VStream (a competitor to Twitch) Announced its notice of closure
Brooksie359 replied to ZexMaxwell's topic in Tech News
From what I understand twitch is largely funded by ads not subs. Obviously some creators typically make more from subs but that is the creator not twitch as a platform the idea that ads don't pay for free content anymore is simply not true. The issue is making sure you actually get the ads to serve but big players in the field seem to be doing fine. Maybe subs could be more than ad revenue if the sub rate was higher but subs also lessen the pool of people to advertise to so its complicated. Anyways I think the idea that ads can't support free content is just silly as it's mostly in the streaming space where it is harder to use ads to support the content and they still manage to make it work on the larger platforms that can get the ads. -
Glassdoor adding real names without consent

I can't say I remembered a ton about glassdoor but I thought it had other uses right? I thought leaving reviews was just one of them. -

I mean I can think of the unity monetization change is probably up there. -
Yeah honestly it sounds like a horribly optimized software. From even just reading a little bit the ram requirements go up significantly each time a 4k screen is added so it isn't surprising it takes 20gb when realistically it shouldn't require that much unless it is doing something crazy with those screens. Like I can't imagine what things the software does that requires all the ram.

I would have to disagree here. For 250 you get 50% more cores which scales incredibly well in rendering tasks. If they are making money doing this then the extra performance could pay for itself. Not saying it would 100% be worth it but it would be something to consider.

2560x1080p is 1080p ultrawide. If you wanted to run normal 1080p you would need to run in a windowed mode and would only cover a portion of the screen.

If I really needed a bigger display I would just hook up the laptop to a monitor. Honestly if you hook up a keyboard and mouse as well then you can usually use a laptop like a desktop. Also keep in mind that there are portable monitors if you are concerned about portability. Also you can use it in conjunction with your laptop screen to run a 2 monitor solution giving way more space.

You're right data mining doesn't have to be a national security threat to be a problem but if that is the case then have regulations against data mining across the board rather than being so selective about it. Clearly they don't care when tons of other people have access to this data with little real oversight in how and if that data is shared with other parties. If they came out with regulations banning data mining and then tiktok got banned for not complying then I would be all for it.

How does Microcenter's pick-up work?

Usually they email you some confirmation in my experience. -
Providing user data and hacking into everyone's devices using some backdoor in tiktok are two very different things. One is concerning while the other I could care less about and not a national security concern that warrants through banning of tiktok. Also I would be surprised if the US didn't collect similar data if not through tech companies directly then by other means.
-
No evidence has really pointed to tiktok being an actual security concern other than conjecture.
-
That's the great thing about freedom of choice. You can choose not to use TikTok and avoid any brain damage. Also I feel like just having legislation against companies collecting a bunch of info from users would have been a better option than a ban because clearly if they cared about security they would be worried about all companies that collect a massive amount of data on users rather than this one company specifically.
-
Sure it is ok when you don't like the website of service but what happens when they do the same for things people like? This is bad and can easily lead to bad outcomes down the line. I can't imagine people would actually support banning companies due to what country they are from. I like having the freedom of choice and it sounds like an overt attack on that in the name of "national security" which I am baffled how tick tok actually represents any real threat.

New build processor help
Brooksie359 replied to cbergerman1515's topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
Comparing the m3 to an intel processor in what way? Also why do you even need to compare them when you are planning on using it for 3d model, video editing and gaming? It would be better to just look at what cpus do well in those tasks or well enough for your needs. -
NVIDIA VS AMD for (mostly competitive) gaming
Brooksie359 replied to phastasmn's topic in Graphics Cards
10s of milliseconds between 60hz and 360hz and the setting on is extremely underwhelming. I would imagine if you used amds version it wouldn't be a big difference and again you are only taking one part of the input lag into account in a large chain of input lag. The difference between 10ms and 20ms is alot more noticeable than say 60ms vs 70ms. -

Brooksie359 replied to phastasmn's topic in Graphics Cards
Maybe I am looking at the wrong benchmarks but the ones I see from nvidia are pretty underwhelming. I mean the difference between it disabled on a 60hz vs enabled on a 360hz monitor is only 10s of milliseconds and I would imagine a large part of that is simply the change from 60hz to 360hz. This isn't even taking into account tick count of the server and your in game ping I would imagine by the end it isn't that significant. -
Apple terminates Epic Games Developer Account (again)
Brooksie359 replied to creat0r's topic in Tech News
That isn't how that works. They will likely always be banned in the US. The court already made a ruling on the matter and the only avenue to overturn it is by doing an appeal and epic already did that and failed. Also stuff outside the US has little to no bearing on precedent.- 56 replies

Keyboard and mouse are incredibly personal decisions. Each have their own feel to them and different people will like different models depending on preferences. Like I enjoy my g502 but I know people who don't like that mouse design but like designs I am not a fan of. Keyboard is the same. Personally I like clicky Keyboards and have razers equivalent of blue switches but I know people who use red switches which I absolutely hate more than membrane Keyboards. Anyways I would look at different mice to see what looks like what you would want and then also decide on what Keyboard switches you want as that will be pretty important when choosing a keyboard.

Apple terminates Epic Games Developer Account (again)
Brooksie359 replied to creat0r's topic in Tech News
I mean Apple was given the go ahead to permaban epic based on the ruling of their lawsuit with epic so not sure the law was on epics side. Also the point is that even if Apple's tos is completely legal that doesn't prevent epic from breaking tos on purpose and having a long drawn out lawsuit over the matter. I probably wouldn't want to work with such a company too even if I knew my tos was technically legal.- 56 replies

Apple terminates Epic Games Developer Account (again)
Brooksie359 replied to creat0r's topic in Tech News
Clearly the judge of the lawsuit didn't agree because they basically said that Apple can ban epic for life based on their bad behavior. Don't get me wrong you can absolutely break tos if it is illegal but typically this is more applicable in defensive scenarios. Basically if you break tos that isn't legal then you are probably OK if the company tries to sue based on the tos violation because it no longer becomes legally binding. Doing the opposite is a completely different situation because in most cases companies can choose to not do business with another company if they don't follow their business agreement. Also epics lawsuit never resulted in a court decision saying that apples tos wasn't legal. It was a new EU regulation that resulted in the change.- 56 replies

Valid strategy or not it does make sense why Apple would be concerned that epic might just not comply with tos again to bait a lawsuit.- 56 replies

Looking for some expertise.
Brooksie359 replied to CDNBC250's topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
Yeah 4 dims on ddr5 is just bad right now. You basically have to sacrifice alot of performance just for the extra memory. Also I doubt 64gb of ram will be an issue anytime soon and like someone else suggested you can always go 2x48 if you really are worried about ram being an issue like 7 years from now.
