  1. Had the same problem. I'm on an Asrock AB350 Pro and every time i tried to go over 4 GHz and 1.4V with the "simple" Overclock, it didn't accept the values, because it doesn't turn off the C-State Management. So the CPU just refused to accept the values and fell back to the "last" valid C-State - which is 1.55 GHz on a Ryzen. Reset everything to standard, install the newest Bios and try again. If that doesn't work, look in to "AMD PBS Settings". Asrock made it overly complicated with the newer Bios Versions...i'll see if i can make some quick screenshots.
  2. First of all, i have to ask: Why are north Americans so afraid of taking blame for oneself and admit that they did something wrong? In Europe, it's common courtesy that if you have your personal info anywhere to be found, it is your fault - Period. Now, lets go further in to reality: If someone threatens you, because someone else focused on you, that's not the fault of the person who brought attention to a situation that you created in the first place! It's also not the responsibility of that person. You screwed up in the first place and it's your responsibility to go to the police, or the governing institution that handles those threats. Jim NEVER threatened PCPer in ANY personal way. He threatened to put the video viewable again, but for one thing, that's something entirely different, because the video is not harmful in any personal way. And for the other, it has nothing to do with the family. PCPer are not "just" words on a page - they have been written by someone, that put his name deliberately on to that page. If you can't handle any backlash, you should not do that, because anyone can come to the same conclusion Jim did. He just put the same thought process in to a Video. In Germany, a Phone Book entry is entirely voluntary for example. Nowhere Jim has said to pull up to the house with pitchforks, post pictures or anything. He is not responsible for the actions of those who threatened PCPer's family. He is also not responsible what his Fan base does, because in his Video Jim never even mentioned anything like that. All he did was say, PCPer was wrong, presented the facts for why and made arguments why this should be handled different. (Edit: I just realized my sentences are sometimes a bit complicated. Sorry for that - i do hope that what i tried to put in to words is understandable)
  3. Personally, i think Adored TV is absolutely in the Right here. I have done Tech Journalism a few years ago and it's one hell of a balancing act sometimes. Not because of the content, but because of what you would like to have as a result. So it's very easy to "tune" the results in various ways. However, this whole thing has been blown out of proportions and yes, Jim did react harsh and very strict in his responses to PCPer. Is that a problem? No. Is it unfair? Maybe. Does this make him a hypocrite? No, not in my opinion, because the underlying theme is different. He called out PCPer based on published Information by them - with Facts against the arguments/results made by PCPer. The Medium is irrelevant, so it could also be an article in a local newspaper - PCPer published that Information knowingly and Jims calling out is just as valid.
  4. Seems like I've lucked out with both the Motherboard and my CPU. My Ryzen 1600 does 4.195 GHz (so - basically 4.2 GHz), i never had any issues with the ASROCK AB350 Pro 4 (except Memory not getting up to more than 2400 MHz before AGESA 0.6) and even cold boot is freaking fast. It's about 5-8 Seconds on my NVMe SSD in to Windows. Although, since the agesa update, sometimes it stays a few seconds at the Bios Splash... Why don't you try another Motherboard, before giving up so easy? Only issues i ever had with Asrock is a bad fan control and wonky sensors under Linux.
  5. Yeah, that "1" shouldn't be there. It's 82 Watts more@stock. Sorry! Yeah, but you can get the R7 1700. There is just one single 8-Core from Intel, that is overclockable. You can get the 1700 to just about the same clocks as the 1800X. If you overclock with P-States, Power Draw most of the time is around 90 Watts. h.264 btw. uses AVX-2. And there they are pretty much on par with the i7-6950x (provided the clock speeds are decent). There is just no comparison for someone, who will be overclocking the chip anyway. Getting the 7820X over the 1700 is just insanely stupid, unless you really, really need that last bit of power for very certain tasks. Also: The 6700K/7700K both run with over 4 GHz on AVX. Not for long, but they do and if you overclock them, they will longer. So, the comparison in itself is kind of flawed. I mean, even SKL-X is an over 4 year old architecture, that has been optimized. If Ryzen hits 4.5 GHz with some optimisations, i'm mildly optimistic, they will get extremely close to coffee lake with Zen 2.
  6. List of them: Text Version of that Review: https://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/cpu_mainboard/intel_core_i7_7820x_skylake_x_review/1 Anandtechs Version: http://www.anandtech.com/show/11550/the-intel-skylakex-review-core-i9-7900x-i7-7820x-and-i7-7800x-tested To be Honest, i'm not really impressed. Anandtech also is pretty biased, compared to the Ryzen Launch, where everything was tested right out of the box, with all of ryzens "flaws" in the beginning. But, Performance wise...nearly 180 Watt more Power Draw, than the R7 1800X and it has not obliterated Ryzen. Also: OC3D's Ryzen results are the ones from the launch of Ryzen, without optimisations. Bit Disappointing.
  7. The rest of the Thread has become so much Intel-Fanboy Bullshit, that i'm going to ignore the majority of it, but i can't let this stand. That is so much Bullcrap, that at first i thought this is sarcasm. But i fear, it is not. I have had SO MANY FRIGGIN problems with Intel and Linux, i can't even begin to write up all the hacks i had to do in nearly 10 years of Desktop-Linux and Intel GPUs. Yes, AMD Cards do have their quirks, but most of the time they are minor and at least they work, so you can do stuff with it. Yes, the Performance of FGLRX was apaling. Yes, it was sometimes a bit tedious to get it working with the newest Kernel release. But at least it worked and wasn't completely broken. Intel has F***** up so much in that regard, that at least for me, this was one of the main reasons to go all AMD. But just some highlights of Intel GPUs with Linux: - Random Xorg Crashes (STILL not solved! This bug exists since 2015 for Christ sake!) - Random Xorg Freezes/lockups (Since mid 2016 and only on Sandy Bridge or newer - still, annoying) - DRI2 incompatibilitys since 2011. - Refresh rate of some DP-Connected F-HD Displays defaults to 30 Hz and can only be switched with heavy xorg.conf tinkering I'm not even going to mention the problems i had with video acceleration. Problems i had with AMD? - Downgrading Xorg - Back in the day with Compiz, Video Acceleration would crash everything when Compiz was running - A bit lower performance. Inconvenient. But nothing major. Performance not being on par with Windows is the same on NV, AMD and Intel. But personally, i don't care. Hitman 2016 runs with 60 FPS on my RX 480. Since i absolutely don't care for pointless *****-measuring contests, i'd rather have a system i can at least use and doesn't lock up every 20-30 Minutes. (And if you are running Openbox, LXDE or something else - a freaking calculator could run that) And i'm not even going to begin with the appalling unfair commercial practices Intel committed over the years. Am i an AMD Fanboy? Maybe. But it could also be VIA, Cyrix or IBM. I actually don't care, as long as it's everything but Intel. Unfortunately i still have to sell Intel Craptastic stuff in my day job. But this will change with Ryzen Pro. And you know what? The average customer doesn't care for peak performance. The average consumer, where the money is made, cares for future proof hardware, that can be upgraded. AM4 is going to be around at least till 2020. There is not one single reason, why the average consumer should buy Intel. And even the advanced user doesn't have a single reason to buy Intel. I have two Virtual Machines running on my Arch Linux Ryzen R5 1600. One is doing some...eh..."Musical Stuff" (if you know, what i mean), the other one is running Lightroom. Both have 2 Cores/4 Threads assigned each. And i can still use Linux to surf the web without any problems. The i3 is dead, the i5 will die and the i7 will be the Dodge Viper (Phase SR and ZB...the VX is basically a Ferrari) nobody except some enthusiast want's to buy. Absolutely, blazingly fast in a straight line. Everywhere else, there are better alternatives, which are still very fast in a straight line - but can go round corners properly. And since i am working in retail for a few years now - the enthusiast platform may be running pretty decent. But H110, B150, B250 are so crappy, i get at least one system per week, that isn't running properly. Not to mention, that TPM, vPro and other "Pro" stuff is missing on every chip, except the Q-Series, where even the A320 from AMD has a TPM.
  8. You do realize, that the leaked stuff about the 7820X suggest they will cost 51% more...and deliver only about 4% more performance? Even overclocked to 4,5 GHz on all Cores, the performance boost will only be about 10%. Also, that thing has a TDP of 140 Watt. If AMD would put a 140 Watt TDP badge on the R7, everyone would go mental.
  9. Uh...except eGPU, i don't know any feature, that USB 3.1 with a C-Connector can't do. In fact, USB-C can do a lot more, than Thunderbolt 3 in itself. And at the moment, it look like the drivers for Intel's HVEC are rather bad. Higher Performance...where? Better Overclocking? Not sure: 700 MHz OC vs. 300/500 MHz isn't that great. If it's worth the extra cost for you: Good for you. Have a cookie.
  10. That is actually something, i'm kind of cross with MB-Manufactures. X299 has ITX Boards from pretty much everyone. Right, because Intel is so much better with naming their products. Apart from that: Kaby Lake U is still the same Chip with significantly lower clocks - considering how much more power efficient ryzen is on the desktop, i personally am pretty stocked, seeing quad cores with a TDP of 15 Watts on mobile.
  11. You've got to explain that one. Right, i totally forgot about that. But who needs Thunderbolt 3 on a Desktop (except Linus...)?
  12. Just out of curiosity: Let's pretend there is no 7700K. Is there any reason, to buy Intel? I mean, not even for gaming, but for everything? And even with the 7700K...with the recent Updates the 7700K and the 1800X are the same in many games (Most notable: RoTR) and many programs have also been updated to use the ZEN Architecture better...so, in all seriousness: Is there ANY reason to buy Intel? Because i actually can only think of one, and that would be AVX-512 if you really need it and maybe the limited availability of mITX Boards for AM4...
  13. https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/gnome-appfolders-manager-git/ But remember, as a rolling release new gnome versions could break this before it will be updated
  14. Right, because Intel has such a good Track record with something like that. That huge Backdoor in the Intels AMT has blown up recently (Nobody can tell me, that this wasn't an intentional Backdoor - or rather Intel engineers being that stupid) - most definitely there are even more. Question is: Would you rather give that Data to the NSA and their partners, with the risk of it blowing up in your face, having a SWAT-Team on your doorstep because of some crappy algorithm - or Russia, who probably can't do much with that Data anyway. Realistically it doesn't matter, because most of the Data is already "out there" and shared between companys, governments and advertising databases. So Russians already have access to that Data. As do the Chinese and North Koreans. I welcome the competition. I hope VIA will come back also and maybe even Qualcomm getting in to X86.
  15. Yes, they do block the upper power outlet if there is one and depending on the shape of your outlets - bit unfortunate, but i personally can live with that. Depends on the Model, the Archer ones have been pretty decent for me, few RMAs, but nothing major. The cheaper ones are absolut crap... Buit apart from that, @kirashis recommendation is even better
  16. I've had TP-Link Routers with some customers. They are pretty decent, but can be a bit tricky to set up right.
  17. Personally, i would recommend you a FritzBox, but i'm not sure if they are available in Canada. About your Wifi: This isn't easy to answer, because it depends on how your house has been built. As for Powerline: I've got the TP-Link 1200 Mbit ones, they are actually pretty decent. As with everything regarding powerline, get one with a "throughplug" (not sure how to call it). I get around 400 Mbit on them. Edit: This one looks decent: https://www.amazon.ca/TP-Link-Wireless-Router-1300Mbps-Beamforming/dp/B00PDLRHFW Also does Beamforming, which can help A LOT. These are the Powerline Adapters i am using: https://www.amazon.ca/TP-Link-TL-PA8030P-KIT-Powerline-Pass-through/dp/B00Y3QPG1A/
  18. Looks like it - friend of mine says it's the opposite for him...Windows 8.1 itself running sluggish. It's funny though, that it's mostly DX9 and 10 Games, that run really bad...
  19. Do you have dual boot on the system? If so: Starting with Windows 8 and in UEFI Mode, Windows will set the Linux Boot to hidden and push itself to the top. I absolutely hate Microsoft for that. You can however use either efibootmgr on Linux or EasyUEFI on Windows to set the desired Boot-Disk. Also, some UEFI-Bios are a bit dumb, they will not accept multiple EFI directorys on a single partition and default back to the Windows EFI file. In this case, you need to make a separate EFI Boot entry with EasyUEFI. It works with efibootmgr also, but is pretty complicated.
  20. No - SHA-2 is the cryptographic hash family or the "preamble", whatever you want to call it. SHA-256, SHA-512 and so on are just the digests and the lenght of the Key. The encryption structure is the same. I didn't have any W8 files on W10. I secure erased the "old" SSD before cloning the W10 install over - would not have made a difference in terms of files. Clean install is done, Steam Library has been checked over and deemed in order by steam. Results are the Same: Windows 10 does not perform as well as Windows 8.1 in DX9/DX10 games. The microstutters of Hitman in DX11 are still there, but a lot less. Performance in DX12 is the same as before (i ran a single Test though...). Elite Dangerous still has 10-15 FPS less than Windows 8.1 FSX runs as crappy as before. No Idea what's going on with that...
  21. It's a RAW, Bit for Bit Clone, with an SHA-2 hash... Not sure where it could have been become corrupted - apart from the FPS not being on par in some Games, it runs really good... Edit: Alright, going to reinstall Windows 10 right now.
  22. Hi, Recently i finally got an NVMe SSD for my AM4 Board. This is probably my first Windows install i maintained pretty good (Probably because i just use it for Gaming and nothing else) and i didn't feel the need to reinstall it, so i just made a RAW Copy of the normal SSD and copied it to the NVMe. I have a small 60 GB SSD with a customized Windows 10 Install (pretty much everything is deactivated), which i transfered to the SSD of the previous W8.1 Install. This was planned to Test DX12, but never came around to do it until recently. It has the latest Updates, except the Creators Update, so it's Version 1607 including all Updates that came for that Version. What i have found is, that FSX, Elite Dangerous and other DX9/10 games run like absolute Crap. I get up to 90 FPS in FSX on Windows 8.1 (i copyed the whole Directory for FSX straight from AppData over to W10), while W10 barely get's 15 FPS. (Yes, i triple checked, VSync is off). DX11 games are somewhat the same, strangely enough though. Except Elite Dangerous - about 15-20 FPS less, than W8.1 Hitman on DX11 runs with some Microstutters on W10, while it doesn't on W8. In DX12 Mode however, it runs extremely good - near 140 FPS peak on 1440p, while DX11 is ~ 80 FPS peak. (64 AVG DX12 and 49 AVG DX11 - W10) Anyone else running dual W8.1 and W10 installs and can check this? Did i deactivate a Service of some kind, that is responsible for letting Games run better? And yes, i tested with both on "Maximum Performance" and both had the same GPU Drivers and i turned off pretty much everything in the background (except RTTS and HWInfo for OSD)
  23. Which is exactly, what i have said in the post you have Quoted.
  24. Apart from about 15 Years experience in IT Retail, a lot of Forum/Reddit Posts about Temps on MSI Boards? No, not really. Thing is: Most Temps reported of Ryzen CPUs on MSI Boards are also higher. I can run my R5 1600 at 4,1 GHz on AIR with a max Temp of ~ 68°C and the VCore is rock solid on my B350 Asrock. There are actually a lot reports of 110-125°C VRM's on MSI B350 boards. Also, the VRM Quality isn't that good - IMHO. MSI is using PK616BA MOSFETs, ASROCK is using SM4337 and ASUS uses 4C09B. Temp ranges for the MSI and ASROCK ones are the same, but the SM4337 delivers cleaner power at higher temps. (less ripple) The 4C09B is certified up to 175°C and is probably one of the Best. Well, maybe i'm over exaggerating a bit. Still, MSI does very good GPUs, but after a lot of MSI Boards had died on me, i've never put an MSI Board in anything again.
