  1. Summary Apple has announced that they will release diagnostic software for DIY repairs to help identify issues and test parts for the public. According to their claims, the software contains the same features and capabilities AASP and Apple's independent repair program uses. Moreover, they are expanding the SRP to newer devices like the iPhone 15 series and M2 Macs as well. The program has also been released officially in 35 countries. My thoughts Nice to see that Apple is slowly releasing parts and software for independent shops and DIY users. One of the main pain points was the lack of a diagnostic tool and hopefully, this is the beginning where that starts to change. 2. Hi @LinusTech For context: This was for an undercover video
  3. Where's the LTT content? I have been waiting for my LTT fix all week, ugh But in all seriousness, can they return to the regular old content willy-nilly? I think they might be working on a follow-up video with all the updates, process changes, revised upload schedule, etc decided over the last week before going back
  4. I use it. I have been using the desktop Outlook as a release and my only gripe with it is that it's slow and does not have linked inboxes like the old previous mail app. Also, side note - why is everyone just assuming that no one uses the desktop mail client? It is so much more convenient than visiting the website all the time especially considering desktop notifications. To people, including Luke from one WAN show long back who thinks no one should use it - I know its old school to keep using web browsers, but move on with the times guys
  5. By "ignoring the madison incident", I meant leaving out the Madison incident for the argument I did not actually mean that they ignored the Madison incident
  6. Ignoring the Madison incident - which came out after the video was made - were the other things really that serious and grave for one to be absolutely dead serious? I mean it's not like they were apologizing for murdering someone. There wasn't any party that was physically hurt. It was mostly their incompetence, and they were just staying on brand and trying to lighten the mood with the lttstore, screwdriver and sponsor segment. I do not think it took anything away from the apology video, especially when all the senior management came in apologized and highlighted steps to rectify all of it. I don't think you can realistically enforce not discussing wages. Basically, all that clause disallows you to do is go to senior management and say "I want a raise because he/she gets this much" - which you can't really do in any private for-profit company tbh. If employees were getting poor wages, wouldn't we have seen a huge turnover rate at LMG? We don't and we constantly see so many faces sticking with LMG for non-insignificant amount of time
  7. I still don't get what people are mad about anymore, even after the apology video. Seriously, are you guys furious about the video being monetized, LTTStore plug, screwdriver ....and reading from the TELEPROMPTER ?!?! The inaccuracies in the recent videos, while disappointing, was not the end of the world, to deserve the backlash it did receive. GN was right covering it and people should have been mad, but the mob was a lil out of control, judging by numerous posts and even reddit threads. The two actual major issues were the Billet Labs incident and Madison's account. To me, as a follower of LMG and Linus for more than 10 years, and as the person who worked in a company with too many communication issues faced during scale-up, it was very obvious to me that it was not malice and was just some extraordinary communication breakdown. But judging by some comments, they basically accused Linus to be a thief who stole intellectual property for profit, or at least so you would think based on GN and some of the comments from the community. He had all the right in the world to be a little bit salty and disappointed. Heck, I would. Do not attribute malice to what could easily be explained as incompetence. Madison was another one, but we only know one side of the story, so there is a possibility that it could be a disgruntled employee exaggerating claims. However, LMG has obviously, and rightly, decided to investigate the claims with a third party. This is absolutely the correct way of proceeding ahead and people should really shut up about it until we get the findings. The above two issues are purely caused due to massive scale-up in employees in such a short time. You cannot run a large corporation like a startup. And this point I'm sure Linus wasn't aware of 90% of the stuff that happens like the communication breakdown about the Billet labs prototype, or sexual harassment caused by one or a few of the 90-100+ employees. It is bound to happen, and there is no way around it. Linus just learned the hard way why large companies have a dedicated HR team, PR team, etc. And it should also be a lesson to everyone in the community as well when you guys later inevitably complain about PR-like statements from LMG henceforth. And the teleprompter and jokes thing. This is the most ridiculous one. The video was made before Madison's allegations and until then the issues LMG were accused of were not extraordinarily scandalous or earth-shattering. So the community's reaction and distaste towards jokes are very confusing to me because you all make it seem like LMG was intentionally involved in some major scandal. When it comes to the teleprompter, anyone with any experience speaking in front of the camera will assure you, that you definitely need a teleprompter, especially for a video like this. You cannot speak on such a contentious topic without carefully choosing words and given the lack of on-camera experience for many of the people in the video, it is needed for the faster production of the video. It's 99% likely that they themselves wrote their bit with and actually carried full meaning behind their words. Again the community backlash is extremely insensitive and downright naive. Makes me really think that all those people are a bunch of 12-year-olds with zero life experience wanting to do something 'cool' like joining a hate mob. Anyways, I think we all should just go back to our lives and only comment on LMG and these topics further if any new information comes out. Apart from that, I think Linus and LMG has addressed all the concerns in some shape or form and some of you guys seriously need to put down your pitchforks and do something better
  8. I have the same opinion as you as well. I was really annoyed about the bit where Madison claimed Linus asked her to change her priorities when her brother passed away. I was pretty annoyed at how someone could be so heartless. But then I remembered my CEO from an ex-startup I worked in. He used to be such a good person I saw him devolve into a heartless monster, especially when it came to lower employees. I think our system of capitalism just forces one to become like that in order to keep up. So I have my sympathy for Linus. I do not know the solution. But it is a good learning exercise. If I were to ever start my own company, I will keep all these things in mind And for Terren, I feel so sorry for him. I'm sure he must've had a thought about what cursed moment he decided to accept the job
  9. It wasn't a big deal because Linus claimed that there was already an undergoing conversation about compensating them for their loss. But, that seems to have been a bold-faced lie, because Billet labs said that they only received communication from LMG after the GN story came out. That is not what he said in his reply initially. Had he said the fact that he was unaware about it and he was immediately going to rectify it, no one would be mad. But he LIED. That is the problem. He skewed the situation to make it look less negative for him. You cannot trust a person like that anymore. The fact that LMG as whole has been quiet and hasn't released a scheduled video itself speaks volumes about what is going on internally.
  10. When the video broke out from GN, I initially defended LMG and Linus. Mistakes happen. Its alright and Linus did say (although saltly) that they were going to fix things and implied that the billet labs incident was already being taken care of. But, after reading billet labs' response that they only got intimation about all these things after GN broke out with the piece, and if what Madison wrote here is true, there is really no justification for Linus or LMG as a company. I cannot stand by them anymore and this has honestly become heartbreaking and its made me mad. If everything Madison has said is true (which we will need other employees to testify) then for the sake of my morales I cannot support LMG and Linus in any capacity anymore
  11. So isn't that the video that Linus was never supposed to see? Has the same feedback been given internally through proper channels? Was there a discussion and conclusions formed? If so what was it? We don't know any of this. At least I don't. See, there have been times where I bitch about my boss, but I wouldn't necessarily tell it to his face (later I did because I had to but there are many employees who don't) Also LTT publishing videos every day is their identity. They haven't increased nor decreased their output in the main channel for the past 10 years. The solution for this I have is slowdown releases on other channels and make more eyes look at an LTT project than ever before, which I suspect is already happening/going to happen moving forward
  12. Its a mistake. He admitted it. It was probably one among the tens and thousands of products they have handled. And it involved multiple humans (who are far from perfect creatures). It happens from time to time. Do you have any idea how many major fuckups happen in huge corporations? Its quite frankly absurd, but it happens all the time and everywhere. It's just part of being a big company, unfortunately. His claim was that even if it performed really well on 3090 or 3080 or whatever it was designed for, his conclusion would still remain the same. But yes, that is a mistake because Linus should have shown it on what it was designed for and give the ability to people to form their own conclusion. That is something he completely missed and he admitted to it as much in his response when he talked with Adam
  13. Alright, could you show some examples where Linus ignored critical feedback? If what you claim in indeed true and Linus was definitely trying to brush away constructive criticism, then yes I will support you. But you should also demonstrate intention, because a lot of the clips from WAN show are people misinterpreting his point of view (is his pov right? not necessarily, but I can see from where he comes)
  14. It would've changed a lot. For one, anyone watching GN video will naturally think Linus maliciously sold the cooler for a profit at an auction ignoring their request to return it. That is not what happened. It was a gross miscommunication error and LMG has already committed to compensating them for whatever they deem the value of the cooler. That is the reality and that should have been mentioned. Second, Linus approached the cooler review in a different way. Purely as an item on whether people should buy or not, rather than a technical showcase. He has admitted to that mistake as well. It is a journalistic practice to reach out for comment before completely attempting to destroy someone's credibility. GN talks about framework investment potential conflicts of interest when there is literally no proof or evidence of the same. What GN did was build up drama. They should have approached Linus for comment and then published the video - with the most up-to-date info. All I can help feeling is that he did not approach Linus because he wanted his video to carry pain as much as it did. And that is just sad.
  15. I am pretty sure Billet Labs wasn't communicating with Linus directly I am pretty sure there is a chain of people in Logistics handling such stuff and they may have forgotten to inform the concerned writer when they deal with probably hundreds of emails a week around the same stuff. I am pretty sure Linus probably wasn't involved in the auction stuff. It was one mistake in probably tens of thousands of product samples they got and returned. It happens. Its human. Yes, obviously this would not happen in a company of 5-10 people. But LMG is not. Between Logistics, writers, upper management, auction and event team - they're already over 50
  16. Right, I am coming from reddit and youtube. I posted my same comment here because I assumed the 85 page forum was also complaining about the same, rather than his response. I had written on my original post about the same as well. But I don't know. You can't help it but become a little salty after becoming directly attacked by your friend out of the blue, with no warning or a chance of recourse whatsoever
  17. If you bothered to read my entire post, I do mention my fair share of criticisms as well. I also mentioned how his thinking as seeped into all of this. Please read it again. But on his LTT forum post, I don't think it's childish. He has admitted to the factual mistakes, he has claimed he is going to compensate billet labs for their loss and he is right that Gamers nexus should have reached out to him before publishing his piece You are talking as if they did it intentionally. They very well did not, unless you have proof. It was a long chain of communication breakdown (which is not really uncommon).
  18. Edit: My response is coming after reading a lot of subreddits and youtube comments. I have not gone over the 85 page long LTT forum, but I am assuming the general response here is also a negative but slightly toned-down version. Anyway I decided to repost the below comment from Reddit because I feel the criticism has been blown out of proportion EDIT: Things have unfortunately turned worse and I cannot in good conscience support Linus and LMG anymore after Billet released their statement & and after Madison wrote her thread and experiences working at LMG (if true). I will leave my original post below, but my stance has changed completely. While probably not malice, Linus got consumed in the capitalistic and inhumane system that he so often likes to diss about other large companies EDIT 2: The apology video is out. And honestly, they are taking steps to rectify the mistakes in videos and Billet labs was just a series of unfortunate incidents (which I emphasise does happen, especially in large companies). I think everyone should just calm the fuck down and move on. The LTT store plug and screwdriver were just light-hearted jokes and people going mad over those, for an issue that is far far from life-altering, should really just go outside and touch grass. The only thing that remains is the Madison issues. At this point in time, it's just hearsay and we don't know the actual story unless someone else corroborates the same. And till then I will treat it as such. == Orgiinal post == It's so fucking sad to see how the community has completely turned on Linus over THIS, of all things Yes, they made some mistakes. Billet Labs was in particular horrifying. But it was so obvious that there was some miscommunication and it wasn't malicious. And Linus has claimed that they were and are taking care of it. That should've been the end. It happened, actions were taken to resolve it, now fucking move on. Do you know what my problem with this community reaction is? Linus has been very transparent about sponsorships and the offers he got to acquire the company and numerous other things. And that VERY TRANSPARENCY is what is biting him in the back. Look at how many comments here talk about the 100 million dollars in a mocking way (all over Reddit and youtube). Had he not shared, YOU GUYS WOULDN'T HAVE SUCH STRONG AMMUNITION TO hit back at him. And it's not like he has 100 million dollars. It was turned down. It was potential and nothing more. Just because someone is worth so much on paper due to Equity does not actually mean they have that much money to spend. This is exactly the sort of 5-year-old thinking you expect from the internet and it's sad that a generally more informed tech community has fallen prey to this. About the release schedules. LTT forté has always been to release a video daily. Changing that release schedule is basically changing your entire identity. There's a reason why large companies stick to the trends they've set. Brand identity is an important aspect despite how objectively stupid it is. We as humans are stupid but we like patterns. We just love 'em. Changing the course now would hamper LTT. Maybe not much, but enough. So my suggestion here is that rather than focus on making more channels, maybe set more eyes and more people on one LTT project. It's not easy and it will require a lot of extensive processes and documentation, but it's the only way to avoid human error-like mistakes as seen a lot. Linus made mistakes. Not intentional of course for the most part. For the cooler one, he has admitted that he approached it in the wrong way (basically evaluating it as a product to buy/avoid, rather than the tech showcase). Now I do have my fair share of issues with Linus and his ways of thinking, don't get me wrong. Sometimes he speaks tone-deaf about huge corporations like Apple when he himself goes through the same thing as LMG. There are so many times where merch prices have been discussed and he has admitted to extreme complexities around it but completely shuns away the 1000x more complex devices phone design because Apple has multi-billion dollars in its bank. That kind of a slight difference between my thing and your thing is a fair criticism of Linus's character and it has seeped into all this a little bit as well. But the rest of the things he said are fair. He admitted to the mistakes, he has always said the lab is just growing and most of the testing is not final. Gamers Nexus should've approached Linus before publishing the video (that's just basic respect man). All in all, this has been extremely sad and I'm sure Linus and his team did not have a great day today. Especially and probably after reading through the extremely toxic community backlash. If I was in his place, I'm sure part of my mind would be like fuck this ungrateful community, I have enough money to retire and rather spend it time with my family than work hard for pretty much only toxic criticisms and ungratefulness. And at that point, we all lose. @LinusTech I'm sorry you're going through this. I hope you can weed out the unnecessary toxicity from the community and creator alike and just take the small sliver of constructive feedback to work on. I hope you don't lose many sleep over this.
  19. I understand the use cases in stadiums and all where bandwidth to serve a large crowd is required. But why would it be helpful in a typical home? Who needs that much bandwidth? Maybe for some future tech like wireless VR, but as per current trends, is it really required? Also, does this mean the lights need to be constantly turned on? Does the LiFi network still work from reflected surfaces without significantly compromising the supposed advantages of much higher bandwidth? I can see this work where the handover between WiFi and LiFi should be near perfect for people to ever consider this tech.
  20. Well, and practically overnight, gaming on a mac is suddenly a thing. On a more serious note, I'd like to see the performance of the M series mac compared to a dedicated GPU. I don't actually think it will be that great, but it should sort of make apple focus on the GPU aspect of their chips for future iterations
  21. I think the M series and the A series are already capable of processing sensor data. It's just that R1 may be specialized hardware to do the same like a 10x faster - required to get those latencies small enough to prevent motion sickness. It could make sense if iPhones, iPads and Macs suddenly for whatever reason need real-time sensor fusion to happen within milliseconds, but I can't really think of any use case. But if Apple is working on Apple Car, the R1 could be the foundation for a legitimate environmental perception chip with maybe an M chip on steroids (C series?) acting as the brains
  22. I don't think the R1 features would benefit iPhones or iPads as of now. From what I can understand (this is pure speculation), R1 is dedicated to real-time sensor fusion from all the array of sensors. It doesn't really make sense to integrate it into the M series of chips for now
  23. Apple's Vision headset looks pretty sick tbh But before that, a lot of people are going to complain about price and battery life. So i want to address that first Price: Apple's headset seems to be built really well with really premium materials and technology. The sensor array, the two eye 4k+ microLED screens (microLED just made its debut!), a suite of sensors including multiple cameras, Lidar, IR and OpticID, a cover OLED screen and spatial audio features, along with M2 and R1 chips. All the micro innovations needed to bring all this together, in a relatively compact and beautiful package is no small feat. And all these things costs money. The amount of R&D and engineering that went into it is something we as public will never really grasp, but there are already a few engineers on twitter talking about it. This is a first gen tech with all cutting edge processing and sensors. Give the tech some time and prices will water down significantly. I can imagine the 3rd or the 4th gen Vision Pro to be 1500-1700 USD and non Pro to be 800-1000 usd Battery: It's just frankly a plan technological limitation. Same way why we can't get 2000 Km+ EVs currently now. It will get better with generations My thoughts: Honestly i had zero expectations but Apple never fails to impress. The people who have seemed to tried it have been really surprised by how good of a first gen product it is. Here are a few links posts i found https://twitter.com/neilcybart/status/1665827244114345984?t=aIkOGP8Rd4Zsz6f_QTtbvA&s=19 Oh and for people wondering about FOV, there's basically apparently none
  24. There are literally like only 3 of them Fab business would not make sense for any company that only works on cutting-edge nodes. TSMC, Samsung, and Global Foundries still continue to pay off their R&D investments for a particular node well after the initial 1-2 years it's released. While companies like Nvidia (and Apple too) only want the latest node and they would use it for about a year, max maybe two years, before moving on to the next node. Were they to make a fab, then they will either need to continue using the now older node tech for some other products, or they will need to sell it to someone else, which is quite honestly a mess, especially when this isn't their area of focus. Rather, not sure about Nvidia, but Apple does invest into TSMC a few billion dollars every now and then to help them research newer processing nodes
  25. You do realize VR/AR at the end of the day is just a powerful processor with a screen attached that you wear around right. Apple does lead in efficient processors, knows how to design a display and has an ecosystem to leverage. Also, they are a company that actually focuses on user experience. So it won't be a huge fail as you seem to believe. Currently, VR requires cutting-edge tech which hence why it will start out expensive. Once the user experience and use cases are nailed (the latter of which is already proven to a large extent, especially for productivity but the former holds it back today) then it's just a matter of time. For VR/AR, two things hold it back - clunkiness and user experience. Clunkiness can be ignored for now because I don't think Apple is going to market this as something they wear out in public, unlike Google Glass. User experience is what Apple is good at.
