bobhays got a reaction from Ben17 in Looking for advice on a DIY Home Server Build
everyone is recommending hardware but for the software side I suggest FreeNAS. With the plex plugin you can handle the media and server side transcode. I've never hosted game servers so I'm not sure how to go about that. There are torrent plugins for FreeNAS that you could probably set up with the RSS feed, using the Transmission plug-in you can do manual torrents. OwnCloud/NexCloud will work for you cloud needs and they have multiple users. For back ups you'd need to set that up on the client side, but you can just store them on your NAS.

The only things I'm not sure about is the game server, VPN, and automated file organization. I'm sure you can figure out the VPN and file organization but I'm not so certain about the game server.

No you can't because the heads are all linked together and the data you need isn't in the same position in all the platters of the hard drive. Multiple actuators allow the heads to seek to different positions on the platter.

bobhays reacted to LukeSavenije in Bethesda removes DRM from Rage 2 after just two days
    Source: Tweakers (Dutch)

Bethesda removed the Denuvo-drm from Rage 2 only two days after releasing. The developers say they have had a 'number' of requests to do that. Earlier it turned out that the version that Bethesda sells through its own launcher did not have Denuvo.

I don't mind it having a DRM for the first day, even as heavy as Denuvo. It keeps some money for the developers before it gets cracked. So I think it was a bad idea from Bethesda to not running it on their own launcher in the first place.

    Any thoughts?

they couldn't have done that without a smaller production node
seriously, this isn't a complicated concept. Stop insisting, you're just wrong.
What are you even talking about? Transistor count is what matters here, and you're getting at least twice as many transistors in the same space.
False, and even if it were true a stock 2700x still smokes a 5GHz 2600k.
and they can do that because they're on a smaller die size than they were when sandy bridge came out.

Photopea is a free, online alternative to Photoshop. Unless you need alot of the deeper features that PS offers, I'd feel reasonably confident recommending it.

As for Lightroom, this may be a step in the wrong direction but Capture One Pro is very advanced, has full camera raw support, and lets you shoot tethered. You can use the trial version and decide if you'd like to pony up for the real deal. No subscription.

Screwing over users by giving more stuff out for free. That is such a funny way to see things.

I still can't use this free feature on my Google Home, because Developers need to implement the free connect feature in their software first.
Kinda crazy that this might make you happy.

I for one am happy about this change. I don't use any of the premium Features, but connect was indeed a consideration, just did not want to shell out a full premium for a feature i may use once every month or so. Also: I am always happy to see people get good stuff for cheap / free. My life does not get worse, just because others are happy.

Seriously, you should consider overthinking that attitude.

bobhays reacted to Commodus in Spotify screws over Premium Users and lets Free users use Spotify Connect
There's absolutely nothing wrong with this.

The main reason you pay for Premium is to get rid of the ads and play music while offline.  The need for Premium to play on connected devices was a holdover from an era when gadgets like smart speakers were seen as rare extras.  It's just another platform -- your ability to play music shouldn't by limited by whether or not a device has a screen.

I never quite get the notion that giving free users more features is a bad thing.  It's not an exclusive club where you're trying to exclude as many people as you can.

I'll do something I don't do often: quote from the Bible:
Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard, Matthew 20:1-16.

Or said in another way: What's it to paid users that free users now get this feature?
Paid users are still getting what they pay for.

bobhays reacted to Scheer in Spotify screws over Premium Users and lets Free users use Spotify Connect
I guess I just see things a little differently, I don't quite understand how you can be mad that features you like are now free? If its no longer worth it to you to pay for premium, then don't pay for premium...

Paid tiers don't have to be value adds, the new thing to do (and I'm a huge fan of it) is for the paid tier to simply be the "fast ring", and eventually it trickles down to free and the paid tier gets something else new to themselves. Plex does a great job at this.

Also, from a quick search, the 20% are using more bandwidth as they have a higher bitrate (costs Spotify more money) and don't have to listen to ads (Spotify makes less money), so there is some of the skew in your numbers and I'm sure there is more.

What do you do when you need to transfer something bigger than 4gb like a zip file or movie, iso, etc.?
Also think about it from a typical user perspective. You put a file on a hard drive and now you want to use it from your other computer. They don't understand what hard drive formats are so it wouldn't even be in their mind that there would be an issue.
