  1. Hello all!' I have an issue which arose following a week long vacation during which my PC was powered off with no power supplied to it. The power strip was unplugged while we were gone, and now it just won't power on. It has behaved strangely like this before following total power loss, but usually comes back alive after a few minutes. PSU is fine, Motherboard is the issue. To note, the system WAS properly shutdown before power was pulled. System shutdown, SPU switch flipped, wall plug pulled. ASUS Z87-Pro (V-Edition) Intel i5-4590 HyperX Fury 8G stick I got these 3 as a bundle from Newegg back in July of 2015. It has been basically rock solid up until this weekend when I returned home and tried to power it on to backup vacation photos. System is running a Silverstone DA700 power supply. Initially I suspected that was the issue. Pulled it out, shorted green wire on 24 pin to ground and boom, it powers up without issue. I put it back in the system, no dice. It just doesn't start, no fan spin, no voltage coming out of the PSU. I pulled the GPU, RAM, and CPU, and same thing, the onboard power button on the motherboard lights up, along with some LEDs on the board, but the case power as well as motherboard power button will not power the board on. I know it won't boot in this state, but I would at least expect fan spin and an error code on the LED panel on the board. Ok, so at this point my only thought is that according to what I have seen from ASUS, this means that the board needs a BIOS update and won't attempt to start until that is completed. I get an 8 Gig USB drive, full format for FAT32 (not quick format), and put the BIOS on it, then rename the BIOS to Z87P.CAP as instructed in the user manual [https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1150/Z87-PRO(V_EDITION)/E8335_Z87-PRO_Edition.pdf] on page 3-1. The eject the drive, plug it into the BIOS Flashback port on the motherboard, remove EVERYTHING from the board, all cables and everything except for 24 pin power, and 8 pin power (ESP?), then hold the BIOS Flashback button to update. LED blinks, then goes solid meaning something is borked up. I tried to run the BIOS updater on a laptop to ensure the file is named properly, but that won't even properly run. At this point I have no more cuss words left and am at a total loss. Any suggestions at all? Actually, I just thought maybe the CMOS battery is bad. I have a box of brand new ones but can't seem to find it at the moment. While I am looking for that cursing more and replacing it does anyone else have other ideas? CMOS battery I thought just kept the settings within the BIOS and clock during power loss, but not the BIOS itself. Am I just going insane over here?
  2. I am so jealous! If I may inquire, what is the total power draw on that 45 drive setup, and also, I saw from the thread you posted (2017) that you WERE running Raidz2. Is that still the case, and if so, how the heck are you only using 32 Gigs of memory? Maybe I am doing something wrong, but my 14 TB setup with Rz2 is using a bunch of memory, which I have 72 gigs of. (actually I just checked, and now it says there is only 60 Gigs, wtf, and 46 gigs in use.). I think I need to actually monitor my server...... I suck.
  3. Thank you, I appreciate the response, but I don't have a need for composite/RCA input, only HDMI. I know it sounds strange to have a VCR with HDMI out, but this one absolutely does and it works.
  4. Hello all!! I am looking for an HDMI capture device. Internal, external, don't care. I'd like it to be on the cheap end, the sole purpose is to digitize VHS home movies. After that, MAYBE I will toy with setting up a DVR on my computer with it; but doubtful. I DON'T stream, and DON'T plan to, so that doesn't matter to me, NOR do I need to capture game console gameplay or anything like that. I have some old home movies on VHS from over 25 years ago and I am wanting to digitize them. At this point, i need to shell out some cash to either FIX a DVD burner I have, and record from VHS to DVD, then rip the DVD... OR... Get an HDMI capture card of aome sort for my computer, and go dirrct from VCR to the computer, which is the way I am leaning. I have been working to get my basement finished at home, and (re)discovered my old LG RC199H, which is a VCR / DVD combo machine which can record from VHS to DVD and vice versa. It can also record TV to DVD as well which is pretty cool. It also happens to have an HDMI output on it, whcih is nice. Unfortunately, the DVD player is no longer working. The motor that spins the disc died. Now, I am still waiting to hear back from LG officially, but it LOOKS like this thing is judt a regular IDE DVD burner... So... I am wondering if anyone has recomendations for an HDMI capture device for my computer. I'd LIKE to keep it under $100, as I have a few other projects eating away at cashflow at the moment.
  5. It make me really nervous to mess with it, since this is the sudoers file on the main host, issues could effect the NAS running on the host, and the media and game virtual machines. Might you know if there is a specific way to force the system to show me the differences in the modified file vs what is there now?
  6. Well.... while I will STILL have to fix this issue with the sudoers file, I DID manage to get the virtual machine up and running again, on a months old version. Back a few months I threw a 128 gig SSD into the server for this VM (for Minecraft server duties), and migrated from the RaidZ2 pool to that SSD. I copied the qcow2 file and xml file and never removed the old one. I just recopied the old back up, defined it, started it and it is working. All that is left THERE is to figure out how to move my back up file back to the server, extract the files and get them to the correct places. (I set up the auto-backups from the VM to the host machine running the NAS, and forgot the username and password for that, so will have to get that sorted too.) I am pretty happy with the progress I made today though.
  7. Thank you for the responses, I really appreciate it!!! Running it as root gives the same exact output about the sudoers file, no VM created... Running as root is what got me into this mess. Instead of just deleting a game directory and starting over again, a changing of file permissions on directories for a mod was botched while SSH'd from mobile device at the grocery store in the car with the kids waiting on the wife.. This is what did it on the virtual machine... ran it from the root directory instead of the mods directory for the game, whoops... chmod 755 $(find / -type d) I took a look at the Sudoers file, and DID find that there is one line, the Defaults line that has an extra path in there which doesn't exist on my system, not sure if that is doing it or not... the "snap/bin" directory. # # This file MUST be edited with the 'visudo' command as root. # # Please consider adding local content in /etc/sudoers.d/ instead of # directly modifying this file. # # See the man page for details on how to write a sudoers file. # Defaults env_reset Defaults mail_badpass Defaults secure_path="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/snap/bin" # Host alias specification # User alias specification # Cmnd alias specification # User privilege specification root ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL # Members of the admin group may gain root privileges %admin ALL=(ALL) ALL # Allow members of group sudo to execute any command %sudo ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL # See sudoers(5) for more information on "#include" directives:
  8. Hello all, Running my own server on a Supermicro chassis and motherboard, and came across an issue after fudging up a virtual machine. I backed up the data I needed, shut it down, undefined the machine, and deleted the qcow2 and xml files for it. I then updated the host machine and rebooted that. After trying to build another VM to replace the borked up one, I am getting an error. I have asked on Reddit and Ask Ubuntu as well, but haven't gotten anywhere, just trying to cast a net out to see if anyone may be familiar with this... I am VERY new to Ubuntu here or command line OS at all, so I am not really at all sure what to do here, and googling hasn't helped in the least. I just ran an update on my Ubuntu Server 14.04 machine and rebooted. I haven't ever touched the sudoers file, so I am suspecting some installed package did, then my update the other day tried to change that, but not sure, best guess. I am trying to create a virtual machine, and I get this error, but I have NO WAY to make a choice, it just uses default choice after about 5 milliseconds, doesn't wait for user input. Is there some other way I can FORCE this modified sudoers thing to pop up again so that I can view the differences, or just replace it? The command I used that got this output is the following: sudo ubuntu-vm-builder kvm trusty --hostname TEST-vm Here is the full output of the message in question. 9. Thank you guys for the feedback. I will have to drop them off at Goodwill at some point when I am next near there. If I ever get Cisco gear for study in the future, a 2509 or a 2511 will be a must have.
  10. Perhaps I didn't meet some requirement. Posted just about 3 months back, but hasn't been added to rankings, unless I am just overlooking it.
  11. Hey everyone, this isn't a for sale or trade thread, this is more of an opinion gathering thread. I bought a pair of Cisco 2521'so AGES ago from Ebay to use for CLI training for CCNA. Did the realise at the time they were token ring routers, and they have been dormant over a decade. Think I should bother to advertise them, or just bring them to an electronics recycling event?
  12. Is the ranking still a thing? Doesn't seem it has been updated in a few months...
  13. Tried to get a post on page 25ish, forum was completely borked. The Razer Blade 14 I would love to be able to play games on the go, as the ONLY point I seem to have free time is when I don't have access to my desktop, as it was pushed aside for my home office.
  14. You can also log into your ISP control panel and check your monthly usage. You SHOULD be able to at any rate...
  15. Speaking from experience fixing the 'Dennis hole' at my previous home, not more than maybe $20-$30 US depending on what tools you already have on hand... Doing that repair is more about the time spent than cost, as cost is minimal. It isn't a load bearing component, as Dennis demonstrated, so there is no worry about structural issues if you are just working on drywall. I got myself tools in the past and they are still working great, probably have about a dozen patches under my belt at this point between my current house and previous house. Materials - if stored correctly will last you a while Piece of drywall (make sure thickness is correct) Joint compound Joint tape Drywall screws Plastic (not needed, but that joint compound when sanded gets EVERYWHERE... I staple plastic to the cieling and make a little 'clean room' in which to work, that turns dirty quickly, but it keeps dust contained. Tools - 1 time purchase Drywall knife Joint knife (I believe that is the term) for spreading the compound) Sanding block or sand paper Drill with Phillips head bit
  16. Inherently, yes, it will give you problems. Networking gear and "The Elements" don't mix. If you get some sort of waterproof enclosure and ensure that it is installed and used properly, it may work, for a while... I am not sure if there are outdoor rated patch panels for copper or fiber, but a brief google search didn't turn up anything other than cabinets. Being as this will be outside, the call will be greater than it would be if it was indoors. I would recommend outdoor rated cables for anything that runs into the cabinet. My concern would be that copper patch panel is going to corrode, and you may have issues with it. Perhaps cover unused ports with some type of rubber plug? But then the punch down portion is still exposed and THAT may corrode. Perhaps a female-female RJ45 pass-through could help. Having it under the roof will help for gentle rain coming straight down, but what about gusts of wind that blow the rain against it? Sun? Heat? Humidity? Personally, I wouldn't have anything installed unless the location is 'environmentally friendly"...
  17. Ask I mentioned previously, what is the 'other network equipment' that will be in the cabinet?
  18. Can you elaborate as to what exactly will be IN the network cabinet? Are we talking about just a small SOHO router? If space is an issue, make a small shelf, or mount it to a wall up high somewhere, and issue solved. Is there other equipment that would be in the cabinet as well? As echo'd above, unless you are going to spend some SERIOUS dollars on this enclosure, NO, it isn't worth it.
  19. I wouldn't run without the Cat, I do still have to pass emissions, lol. Just not sure if I should use the Cat which is already there... it is just rusty, but appears to be pretty solid to me, so not sure if it needs to be replaced. Maybe when I have the front end up to do the water pump I will have to look at the Cat to headers connection to see if that is getting bad too. This job keeps getting more and more expensive. [EDIT]I guess I can't complain about the cost, been a few years since I have had to put any money into the car aside from gas and oil Changsha...[/EDIT]
  20. 2005 Scion xB 5 speed - it isn't fast or powerful, but couldn't care less, gets me from A to B with great mileage, and drives like a go kart. Have had possession of it since 1 mile on odometer, sitting around 163k right now. I drive very spiritedly, it's enjoyable. Have wanted a Subaru since before the bug-eyed WRX (I LOVED the old 2.5RS). Stil love the looks of the Subaru's, and the sound of that boxer engine. May look into a Legacy as a next car. Would LOVE a WRX STi model, but this would be a daily driver, wouldn't EVER see a track, and I am getting older, and am liking luxury models. Drove a fairly new twin turbo V6 BMW x5 in Texas for a few days ago a couple months back on a vacation, and fell in LOVE with it, then reality came crashing back down on me, and I was back in the xB, Bummer. lol. Finally putting my garage and tools to good use at our new house for the first time since we moved in a couple years ago. This is my first major dabble in engine exhaust repair. I have done plenty of replacing things in interiors over the years, panels, windows, radios, stereo installs, and some minor exterior stuff like door handle replacement, ghetto rigging body trim back into place, headlights, bulbs etc. Have done some mior engine stuff, replaced a few alternators, spark plugs, etc. MOST of my previous experience is on engines that sit in a bay the size of a kitchen that you can practically crawl into, this one is CRAMPED... Currently suffering from a hole in exhaust I discovered a few months back, been sitting on replacement parts in garage since May. Also what I am HOPING is a dead water pump. Have been having an off noise from the engine for the past few days, related to RPM. Had it replaced around 80k, 5k outside of warranty period, but dealer still covered it, so it wouldn't surprise me that it may need to be replaced now. The overheat indicator came on the other day, then the next day after lunch with my brother, (less than 3 miles each way) and only about 15 minutes of use in a 24 hour period, when I got home, heat was POURING out of the grill when I walked in front of the car. In the picture, you can see the wet garage floor which is the stock coolant leaking out of somewhere... Already ordered the replacement water pump, pully and thermostat, just waiting on arrival. I have been good with oil changes and other things like brakes and tires, and the car has held up pretty well in my opinion. Stock spark plugs had no issues till I lost a cylinder the day I moved into my house a few years back, thought the stock plug gave out after 130k miles. That wasn't it, pulled the CEL code, ended up being ignition coil, swapped that out and all good. Still running great on the stock clutch too. Knock on wood. Muffler pipe HAD a hole in it, got replacement parts in May, just got around to doing it, wasn't a priority. Found the connection COMPLETELY rusted apart. Who needs a muffler anyway? Have had jack stands and a jack for years, but only tried to use them twice. First time was on my wife's CRV, jack was too short to even TOUCH the jack points fully extended, fak... that issue was a loose Cat heat shield, fixt without jacking it up using large hose clamps around it. Problem solved... Had to borrow another jack from my inlaws to get the car up another 2-3" to actually be able to get under it, got the muffler off. Wasn't bad with the exhaust removal tool. Fought with it for a WHILE with a variety of other tools, broke down this morning with Amazon same day shipping and got an exhaust removal tool. Next issue, turns out the resolnator pipe and Cat are ONE piece on the OEM exhaust.... wasn't expecting this... FAK. Replacement resonator pipe has a slip fitting, and no Cat.... Now to just figure out WTF to do.... Sawzall the cat pipe just behind the oxygen sensor, or get a replacement cat and replace full system from the cat all the way back... Leaning towards the cheaper option with cutting the existing pipe, and hoping it fits the slip fitting. Also not sure if I will need to do anything with the hangers, as the shape is a little different than the OEM ones. Any thoughts and/or suggestions on what to do with the cat & resonator issue?
  21. As noted by previous posters, any network switch will do. As clarified by the previous post, your only real choices here are going to be if you want a 10/100 Meg switch, or a 1000 Meg (Gigabit) switch.
  22. As @Xineas noted above, a Layer 2 switch WILL NOT WORK between the modem and the router. The modem needs to be connected to a Layer 3 device, which performs NAT. Here is what I would do in your situation. Leave the setup as it is, bringing 2 cables from the garage into the house. (Are we talking an attached garage, or a separate structure here?) Depending on what the garage is determines how you get the cables into the house. The reason I say TWO cables, if one of them for some reason has issues and goes bad, you already have another one in place ready to go, just swap the equipment to that other cable while you make repairs on the first cable. I would then connect the 5 port switch to the cable, giving you ports for any hard wired devices IN the house. I would then get a wireless access point, and connect it to one of the ports on the switch, giving you 3 free ports. If you already have other wireless AP's try them, or do research and make a purchase. If funds allow, I would recommend a Unify UAP-LR - under $80 US on Amazon. https://www.ubnt.com/unifi/unifi-ap/ https://www.amazon.com/Enterprise-System-UBIQUITI-NETWORKS-UAP-LR/dp/B00HXT8S9G
  23. With your being employed, are you helping your parents with income, or just trying to earn some cash for yourself? If the latter, it seems like the logical choice would be to look into a different form of employment, as school should be TOP priority. Look at things offering different hours to allow more time to complete school work, or to working Sat & Sun. If it is an issue of helping your parents with income, you have to draw the line and put your foot down, state that school work comes first, and either work has to go, or changes need to be made with regard to the internet availability for your school work use. I have had 3 jobs in my life, first one started at a facility with a bar and a hall that would rent it out for parties, events, etc. etc, and was setting up tables and chairs from 7th to 8th grade. 9th grade started working a different job doing clean up in the food service industry and moved to a different position when I turned 18, but I always made school work my priority. Didn't do fantastic in school, but was better than average. Worked that job for about 10.5 years, the last 5 years of which were worked part time on my days off from my current job working network support for an ISP which I have been at over 13 years now. It is all about making use of your time and getting priorities in line. I didn't read every post in detail, but is there a possibility of talking with a neighbor to be able to connect to their Wifi?
