Nicnac got a reaction from leadeater in Can't decide on NAS HW-setup
You're right I should just try it out. And good point on the Gigabit speed... HDDs it is then 😄

For a small amount of data RAID 1 would likely be the best. Don't forget HDDs can spin down so comparing power usage isn't so straight forward.
Going SSDs is of course nice and if only 2 storage devices is the most likely to have suitable performance for anything you could do. With only 2-4 SSDs I don't think they would be wasted on a Celeron J but performance will be limited.
I'm leaning towards HDDs and have a single SSD for unimportant game installs that can be re-downloaded aka no real data loss.

If you already own the hardware, there's no harm in throwing it together just to see how it runs. I bet the J1900 will easily saturate a Gigabit Ethernet connection off a pair of hard drives.
A 100% flash NAS would theoretically draw less power, but it would take ages to pay back the additional purchase cost in power savings. (Not to mention that you won't see any speed benefits over just a single Gigabit connection; that's only 100 MB/sec over SMB.) You'll want a pair of small SSDs for the boot mirror though, and if you run a media server I highly recommend an additional SSD for the metadata and thumbnails.

Big Props to OP for keeping the folding spirit alive and doing community events! Would love to join but unfortunately dont have access to my rig for a couple days 😕 Maybe I can late join but not getting my hopes up... Will join next time for sure though!!

Nicnac reacted to TetraSky in Crypto Miners buying up entire power plants
Oh cool. More fossil fuel power plants being powered back on just for the sake of mining virtual currency that people decided to attribute value to. Just what the world needed.

Nicnac got a reaction from Roswell in Why has no one made a easily upgradable laptop
because modular and upgradeable means bulky and awkward compared the the sleek ultrabooks that are around. Even a decent degree of serviceability means it can't be super thin and light anymore unfortunately 😕

Nicnac reacted to LogicalDrm in iOS App for logging work hours
I use this http://www.atimelogger.com/
There are some small annoyances to my tidyness when it comes to numbers (you can select to not adjust seconds, but it doesn't round the seconds). I have used it for work hours, allocating hours for projects and to track school hours. At the moment I have widget on home screen to quickly start and stop the project time allocation, and I've set daily goal which will calculate total time used for work.

I really like the new M1 chip and the new mac mini especially... will have to find a use case for it tho 😛 suggestions welcome haha

Nicnac reacted to jagdtigger in New GA106-302 RTX 3060 Revision coming with Hardware Based Mining Limiter coming in May, Possibly coming to the rest of RTX 30 series
Nope, all i say is that ppl should stop bitching about a graphics card getting a nerf in an aspect it sint advertised in.
Apple vs Orange.....

They paid for a graphics card not a hash accelerator card, case closed.

Nicnac reacted to AlTech in New GA106-302 RTX 3060 Revision coming with Hardware Based Mining Limiter coming in May, Possibly coming to the rest of RTX 30 series
Summary
According to sources Videocardz talked to, Nvidia are planning to release a new revision of their GA106 die codename GA106-302 which features a new Hardware Based Mining Limiter rather than relying on Software or Drivers to block mining.
The new revised 3060 die is expected to be launching next month in May.
One of their sources also has said that Nvidia could also bring this to their GA102 and GA104 dies.

My thoughts
I'm honestly not entirely sure how I feel about this. On one hand it should seriously destroy the demand for mining on RTX 3060s when this launches and the existing GA106-300 based models are all sold out. On the other hand, I am reminded of an argument someone made in a prior mining limiting thread for the 3060 about how people don't want to be told what they can't do on their graphics card that they paid for. I do forsee the OG GA106-300 models skyrocketing in price when the new GA106-302 models come out because it will be harder to buy a 3060 which can mine. I'm interested to see what this new GA106-302 variant does in hardware to nerf mining performance and I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Nicnac reacted to TetraSky in Tech Stocks
The only tech stock I own, is Apple.
And I invested when they peaked at $134 a while ago thinking it would keep going up... The very next day it started crashing hard... Bought some more when it went down to $110 to lower my average to $126... Then it finally went back up to $137.. before promptly crapping back down... Wouldn't be surprised if it went even lower for some reason. I'm in it for the long run. Here's hoping they pass the $200 bar within the next 4 years, it would essentially pay for my entire student loan.
Other than that, I mostly invested in things like big pharma, renewables, etc. ... And I got like 0.3 ETH (put in a low amount of $500 that I'm willing to lose). I'm also thinking of buying more when it crash next. Shouldn't be long now. Still don't understand why anyone is buying into Crypto... I just.... Don't get it. People are weird.

it took 2 years for it to climb that much. some people think its got space to run into the low 100
Unless TSMC can find more 7nm capacity they aren't going to be make more chips unless they move to 5nm
