That amount of money would get you a pretty dope rig. This part list should give you an idea of what you could be looking at, in terms of price/performance https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/ZhXpV7

Of course, I would recommend changing/adding different parts to that list to suit your needs.

more cores at less cost helps the performance at least, when you compare a 9700K to a 3700X those extra threads can certainly make up lost grounds, although it depends on what software you're comparing. What specific AVX stuff are you usually doing?
If you can overclock your memory you can of course alleviate this. Of course, $130 isn't necessarily what you'd need to spend for decent memory
    https://pcpartpicker.com/product/RXyqqs/oloy-32-gb-2-x-16-gb-ddr4-3000-memory-md4u163016cgda
The real question is what budget do you plan on allocating to the motherboard? You can run a 3700X on a B450 board but an affordable X570 board might offer much better ram overclock options.

EDIT: also the infinity fabric speed can be overclocked on third gen Ryzen so you can further alleviate the issues caused by slow ram

    TL;DR AT THE BOTTOM

    The Full Story:
Howdy everyone! My name is Andrew, and I have been a computer nerd ever since I was seven years old. I still remember my first PC running Windows 2000, but have no idea what hardware was inside of it, because I got in trouble every time I tried taking something apart.
Fast-forward to December 2008, I’m 11, my parents finally gave us a computer with access to the internet. I discovered something that would change my life forever: A video… of Linus opening up a motherboard box and explaining what it was on YouTube. Being a nerdy kid, I was hooked instantly by the sexy allure that is: Linus computers. I became a regular watcher of LinusTechTips (and other channels), NEVER MISSING A VIDEO ABOUT SOMETHING NEW.
At the age of 12: after discovering that normal people can build computers like expensive Legos, I begged my parents to let me do it. But always getting told it was, “too risky,” or “too expensive,” made me settle on watching Linus do it instead. I did, however, get a nice gig volunteering for my school helping teachers with their computer problems. It let me skip classes and I got to tinker with computers, so to me, it was a win-win. But the urge to build a complete computer system wasn’t satisfied; that is, until my senior year.
At my high school, during senior year, you are required to do a project that involves 40 hours of work - research counted if your topic was complex enough. So naturally, I took the opportunity to fulfill my dream of building a computer. To pay for it, I set up an agreement with my parents where I only paid for half of the project in cash and worked off the other half that they paid for.
I was ready. I used all the information Linus had taught me over the years: compatibility shopping, deal hunting, tech dropping, cable management, screwdriver control, EVERYTHING my mind could bring forth. The project came to a close with me building a system with an FX-6300, Radeon R7 260X, 8GB of RAM, and a 1TB HDD. It cost a total of $600, and I got an A+ from the teachers.
I loved that computer, and used it as much as I could. BUT ALAS, I had to sell it in order to pay to move into a new house - as my parents started going through a divorce in 2016. I began helping support my mom since then - working at McDonald’s, living mostly paycheck to paycheck - which left little money aside for technology and fun. UNTIL LAST YEAR…
In March of last year (2019), a customer in McDonald’s had a laptop giving him trouble, so during my break I decided to help him out. It only took a couple minutes to get it working - he was having trouble with our WiFi - so we started chatting. He gave me his card, and told me to call him if “I thought about leaving McDonald’s.” Turns out, he’s the owner of a small counseling office.
Of course, as soon as my shift was up, I called. He said he was in need of someone to help with their computers, printers, and other "tech stuff." He offered me the same per month as my current job (something I didn’t even tell him yet) with half the hours and a fraction of the stress. I put in my two-week notice as soon as that call was over.
A few months went by, and I got a cheap laptop and spent my free-time running a side gig making websites and offering IT services to other people. Life was turning around for the better. Then, when Christmas came around, I realized I had enough saved to build a computer and not be strapped for cash. ”I COULD FINALLY HAVE A REAL COMPUTER AGAIN,” was the first thing that ran through my head, and I nearly cried. I excitedly told my mom, and began putting together parts lists and searching YouTube videos for product reviews. LinusTechTips being first, of course.
After ordering my first part, the new Noctua NH-DH15 chromax.black edition, I actually cried when I saw the LTT logo on the box. I couldn’t believe I had gotten one of the limited edition coolers…

Then BOOM, inspiration struck. I began modifying my parts list to fit a Black, White, and Orange color scheme. I decided to make this computer in honor of the man who was basically an “internet father” to me, teaching me all the things I ever wanted to learn.
So, without further adieu, here are the specs and pictures of my boss, my best friend, and I assembling what I call…
    The LTT Shill Build

    BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE!
After the PC was complete, my gut was telling me that she wasn’t done yet. Her final form had yet to be reached, but I was uncertain as to why… She was GLORIOUS, in all of her LTT wonder. BUT THEN... The PC Gods shined upon me. A, “ping,” from my phone. “The Facebook Marketplace? What do they wa-” was as far as my thought got until I saw it: The PERFECT deal. A GTX 1070, in the EXACT same theme as the motherboard, for only $170. You best believe I hopped on that deal as fast as my fingers would let me.

After the "new" graphics card was installed, I took a look at my background image and decided “I can do better than that.” SO I DID. I took a high-resolution image of the LTT logo, and made it fit the color scheme of mostly black, with white as the secondary color, and orange as the tertiary color. So here she is everyone:
The LTT Shill Build, Mach II

TL;DR: I was always a computer nerd and LTT fan. Built a computer I was proud of at a young age, later went through some hard times, had to sell the computer, and now I have finally made it back to the PCMR with an LTT Themed PC that I have already upgraded once.

F for the smallest noctua there is. But this was well worth it!

I use this old AMD HD6450 as a terminal output and boot device for my Unraid, but the rest of the system is 100% on a full big loop (with noctua fans) and therefore very silent.
This cards fan has a damaged bearing and was running 100% all the time due to no proper fan control being available and other problems with linux (wich unsaid is based on).
SO yeha spend 10$ for a used NF-A4, cut it up and glued it in to place. Used Noctua OmniJoin and a low noise adapter -> cant hear it and the GPU stays cool!

Guiltyxz reacted to JZStudios in GOG.com pulls a massive pro-consumer move with updated refund policy
I went into my email and was surprised with this, almost deleted it thinking it was just another GOG security update or something. Turns out it's a massive pro move from the little team that could.

"Everyone at GOG believes in a 'gamers-first’ approach. It means that every part of our store is designed with gamers in mind and your purchase safety and satisfaction come first for us. The latest update to our voluntary Refund Policy adds another piece to this customer-friendly experience. And it all sums up in one sentence: starting now, you can get a full refund up to 30 days after purchasing a product, even if you downloaded, launched, and played it. That's it.

It’s important for us to say that this update is possible thanks to your respect for all the time and hard work put into creating the games you buy on GOG.com and playing by the rules. We're grateful for that and encourage you to continue to do so.

For more details on how the change works, please check this FAQ article."

    FAQ link HERE
This is major news and something I was hoping Steam would do for years, taking less risk out of buying PC games and being potentially screwed out of $60 for sub standard games, or hell just games that you just don't like. This really flies in the face of people claiming that this is impossible, or would be unfair, or that you don't own your digital purchases.

As if this wasn't big enough news (That doesn't even seem to be advertised on their main site, they just went "Oh yeah, we did this super rad thing.") GOG Galaxy 2.0 is apparently now in Open Beta.
    Link HERE
I've been using it for a few months now, and I'm pretty damn happy with it, being able to consolidate all my games, including emulators into one place and being able to launch them all from one place, as well as allowing it to close the other launchers on game exit. It'll even pull in achievement information, friends lists, play time, and more from other platforms, all while having a clean and fairly customizeable layout.

    Edit* A lot of people seem to think that GOG hasn't thought about the fact that people are scumbags, despite the fact that their entire store is DRM free and if people didn't want to buy games they could just pirate them. Anyways, here's what's written in their FAQ;
    1. How does your updated voluntary Refund Policy work?
The updated policy lets you refund a product up to 30 days after purchase, even if it was downloaded, launched, and played. Yes, you read that correctly.
To apply for a refund, you should contact our Customer Support Team within 30 days of your purchase, and our team will sort it out as soon as possible.
We're monitoring the effects of the current update to make sure no one is using this policy to hurt the developers that put their time and heart into making great games. We may refuse refunds in such individual cases. We'd also let you know about any future adjustments in the voluntary Refund Policy in advance. 7. How often can I refund my games? Is there some sort of limit?
We trust that you're making informed purchasing decisions and will use this updated voluntary Refund Policy only if something doesn't work as you expected.
This is why there are no limits but instead, we reserve the right to refuse refunds in individual cases.
Please respect all the time and hard work put into making the games you play and remember that refunds are not reviews. If you finished the game and didn't like it, please consider sharing your opinion instead. Also, please don't take advantage of our trust by asking for an unreasonable amount of games to be refunded. Don't be that person. No one likes that person. I also highly doubt this will damage GOGs standing with publishers. Steam still has big games come out on it's platform despite their refund also being the end of the world. Big games are already not on GOG because they're DRM free and big publishers think that DRM is good for sales, despite being cracked mere hours after launch every time.
