If im understanding you correctly, you bricked your motherboard (probably a cheap AM3+ board) using the FX 8120? This makes sense if you are using cheap motherboard the FX 8xxx chips are 125w chips that demand alot of power especially overclocked. I would recommend you getting a 990X / 990FX chipset motherboard. However I would be remissed if I didnt say before spending X amount on a new motherboard for your OLD cpu consider a platform move to Ryzen or Skylake/Kabylake/Coffeelake. They are the most modern revisions of AMD and Intels CPU architecture. 

I'd keep the 6s +. It's definitely not a slouch, nor does it move backwards on the practical featureset.

The ASUS M5A97 R2.0 uses a 4+2 passively cooled VRM design.
It will run a FX-8120 without too many issues -- even with a mild/mid level overclock.

If your old power supply didn't kill anything else when it died, you should be okay.
4-pin CPU connection is a litle bit on low side, as the FX 8-cores can draw quite a bit of power / current.
A motherboard with an 8-pin CPU connection would be the most ideal.
 
To answer you question, yes, I do have a FX-8350...but on a ASUS Crosshair V Formula 990FX motherboard...
Your ASUS M5A97 R2.0 and my Crosshiar V Formula are on opposite sides of each other.
I have a 850W PSU paired with the system, but because I was running 2 or 3 video cards with it.
 
If you are running only 1 video card, with a few SSD/HDD, and some case fans, a good quality 500W ~ 550W should be more thane enough.
Depends on what video card you have, something lower might be okay as well (e.g. 450W).

its raw performance is better but the 0.5gb is pratically useless but is still there
like using iGPU with 4gb of ram, like 512mb is gone because iGPU vram but there's still 4gb, just 3.5gb usable 

Nu. Can't tout it as an advantage if you can't use .5GB of it. That's like saying your car is better than mine when it's missing a wheel.

Dial it back to the 6700K. The new Broadwell E, or at least that 6800k is more meant for multi-threaded stuff like content creation. Sporting less cores with higher speeds is better for gaming, Also 4GB sticks are a waste of slots if you ask me

Nope... that's not waht an enthusiast is (that's just wasting money with no reason)... anyways, i'm not here to judge. Hope he enjoys his beast
