    (finished prior sorry)
Hi guys.  The purpose of this project is to build a fully fledged gaming rig, in a 13 year old case which you could probably find at your local junkyard. The computer must be a champ in three categories; Power, Cooling and Silence. All thise while looking completely stock on the exterior.  I started this project a few months ago, but am still awaiting a few parts. All picture have been taken with a non-smart phone sorry.   Specs: 4770K With 360 Loop MSi GTX 770 oc in SLi (+Backplate) Gigabyte Z87MX-UD3H PNY 4x4GB 1600 Kingston v300 120GB SSD (windows, high priority games) Seagate Barracuda 2TB (Steam games, a lot) FSP Aurum 750M GOLD     First off, Heres the beauty. Ah, that windows ME sticker means business folks.   How did such an old case stay so clean?   This was used to line the interior panels of the sides, top and front. Even the drive bay covers.   Thanks to MNPC tech, I could stencil early!   Ready to cut!   Some early parts!   Just some little tweaks...   The cut is made....and the case is Powder Coated!!   These are some neat doodads  And this will be a challenge..   I love velcro dots <3 (for filter, ssd, and panel)   This Pantyhose dust filter for the bottom of the case is a little ghetto   More parts!! Cable extensions are silverstone btw! They look like shoe laces. I didnt even have to mod for this hole!   More of these haha Exciting.... Turned this reservoir into absolute ghetto Things are falling into place The front panel cables have been heatshrinked too.   Neato fan controller to be chopped up!   Ghetto, but temporary!   Far out its sexy!   First card and ram arrived!   A bonus swag sticker to go with my celeron D!   Now for a start at putting her together!   And the final shoot!

This thread will be undergoing a large overhaul quite soon so please stay tuned, all pics will be removed and update and a lot of things will be totally re written. Second gpu is in shipping and is expected to be here either today april the 8th or tomorrow wednesday the 9th with a very slight possibility of thursday the 10th but thats unlikely. regardless of when it shows up i will not be able to do any updates or benching until later thursday night or early friday as i will be working and whatnot until that time. Thanks to everyone who has fallowed the build and help support me during the the death of the 770s that were originally going into the build. Everything is on track and going well now.

Hey everyone so i know i have a build log for the tower but i wanted to do a full setup tour because well.. i get a lot of questions about how i afford this working a minimum wage job and if i live in a cardboard box so here it is.. the full setup tour enjoyy

The tower specs so far and what to come

I7 4770k @ 4.8ghz cooled by a swiftech h320 (review) in push pull with a mix of fans noctua nf-f12's strapped on to that sommmbichhh
    16gb Patriot Viper 3 Black mamba edition @ 1600mhz latency's of 9-9-9-24
    Gigabyte z87x-ud5h Motherboard
2x Geforce GTX 780 Lightning edition sli (incomplete review is here just need to update with numbers)
Soundblaster zx to power the 5.1 surround system as well as to run my occasional console gaming through my surround have yet to kill the led on it though i hate that red led in there then gonna recolor the shroud
Samsung Evo 120gb ssd boot drive
2tb Seagate barracuda mass storage drive
    Corsair rm850 watt psu
    Corsair Air 540 cube case

ok so thats the tower, and here are the pics of said tower

It definitly has a good home no cardboard boxes here haha. Just awaiting a few things in shipping as stated above, second gpu, more fans, custom sleeved cables to help clean that up and a blu ray drive cause i watch a lot of movies on my system since it is in my room. later on ill have the whole system watercooled but thats a few months away probably having trouble finding the waterblock i need, found the exact card i have pre installed with the evga hydrocopper block just trying to find one separate is a pain

Now for the rest of the setup, its nothing to special really in my opinion but whatever lol

Asus 27 inch 1080p monitor (gotta find model number cant remember off hand)
43 inch samsung plasma for said movies
Logitech G710+ mech keyboard with browns
Logitech g13 (rarely use it anymore just love the lcd for all my temps and stuff, keeps my gaming cleaner )
    Razer naga
Edifier S550 surround system (was actually a birthday present)

so thats the basic run down of my setup now for a few pics

Ok so there are two different monitors there, reason for this is the the two outside monitors were purchased much much later then the center asus monitor, they all have a 2ms gtg and are all ips panel so they all look near identicle once the color settings are done just right. even the bezels are millimeters within each other so i couldnt really complain since they were also on sale for $100 off each saving me $200. as for the tv in behind, i have a wall mount on order and it will go directly above where it sits now, keeping it for my movies and netflix and stuff of that sort

The tv is a little sketch right now but its sitting there solid after a worst case scenario test and is only staying there over night, its getting wall mounted soon, the wall mount is in but with my pops outta country i cant really wall mount a 43 inch plasma myself

So theres the edifier control pod, the control pod for my soundcard which makes headset usage wayy nicer and my watch, keep it there when im gaming cause i dont wanna scratch it.
Couple other little random things there, Logitech g13 gameboard, dont use it all that much anymore unless im playing anno 2070 mostly used to keep msi afterburner info handy. Other then that its just change and packing slips and whatnot

what we first start off with is making some guideline holes so that we are able to do better cuts with the jigsaw allowing us to change angles easily.

    Mid way cutting.

now time to lay it on, and all is good.

a wild cat appears! "hmmmm, can i fit through here?"

"Why yes! of course I can!"

marking out the other side, and repeating the process

both sides have been completed and look very nice. they are BOTH yet to be routered so that the grill sits in flush. but that is next days off job.

I quickly decided that I would do my 5.25" holes, one for a Blu Ray drive (basically just incase i need it for whatever case. And no, I couldn't be bothered getting a USB one), and also will be fitted with a Fan Controller too.
    Here is the plan...

    Holes done

    all cut out

with a bit of extra little rasping (wood equivalent of a file) they fit nice and snug! Though like the rad grills. Will router a recess for them to sit flush in. If some may notice, the drives are sitting lower then centre, this is because I will probably put my power/reset buttons above the 5.25" area.
and ps, yes I know the middle piece between each 5.25" slot is weak as hell, and I understand that. If it breaks it breaks, if it doesn't it doesn't! it looks nicer with it though

Oh, and this is the glass installed
easy to remove to, simply put fingers between the two glass sheets and lift the top one up! the front bit is siliconed in place

Next update will be Wednesday of everything routered
and then theres only two holes left to do (PSU, I/O shield) and its time to d-d-d-d-d-drop the hardware in!!

Here is how I will be spacing my UP7 to the desk itself. just a few rubber spacers, that will be screwed into the desk, will have to go find some nice long thin srews while I think about it!

We start with the routering of the 480 grill rebate, so that the grill can sit nice and flush

The middle bits had to be done also, and were very difficult too as after a few cm's the router wasn't sitting flush anymore so would 'dip' as you can see in the picture where it dipped a little bit. but that's okay! it's not seen

Thinking about how I could find a packer to use that allowed an extra bit of width... duh, why not use the template to rest the router on!

Now, this is what it looked like! the rebate for the grill was done, and also i further rebated in a rectangle for the actual little hex-hole grills to sit in too

Then there was about a 2 week period where I did nothing in life but work/sleep. UNTIL my parts arrived! and I will also be getting another GTX 680 4GB too

After thinking and googling, I figured a way that I could mount my power supply tidily, by making a metal template I guess you'd call it. where you would screw the thin sheet steel to the desk so you could then be able to screw the psu in!

And then there she was. the template to cut out the... template :B

Mid way cutting it out, realised I shouldn't have cut the paper up so much as it was so hard to get the small rectangle square again!

And there it is. Not the tidiest and 100% most beautiful, but it will be painted, not seen. It will serve the purpose it was made to do _b

Time to mark out where the IO shield will be put, and also where my PSU hole will be too.

Time to do my preliminary guide holes for the jigsaw

And there it is, all nice and square!

The PSU Template works well too

Now, the one thing that bugged me the most... The PCI holes. How do do them? Do I rebate them? Do I cut out one big hole instead? I will do it individually instead and rebate me thinks..

I then proceeded to use the smallest router bit I had and rebate the groove for the PCI brackets to sit in.
Also, the top L piece of the bracket needed somewhere to sit in, so I marked the lowest point the bracket could sit, otherwise the card when in the motherboard will be on a lean and could have a dodgy connection to the PCI/E Lane

Making sure my depth was correct, I used a test bit of wood to make sure that when it came to the final piece, it was done properly.

    A Perfect fit!

Just a FYI, to prevent any scratching this is how I lay the top down to do any cutting/routering etc

Now that the first PCI slots had been cut, it was time to finish the rest off

Here is how I measured the spacings for where the slots went, just an old case I chopped up!

    All cuts done

Next, to square all the holes out I figured, what better way to do that, than with a Router! Least that's what I thought. The insertion of the bit went well, as soon as I itched it to the right BOOM. the middle piece of the PCI slots just snapped off.. I said a naughty word beginning with F. the next one began with C. hehe

It was time to resort to Plan B. Cut the whole damn thing out and chop the PCI bracket bit out of that old case that was in the pic above

it looks a lot tidier this way anyway, so while I am not happy the slot snapped out, I am happy with the result I guess!

So after cutting the PCI Bracket out, i gave it a quick sand and a quick paint with orange and will continue to polish it up over the next week but just wanted to test it out for the time being to make sure all was well... Guess I was just impatient and wanted to see if when everything was laid out in the desk it would all look pretty is more appropriate

Tomorrow should finally be ready to paint.

    7th Day

Yesterday was a day of sanding, painting and cleaning.

    That ended plastic putty sanding

Then I had to apply red putty to refine the details:

    After painting and cleaning

    8th Day

Today with all painted finally start putting together:

Applying foam weatherstripping to the plastic holders to not scratch the reservoir: ;)

He also had to paint the DVD reader .. : D

For good measure a preview of how it goes with everything mounted leaving without wires:

Surprise of the day .. want to place the SATA power cable to the ssd I find that the font is backwards! probe with molex to sata adapter but does not go straight:

    9th and last Day

Today at the end I could finish assembling everything without complications ... yeah! :D

First the correction veneer ssd service to come good cables:

While the paint was drying take advantage to drain the circuit ;)

This morning I finally began to build and was able to finish the HAF-X Mod V1.0

I had to get it out so that the photos can be more clearly

Well that's all for now, hope you liked. Greetings!

    aesthetic mini update:

If I get time before the end of this mod contest, I'll put transparent tubing to appreciate better the blood red liquid, change compressor, black 230mm fan and why not a dedicated rad for the vga card ;)
Also will update ssd and 480 SLI.
