  1. That box is actually for connecting to a desktop computer using PCIe riser cables. I would suggest getting the cheaper option Thunder2 PCIe Expansion Box and doing a DIY guide such like Dschijn's.
  2. Yeah, why the heck not?! Ahaha. I'm just saying, you probably don't need to spend a lot when you don't really need to. However, if you're really worried about back-ups failing or drive failure, the Thunder3 Duo Pro might not be a bad choice. It has a Hardware RAID Controller with RAID 1. So you won't have to worry about your data unless both drives fail. 'Bottleneck' might not be the right term, it's more of Thunderbolt3 allows the HDD to transfer at it's fullest potential.
  3. There is also the AKiTiO Thunder2 PCIe Box which is cheaper. Not officially supported for GPU use because power supply is too weak and the enclosure can't house most GPUs. I know another forum has a sub-forum dedicated to modifying enclosures into eGPUs. Can't say what forum it is because I believe that's against this forum's policy. You can easily google it though and I believe googling "DIY eGPU forum" will get you the first link. AKiTiO Thunder2 PCIe Box - $219 https://amzn.com/B00LTAUTHE
  4. @Bleedingyamato Just remember, even on a Thunderbolt 3 connection, speeds will still only be as fast as the drive itself. Unless you plan on daisy-chaining multiple enclosures in the future, a simple USB 3.1 Type-C enclosure will suffice. @Hanno Don't know if the other replies cleared this up for you, but to put in another perspective, you can't fit an Elephant (Thunderbolt 3 Razer Core) into a straw (USB3 Laptop). However, an Elephant (Thunderbolt 3 Laptop) can easily devour a straw (USB3 Device).
  5. Just to stand out in trade shows! Ahaha. Final color will be somewhere in the silver to black spectrum.
  6. Here's a blog post from AKiTiO. https://www.akitio.com/blog/articles/egpu-thunderbolt3-intel-skull-canyon-nuc There's currently no official product page for it, but I'm sure it'll go up for pre-order soon. There's posts about it too on their social media.
  7. If you're not in a rush since you say you won't be going till next year, just wait it out a bit to see how the Thunderbolt 3 market shapes out. Things will hopefully get cheaper and there may be some sweet deals during Cyber Monday and Black Friday. AKiTiO has an eGPU coming out, planned Q4 this year. Will be affordable! But if you are in a rush, I would suggest taking @D2ultima's advice and go for a Clevo. I have a Razer Blade Stealth and it just has way too many issues that I simply just stick with my MacBook Pro now, playing games through a Windows EFI. When I can afford a new laptop, Clevo is at the top of my list or until the new MBPs with TB3 come out. Even then, be a little patient. There's a lot of cool new tech coming out. Modular technology is the big thing coming up now, so I'm sure companies in the industry are building cool stuff that might be really affordable, and worth the money and the wait in the long run.
  8. I currently have a MSI GTX 660. Super old but still runs newer games at 60+ fps if I put everything on low. Haven't been able to upgrade because NVIDIA cards aren't cheap. The new line of AMD cards are though!
  9. If you're getting a Thunderbolt 3 laptop, the AKiTiO Thunder2 PCIe Expansion Box won't work without a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 Adapter. The port design for Thunderbolt 3 is a USB Type-C Connector, while Thunderbolt 2 is it's own design. In terms of everything else, I think you got it! Just gotta have that adapter, or just wait till a Thunderbolt 3 eGPU comes out.
  10. They work pretty well. I got to try out the AKiTiO eGPU and Razer Core at NAB 2016. Both work wonders when it comes to upgrading your graphics for your laptop. Not a gimmick! The guys at the AKiTiO booth said theirs will be cheaper though, so I'm going to wait for that.
