BroliviaWilde reacted to Taf the Ghost in "The Future of written gaming content is [AI]"
The topics are already mostly chosen by AI. The content farms have been this way for several years, actually. It's early AI, but they were using versions against the SEO terms to fill out article topics. It was only a matter of time before they completely flipped to it.

There's some deep, fundamental economic issues with Game Journalism in the modern Video Era. It's not profitable to do reviews on a large scale. While the sites can generate a lot of traffic, most of that isn't worth much. Especially not enough to cover the costs of a reviewer having to spend 20+ hours on a game and the assorted time/money to capture all of the video, edit together a video and make sure the script is coherent. This is why the sites keep getting sold to different groups. They see the traffic, but that doesn't generate nearly enough revenue to keep operating as they are.

It's been a bubble since about 2009, but, because Gaming is the single largest Media/Entertainment segment, some new investor group would keep trying. Ultra low interest rates had a lot to do with dumb decision making that led to that.

The other major issue: almost none of the staff want to be there. Since it's the place where all of the money was, it attracted all of the "journalist" that couldn't get into political reporting, which is where they wanted to be. It's a low prestige section of an industry mostly about prestige.  If you ever wondered why the whole "do they hate their audience?" questions keep coming up, that's why. They mostly hate being in the space, which is why the people making money are all of the independent creators. The Video Era also means you can't fake enthusiasm. Your real opinion always filters out, unless it's a really short video.

At the rate things are going, Linus might end up buying IGN for a toonie in a couple of years, then use it to rope together a YT network of video reviewers. That's actually a viable business model.

Lastly, because of the high SEO optimization approaches, there's this little issue that much of the traffic is just bots. Like a lot of websites are mostly bots reading each other's content. That's not exactly valuable to anyone that wants to advertise. Unless they give ChatGPT access to the credit cards.

Quick Edit: Anyone remember Maker Studios? Disney paid 500 million USD and it was basically a massive money pit.  Video content, much like web content, doesn't generate large corporate revenues without a very structured advertising system involved that can keep production budgets within range for profitability.  This was an obvious in 2010 as it is in 2023, but it took billions wasted in acquisitions for anyone to understand this.

Perhaps Windows will turn into that random website that is chock-full of advertisements ot the point where it's hard to even see an article.   Or perhaps just do the same thing as AAA games do, literally stip the OS down of all content and sell that as DLC.    Sorry, you say a program has your pc locked up?  reboot it, otherwise task manager will cost you $19.99.   But for the low low low price of $4.99 you can take a chance with a lootbox and it might be in one!   and the odds will be that you'll get the time/news app instead

sigh, and if it were to happen i'd stil use it because - muh games
lol, it's not that dire, but at some point you know these things get tossed around the meeting rooms.

No the default for everything is an adult account, you have to know that it is possible to create a child account to do that. Without that knowledge that's not going to happen is it?

And your solution is to know everything about everything always all the time? Great idea there.

Online gambling websites are a thing as I have pointed out and they actually do age verification, not assume you are an adult unless you say otherwise. If something is for an adult then check they are an adult, not wait for them to tell you they are not. Simple right?

How about like, you know, do the same? Crazy idea right? Actually put some kind of verification of age, they don't even do a token gesture like pornographic sites where you just click "Yes I am 18 or over".

So stop requiring proof of age at point of sale? This happens so we don't need to do it right?

These examples of bad parenting DO NOT exempt corporations from doing better.

No they have an optional voluntary process where you can tell them you are a child, that is not age verification. At not point do they require you to verify your age so it is not age verification.

Because they are not doing a good enough job to prevent inappropriate game mechanics being exposed to children/youths or intentionally putting them in to games that they know and intend for people of a younger age to play. Or more obviously, the topic is about EA so we are talking about EA.

that's interesting,I had suspected x370 might have stability issues with the newer cpu's but never took time to research into it that much.  So to be on safe side I got an x470 taichi to pair up with a 3900x(on that launch day), I've left everything at stock and only turned on PBO and xmp profile to 3600.  Only issues i've ever had have all been Windows 10 related.   Have you considered getting a newer gen Mobo?

BroliviaWilde reacted to Briggsy in Nvidia Delays 3070 to the 29th
I've been around for the entire lifespan of GPUs, and the 3080 is not a successor to the 2080, as the 2080 is a 104 chip and the 3080 is a 102 chip. I don't really care about cost or the names nvidia give the cards, that's just marketing. The 3070 is the literal successor of the 2080 in an apples for apples comparison. Why nvidia have decided to price their cards more aggressively this time still remains to be seen, but I've been around long enough that I don't get fooled when Nvidia bump GPU tiers up and down the product stack each generation to make the improvements look better.

BroliviaWilde got a reaction from EChondo in 3080 benchmarks are in! Are they good?
one theory why that is at that  pricepoint:
competing with AMD on two fronts - RDNA2 desktop chips about to release and with the 3070 right at same price as new game consoles, some might even see the 3070 as a gateway, well hey, if you are willing to spend $500 on a gpu, maybe you might be willing to spend a bit more and get the 3080 instead.  They went with Samsung 8nm node, from what I read/watched it is considerably cheaper per wafer than what TSMC has on their 7nm, combine that with the sourness over the significant price increase on the 2080ti over the 1080ti and it just adds up.

that sucks, really gives AB a bad look.   Not all of their AB branded products are bad.  I've only bought a couple of AB products: phone charger cables, non-rechargeable batteries and monitor arms.   cables?  just as good as whatever happens to be on shelf at local grocery store or walmart, all of them tend be a little flimsy to have spotty connection after some light use while the original calbes that came with our phones still work great.  batteries?  works fine,  keeps our remotes running.  monitor arms?  very satisfied

BroliviaWilde got a reaction from TechyBen in Google Stadia in desperate need of promised "negative latency" mode
I dug out my old steam link the other day, and even after updating it - and we are on a home wired network, the latency was slight, but ti was still there, and that is over about between 50' ~ 100' of network cable.   I didn't care for it and put it away.   I then compare that to Stadia, and just how much worse Stadia would be and I can only come to one conclusion:

    Ooof

going with this line of thinking, a game service that plays the game for you?  that sounds like something ubisoft would do as a microtransaction, so you could 'save some time" if you got into the game much later than others

also, read that some games could potentially have "less latency" than a beast of a rig running the game locally that is sitting right next to you?
