Have you tried monitoring GPU and CPU usage, that way you could potentially see what is holding you back. Also looking at the video Linus recently posted on Half Life Alyx it seems that a 1060 can do pretty well, so I'd imagine it could be that your CPU and potentially RAM is holding you back, but again, you might just want to monitor CPU and GPU usage using something like MSI AfterBurner just to make sure.

I don't think there is a reason to tease the OP asking this question.

    It is a legit question.

Maybe it is just because I remember a time where both NVIDIA and AMD routinely just used the same GPUs across their spread of cards and just cut them down via software.

I still remember when you could easily turn a Geforce 6800 into a 6800GT with a BIOS flash, as all of the hardware was identical, just shut off via firmware/bios.

Modders almost never bought a GT at the time because why spend the money when the only difference was 4 pixel pipelines that were still present on the vanilla card.

This was fairly common a decade ago, so you never know. People now are flashing RX 5700s into XTs and getting most of the performance back, so you never know. It's very generation specific.

Sadly, this is not the case with a 2080 and 2080S.

If money is no object, get a high end X570 and a nice 3600 ram kit and be done with it.

You can do similar if you do your research on B450 boards that support faster ram.

I do agree with @Streetguru that if you can spend it, go X570 and do it right.

I would argue in favor of the PS4 Pro, because you are robbing yourself out of premiere single player experiences like God of War and Horizon: Zero Dawn.

You say that, but it really is a major boost for those doing content creation and running a home server. More bandwidth and faster read/write speed will always be better for those types of use cases. For gaming? You can only load a game so fast. They are getting bigger though, so it is an only a matter of time until that is beneficial.

That's why, IMO, the faster storage is the biggest perk of PCI-E 4.0. I bet in 3-5 years, We will all be itching for those speeds. It's just how the technology goes.

No, it's just that no GPU is even close to capable of saturating a PCIe 3.0 x16 connection, and that's comparable to PCIe 4.0 x8. The 2080TI is only losing about 3% of its performance downgrading all the way to PCIe 3.0 x8, so you can see how far ahead the connection protocol is from real-world usefulness apart from storage.

With that said, X570 and Ryzen 3000 is the way to go.

X570 is the most future proof platform on the market, thanks to supporting much faster storage and the new PCI-E spec.

In all of my years doing this stuff, I'd say having that stuff is probably more important than everything else.

With Socket AM4, you can go up to Zen 3 without much issue. RAM and Storage are easier to upgrade. Video cards will be upgraded.

Changing your entire platform because you want faster storage and video cards a few years from now potentially being limited by PCI-E 3.0? That's a heavier lift.

People here may argue that we are a long time away from needing PCI-E 4.0 for graphics, but I think if we make any major advancements in ray tracing compute, we will hit that wall sooner rather than later.

I will disagree that the 3600 perform better then the 2700, the 2700 is cheaper then the 3600 (in Canada at least), they perform about the same in average FPS. The 2700 can be overclocked to the same as the 2700X and they are very low priced these days. Get 3200mhz cl14 ram and you will probably outperform a stock 3600 cpu. The 2nd gen Ryzen is still very impresive when overlocked, most people think 3rd gen Ryzen are way better then the 2nd gen but it's not that much of an increase in overall performance.
Get the MSI B450 Tomahawk or the X470 Pro Carbon if you can afford it, with a Ryzen 2700 and 3200mhz cl14 RAM, you won't regret not buying a 3rd gen Ryzen.

What frame rates are you getting now?

I would plan to do a full upgrade to ensure you get what you are asking for.

For the price of a 2080, you could get:

    16GB DDR4 3600 RAM
    Ryzen 5 3600 w/ stock cooler
    Socket AM4 (B450) motherboard
    and an RTX 2060S / RX 5700

That will get you the frame rates you are looking for too, while getting you better performance for basically everything else.

You can even spring for an after market cooler to overclock the Ryzen 5 too if you aren't hitting 144hz, but tbh, I am hitting 150+ fps in most esports titles with my Ryzen 7 1700 at 3.9ghz with an RX 5700XT just fine, so I imagine a Ryzen 5 3600 with the stock cooler will do the job without an issue.

You can get Magix Movie Studio 15/16/17 really cheap at retail

Magix Vegas Pro goes on the humble bundle store often for $25

You can try resolve otherwise it's free, and it's been improved a lot as far as video editing software goes.

I actually do a bit of guess work as 2560x1080 is right in between 1080P and 1440P, so looking at both gives me an idea of what I'll get.

A reboot fixes it. I wouldn't classify this problem as a reason to avoid the card.

I did just upgrade to 19.10.2 and the experience has been far more stable while toying with the AMD Overlay.

If your budget is that low, a better power supply and a new RX 570/580 is my recommendation.

you are running an i3-8100, so those cards will max out your CPU.

4C/4T will struggle with more modern AAA titles, so I think that's the highest you should go.

Eh, in my experience Shadowplay is vastly better than ReLive. Less buggy, higher quality, and you can set actually logical keybinds.

1080 Ti is a stellar card (going used, it's much better bang for the buck than the 2080S as well, unless you need RT/the NVENC encoder), though the 1070 should be able to push 1440p pretty well still. I'd defo wait till you get the monitor and test it out before you decide for sure if you want an upgrade or not.

Are people in this thread seriously trying to say the RTX 2060S is comparable to the 5700XT in gaming performance?

Based on respected reviewers, the 5700XT is 5%-10% slower than the 2070 Super on average across dozens of games.

The RTX 2060S's niche is honestly for those both serious about streaming and content creation along with gaming. it blows the RX 5700 series out of the water in terms of what it can churn out in content creation tasks and the better NVENC makes it light years better for Streaming and any other GPU accelerated tasks. Until Navi drivers aren't iffy and AMD fixes VCE support (since the hardware isn't bad, just the software side is trash), the RTX 2060S is the better all around card. If you are just gaming and the other stuff isn't that critical to you, get the 5700XT and enjoy the better gaming experience.

When it comes to ray tracing, performance is pretty bad across the board and only the 2080ti really gets good performance using it. We are along way away from most games having great implementation with it too, since let's be real, any of the console games currently in development are not using ray tracing in any meaningful way. The new consoles release over a year from now. I wouldn't expect real showings of ray tracing on consoles until 2021. By that time, cards will be out that can achieve 60fps+ at 1080p+, and that's when it will matter. That will also be the time where upgrading the cards we own today will make sense for better ray tracing performance among other perks. I doubt a single person on this forum is going to be recommending a current generation RTX card for ray tracing a year+ from now and most will be recommending to upgrade if at all possible.

With that rant out of the way, I would get an RTX 2080 over an RTX 2070 Super if they are the same price. It is still a smidge faster, so why not get more performance for your money?

Ryzen 3000 is near it's limit out of the box, but if you want to do like a custom water cooling loop and push it harder you'd want the nicer VRM on X570

my main point is that X570 isn't much more expensive in the long run, so you might as well get the upgrade, minor though it may be.

B450 is fine if you just want to save the money.
