulative update, i think 1903) freezes at 73%. The PC doesnt really respond anymore. I was able to move the window of Windows Update around, but i couldnt minimize it, right click on homescreen or taskbar etc. So I shut the PC down, check my BIOS settings. Everything set to auto, Speeds and Voltages seem all alright. Temperatures are ok. There seems to be no wrong setting or failing hardware. (I have AHCI and CSM with legacy support enabled. Selecting UEFI wouldnt let me boot into the Win 10 setup on the USB stick in the first place) Windows boots up successfully and gets back to updating and actually finishes one update. Then it said "requires a restart". So I do that since I wanna do everything step by step and just get this damn machine up and running. Now Im stuck in a Shut down -> POST beep (I knew why to activate that -.-) -> Win attempting to repair -> Blackscreen and repeat. Im really at my limits. I never had to check my BIOS this many times, thinking I did sth wrong. I didnt even spend as much time in BIOS or Windows Setup Process overclocking, let alone initially setting up my 6600k. And back then, that was my first PC. Please tell me what to do now, since my troubleshooting just doesnt cut it apparently. Im running in circles. I thought that after a couple of months everything would be at least stable enough to get it running. Its been like 20 hrs tinkering with this machine and despite the great value Ryzen offers, Im about to ditch this whole accumulation of worries and problems and get a fkn mac mini for christs sake. I just wanted more performance for making music (SMT). I was so excited. Deciding between 3600 and 3700x took me months. But by the time I get this load of *** running, I could probably already have recorded a whole album on my laptop about how horrifying ryzen 3000 was to me - at least so far. This is the first time Im just really tilted and out of solution - attempts PC wise, so I apologize for my salty attitude here I hope you guys understand. Y'all are my last resort before i return this machine tomorrow, cuz these 300 bucks definitely didnt make me wanna throw 500 tantrums a day. Greetings, Chris!
  21. my mistake thank you very much for your help. I did some more research audio interface wise and Im just ditching thunderbolt. Im getting an msi b450 gaming plus. Has bios flashback and shld be mostly the same as a tomahawk (which isnt available right now -.-). im saving those 100 (and more) bucks
  22. good to hear that its working fine for you. some people are describing horrible noise. theres a vid on YT of an x570 taichi and that sounds like an overheated, dust filled, crap pc from 2002 lol why did you personally choose x570? if i may ask
  23. example @Herman Mcpootis B450 Gaming Plus (seems to be highly appreciated) VRM: 6 reale Phasen (4+2), PWM-Controller: RT8894A (max. 6 Phasen) MOSFETs CPU 8x 46A 4C029N/4C024N MOSFETs SoC 4x 46A 4C029N/4C024N ASRock X570 Phantom Gaming 4 VRM: 6 reale Phasen (4+2), PWM-Controller: uP9505P (max. 6 Phasen) MOSFETs CPU 8x 55A SM4337/SM4336 MOSFETs SoC 2x 55A SM4337/SM4336 Now, I cant evaluate this. But it seems to only really be different when it comes to the mosfets for the system on chip. what does it mean that its only 2x instead of 4x? it has higher A tho and might be technically different - in lower or higher quality or say.. more sophisticated and hence not needing 4x? idk - thats my problem haha seems like a nice board, I like the design too. However, it doesnt seem to have a TB3 header thats required for the ASRock TB3 card. As far as I know right now thats the only way to get TB3 on AM4 platform. https://www.asrock.com/mb/spec/product.asp?Model=Thunderbolt 3 AIC#Overview http://asrock.pc.cdn.bitgravity.com/Manual/QIG/B450 Steel Legend_multiQIG.pdf
  24. point is tho, that I want proper quality thats say "adequate for its price class" however, before ryzen 3000 I havent noticed too much attention to the topic of mosfets, and VRMs and power stages or whatever (dont really understand all that fully) Since 3000 runs on garbage a320 boards just fine idk... i dont wanna fall into a trap and basically spend 220€ for pcie 4 which i wont use, tb3 which i just might use, wifi 6, bt5 and a fancy design. i can get anything i need with a pcie expansion card - except for TB 3 which'd be useful for higher end audio gear (latency) im not a native speaker so I cant really say if his post was that offensive. but I think we can all be peaceful round here I appreciate both of your guys' time answering me. im tempted to just cr*p on x570 and get a b450 (msi gaming plus) with bios flashback. mostly the fans on them seem to be a problem what is your experience with the fan @quakeguy81?
  25. k. I've already seen a YT video recently of someone being very unhappy with these offerings. However, what I ask myself is this: If these boards have been (power wise esp) improved for 3000 series Ryzen, then how much worse can they be compared to older boards like say a B350 or B450. kinda like "lower tier medium quality = higher tier lower quality" seems tho, that ppl r having major issues with the taichi fan noise and most find the phantom and pro 4 bad. Id skip this generations whole fan debacle asap, if I wasnt interested in that TB3 header. -.-
