All in one home media/gaming remote server
molke replied to molke's topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
okay, then I will just start with one of those first -
Hi there, Over the last couple of months, I have been researching different solutions to my "problem." I am looking into building a home server capable of running Plex as a media server for my movies and shows, as well as being able to run a gaming virtual machine (VM) on the server that I can remotely access to play games from anywhere. My first thought was to have a simple NAS, which I could run games off while using a strong laptop or something like that. However, from my research, it seems that building a more powerful home server is the way forward, which can be accessed from any device anywhere. Therefore, I'm here to ask for some guidance. My current idea is to build a system that includes: Case: Fractal Design Define 7 HDD: 5x 10 TB NAS drives (RAID 6) to keep my data safe and not have to upgrade for a while SATA expansion: Link to the SATA expansion card (for future expansion) and a 10 Gb PCIe. I'm having trouble figuring out the rest of the system to make it powerful while still maintaining a reasonable power bill. I'm planning on running AAA games and emulators on the VM. The plex side is not gonna run much transcoding, if any. I have looked into using Parsec or sunshine/moonlight for game streaming. But can't find requirements for specs on the client side. Hope your guys can help me

Make sense didn't think of it that way So it is all about the power of the CPU in a NAS? and does the amount of ram has a factor as well, think I read somewhere that a lot of ram would also help with the performance.

Thanks for all the advises I will look into building my own NAS. I was wondering if I need to use raid 10, I know its the best for speed and safety, but I feel like you lose so much storage, and I haven't experienced a drive die on me yet? so if I get a 6 core 12 thread Xeon f.x I can stream 4k videos or do I need even more horsepower? for now, the budget is not set, so I'm mainly just looking into what is necessary to have to make the NAS 4k capable and future proof

Hi there I need some guidance. My plan is to have a nas, which can stream multiple 1080p streams to 3-4 devices at once, and also be capable of streaming 4k videos. I'm thinking of having around 20 TB for future-proof. I have surged and found a Netgear which claims to be able to handle multiple 1080p streams. https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-ReadyNAS-Performance-Processor-RN42600-100NES/dp/B071VPMZ7L/ref=sr_1_52?ie=UTF8&qid=1515356384&sr=8-52&keywords=nas+case the pc needs to be able to handle a few old games like need for speed and streaming Netflix or other streaming services. So here are my questions: Would it be a good idea to build a combined nas/pc like linus shows in https://youtu.be/dpXhSrhmUXo or should I build two separate machines, and/or can a consumer nas handle 4k streams without being too expensive? And what kind of hardware should I look into if I need to build my own nas, which can handle everything with buffering or any other stuff thrown at it? I do not have any build planned yet, so am open to all ideas, and here your opinions
