  1. ok I might do that but the problem isn't that bad so I might just live with it.
  2. Oh so you need an amp/dac combo then or an amp and a dac? Just a dac does not have anything to plug your headphones in. Dac plugs into amp which you can plug your headphones into. In which case, I recommend the schiit modi and magni combo (latest versions, once again). Total comes to $200 and they are both great value products.
  3. Hi all, I just got a pair of KZ ZST IEMs and I am very impressed with how good they sound for only $20. However, I've noticed that when I use them with anything but my phone that there is quite a bit of static noise. I have tried using it with my LG G6 phone, Scarlett solo headphone out, teac ai101da headphone amp, and fiio e17k headphone amp. All the external amps have built in dacs. On my Teac it sounds more like a ground loop buzzing than static. I have tried my HD 6XX with all of these sources as well as my NHT superzero speakers and they do not have the same issue. At first I thought it might be that the impedance might be too high on my external sources (the LG G6 phone doesnt have the static problem) but that can't be true since the fiio e17k has an impedance of only 1.1ohms and the impedance on the KZ ZST IEMs is 10ohms. Anyone know what the problem is?
  4. Schiit modi (whatever the latest version is) is a great dac and you won't get anything substantially better until hundreds of dollars more. It's probably the best dac for its price
  5. Thank you so much for the reply. My recording would be mainly with alto and tenor saxophone. I am leaning toward the NTK however in the seller's listing he said at one point a previous owner may have been a smoker. I'm worried as to whether this may affect the performance of the mic. Would you know anything on the subject? Thanks!
  6. The shock mount won't fit your mic. It's 43-46mm and the at2020 diameter is 52mm. And no you shouldn't have any quality problems with any of the products. However, the audio interface is very cheap and not very good audio quality. If you can spring an extra $25 you can find a focusrite Scarlett solo used on eBay for around $50. I just got one today and it's perfectly working and in good condition so you should have no problem finding one. If not, the one you chose should be fine for the time being at least. And yes, the at2020 should be a bit better quality than the yeti, with better upgradeability considering it is xlr and not USB.
  7. I've tried them both, but don't remember them that well. If my memory serves me the pxc550 were more neutral and had better clarity than the hd1. Soundstage is pretty small on both. Noise cancelling is pretty much the same. They're both comfortable I don't remember preferring either one in comfort. Hd1 are a bit bassier if that's what you like. I'd go for the pxc 550 unless you like bass, then id go for the hd1
  8. I am looking for a microphone to get me into the world of home recording for my saxophone with a budget of $200 for the mic. I have found some great deals on ebay where I could potentially get an at4033 or a rode NTK within my budget. The NTK is priced very aggressively in an ebay auction (starting bid $125) so there is a chance I will not be able to get it depending on how much interest it gets. I understand the at4033 and NTK are very different mics, but I was wondering if anyone knew which one would record a saxophone better. The NTK is obviously more expensive but I know that doesn't always mean everything. Thank you!
  9. I've heard pretty great things about the akg k550, but some not so great things about the hd599, specifically muddy bass. Id recommend the k550 over the hd599. However, for the price I'd go for the massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6xx for $200 usd if international shipping with them isn't a pain. They are incredibly good headphones and in another league than the other two in terms especially in terms of clarity and imaging(placement of audio subjects). I use them to game and it's very easy to hear enemy footsteps approaching and has saved me quite a few times. In terms of the fiio, I wouldn't spring for it just because you have the Asus Maximus ix hero which already has pretty good audio and you won't hear much difference. I'd recommend just saving that money for better headphones. If you can spring for them, the monoprice monolith m1060 are even better than the 6xx, though they might need an amp. I'll get back to you later with more info.
  10. If you are perfectly satisfied, there isn't much point in getting better gear, but if you want to see what higher end audio is all about, you can't go wrong by getting a pair of cans like the Sennheiser HD 6xx from massdrop ($200). If the HD 58x ($150) come back, they could be a good deal too, I haven't tried them but I've heard good things about them. I wouldn't really recommend getting an amp until you get to some higher end headphones because while both those cans definitely benefit from one, the audio interface should power them fine and it's better to invest that money in new headphones instead. Or you could just get an amp to have some nice eye candy on your desk ?.
  11. Hi all, I'm going to my first ever Canjam pretty soon (Canjam NYC) and I was hoping to get some tips. I was definitely planning on bringing my fiio e17k with a USB and aux cable along with some flacs on my phone. However, I really want to try out some amps and dacs(namely schiit and woo audio) to see how they sound and I'm not really sure how it works getting headphones to listen to them. I have the HD 6xx and it would be great to listen to the amps with the 650s, and I don't want to have to bring mine but might if that's the only way I'll be able to listen to them. On the flip side, what kinds of amps/dacs will headphone booths like Sennheiser, audeze and hifiman have? I assume very neutral whatever they are. Thank you!
  12. Hi all, as many of you probably know the Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6xx just came back to Massdrop and I was wondering if I should get them. Right now I have a pair of 598s and would like to upgrade, and I can afford the $200 price tags of the 6xx. I mainly listen to jazz and I have heard mixed reports on whether or not these are good for jazz, I have heard many say the 600s are better. I have a solid state amp I could use to power these (Teac ai101da) and while it is not the most powerful I suspect it will get the job done. So should I buy these headphones to listen to jazz?
  13. Hi all, I am looking to up my audio game by purchasing an amp/dac for my senn hd 598s or possibly new headphones. I know the hd 598s do not need amplification, but I have heard they benefit from it and my motherboard audio (realtek alc1150) is a bit muddy in the bass, and I have a feeling my 598s have more potential than just my motherboard audio. I was considering a magni 3/ modi 2 stack, but then I heard about the audio gd nfb11.28 which seems to be praised as incredibly good for the price, even being better than much more expensive solutions. I'd ideally like to stay closer to $200 and don't want to have to deal with the hassle of actually obtaining an nfb11.28, but would stretch my budget if it's worth it. However, do you think it is even worth it to buy an amp/dac and do you think I should just save up for new headphones. Note: I will upgrade to something like the hd 600s or something comparable in the future, but I figure it makes sense to buy an amp/dac now so I can have it for when I upgrade as opposed to just saving up for new headphones and an amp/dac with them. I listen to almost exclusively jazz and I like a large soundstage with clean but neutral and balanced bass. Thank you!
  14. I strongly recommend the Sennheiser HD 598 (whatever color variant you want). Just make sure you get the open back version cuz I know they came out with a closed back version, but open back will have a bigger soundstage which will be better for gaming. I own a pair of these headphones, and they offer incredible audio quality for the price (~$140), and they do not need an amp or mac but I have heard they benefit from one if you want to upgrade down the line. Alternatively, if you want to max out your budget the Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6xx (If they drop again) for $200 with a magni amp and modi day from schiit audio ($200 combo). NOTE: I HAVE NOT tried this, but I have heard people say these headphones are the best value headphone out there with no exceptions. Alternatively you could try the Massdrop x AKG K7xx for $200 as well as these could be found more easily.
  15. Thank you everyone for your input in this topic. I think I will go for the Silent Wings 3 as many people have commented that they are the quietest under full load. My only goal was the quietest fans you can buy, and I like the aesthetics of them fine, so the Silent Wings 3 seem to be a good fit for me. Thank you everyone, and feel free to keep debating fans in this thread.
  16. With mining it could be that since it is not always at every moment performing calculations, the usage could be going down in those small amounts of downtime, and thus the speeds go down. I'd say as long as you Mh/s rates are fairly consistent you should be fine.
  17. Agreed, many people praise EVGA for their great quality, but there are some EVGA model power supplies with horrible ratings. In general, check ratings for those individual power supplies and you should be good
  18. Hi all! I currently have in my system the stock fans that came with my NZXT s340 case and Kraken x61 radiator. They cool fine and haven't broken, but they are loud, so loud that when I measured my system while gaming, it measured 55 decibels! After much research, I have decided that I think i will replace my 2 radiator fans and my 2 case fans with Be Quiet! Silent Wings 3 140mm PWM. This is an expensive investment for fans, but worth it to me if it means very quiet performance while still cooling just fine and the possibility of moving these fans to future cases. I am not looking to set world records for cooling, I just want my components to be cooled well enough to keep their current overclocks. I have an Intel i5 600k overclocked to 4.5Ghz and an MSI GTX 1070 Gaming 8G overclocked to 1873Mhz. Both run stably and the cpu never goes above ~60-65C and the gpu never goes above ~70-74C when in stress tests. My question: will the Be Quiet! Silent Wings 3 maintain my performance and also give me quieter operation and better control? Thank you!
  19. Yeah, after some research those seem like very good options. I'll look into getting my hands on them
  20. OK thank you for informing me. Sorry if I'm a little ignorant but I am fairly new to the higher end audio community. I think that they are mostly muddy, but also a little boomy.
  21. What I don't like is how boomy and how muddy the double bass is. It is a little loud, but if it was as clean as real life I wouldn't mind too much. It's just how boomy the sub bass is that devours all the other frequencies. I like the ~250-500hz range because thats what the low end of the tenor saxophone is and I play the tenor saxophone. The bass is not too loud in those frequencies. If the sub bass was clearer, it would be fine being at the volume it is, but it is not incredibly clear and I don't expect it to be for $150 headphones.
  22. Thanks for letting me know. Would you happen to know of any open backed pairs in either of those lines with a big soundstage like the sennheiser 598?
  23. I'm coming from the sennheiser hd 449. The 598s have a better soundstage and clarity overall, but they seem much more bass heavy. The hd 449 did seem a little light on the bass, but the 598 seem too heavy. Maybe it's just that I don't like bass very much
  24. It could be my dac, amp or preamp. The acoustic bass is muddy on the low end, and it is fairly loud. It also could just be the recordings I listen to as I have listened to some more modern folk rock recordings (I listen to mostly 80s or earlier jazz) and it sounds more balanced.
  25. Ok, I think I'll play around with some EQ first, but I might have to sell them. Are there any other headphones you would recommend with my desired sound signature (not too much bass with more pronounced upper mids) around $150? Preferably open back, as I love the enormous soundstage of my current headphones.
