Started building computers in the late '90s, became a huge hobby throughout high school. I am known as the hardware guru in the family whereas my dad is the software guru working at an Air Force base as head of computer security. Graduated from ITT Tech in 2011 with my Bachelors in Game Design specializing in Level Design, Coding, Documentation, and Game Theory. Although health problems halted any movement in my career sadly. Currently disabled and work on computers as much as I can as a hobby, although it is becoming more clear each day that I think I want to work on computers as a living.

  1. Wow, I saw some people comment on manual level printers but didn't know it was that bad. I had planned to get an automatic bed leveling printer, my hands are so damn shaky because of my health that I don't think I could do it manually honestly lol. Do you know of a brand that has better automatic leveling than others by chance? I'm a bit on the fence about getting a resin printer but I know resin is a bit more expensive than plastic/metal/wood filaments from what I saw. Should I stay away from resin for my first printer or should that really matter? As for the solder kit, I looked at it and I think you just swayed me toward it. Of course I'm gonna need a separate clamp setup to keep stuff still, and still need the lamp + magnifying lens combo unless those together aren't all that great. Still new territory for me, I've been building and doing IT work on computers and the like for roughly 21 years now and never touched any soldering kit.
  2. So I recently have been going through my desk and cleaning it out, rerouting cables, j channels etc etc and was reminded that I need to get a replacement lamp. I have a rather large desk and constantly have to move this thing around, and it still uses old bulbs as this thing is over 20 years old. Upon looking at new lamps, I realized that I didn't know what I really needed to look for. I've been playing with the idea of building Gunpla, learning more about soldering, and also working on 3D models as I decided printers are at a state of reliability now. My issue though, I have had a fine muscle control disorder for going on over 10 years and my hands are really shaky these days without my control. So what I decided I needed to do is find a new lamp (with magnifying lens if possible), a good helping hands station, and probably a decent soldering station as the one I have is literally just from an old IT kit I bought many years ago when Fry's was still a thing. Also, and this might be a bit of a stretch, am looking for a decent starter 3D printer to learn the ropes but will also last till I deem myself fit to work up to a larger 3D printer for larger projects (if that is really a thing these days?) I know the basics about what I need to look for, and I only know of a few brands that are decent, but again I haven't worked with 3D printers before and don't know what to look out for. Budget for 3D printer: $1000 - $1500 Budget for Lamp/Lens/Helping Hands/Solder: $200-$300 Thanks in advance for the advice!
  3. Yea tried multiple different cables that I had laying around, as well as the power connector and still no detection. I tried 2 laptops, it worked twice in my old G75 (was intermittent). And tried 3 other computers, one that was just collecting dust, at least 8 different ports on these boards and only had about a 40% success rate. Like I said, this is the second 850 Evo 1tb I have had and the other had the same problems. I'll punch this down to another DOA SSD as much as I don't want it to be, I'll try and sweet talk Newegg into another RMA after so much time has passed. That or just get a refund for what I paid and get something better (doubtful). Sorry to bother ya with this, for sure thought it was the mobo considering it worked on other computers, including mine, a few times before.
  4. Yea back when I first messed with this the AsMedia drivers were crap so I avoided them at all costs. I currently have it hooked up to the same "working" cables as I had my Vertex 3 120gb on, which was on one of the 2 red Intel controlled ports. Same cables and everything, I know for a fact they work since I've been using that Vertex 3 since I got it. And no don't have my CPU OCd due to this particular board having some terrible power delivery, it's out of warranty so can't send it in for anymore replacements for free. I have my 2 HDD's hooked up to the 2 SATA II black ports run by the Intel controller. EDIT: My first post has my CPU @ 4.5Ghz, I copy pasted that info from my PC specs back when I had a board that could OC. I'm running everything stock with this board though, sorry about the confusion.
  5. Sadly don't have an SSD to USB adapter, and don't feel like taking apart my "newer" external drives to use them for that purpose for obvious reasons. Samsung Magician doesn't detect it, and when it did before I was able to update the firmware thinking that was the problem, but again it wasn't.
  6. Issue | Getting a Samsung 850 Evo 1tb to register in the BIOS/Windows on a RIVE mobo with latest BIOS. So I should have asked this a long time ago honestly cause I have just had this drive sitting in my case not doing anything, figured an upgrade would help out later on. But with the upgrade to Windows 10, I figured I would help a friend out and give him one of my 120gb SSDs and just try the 1tb SSD again. I guess it wasn't meant to be, after plugging it in again it showed one time in the BIOS and I thought it would stick. But ever since then, it won't show up in any shape or form. I've tried changing BIOS changes to SATA devices, resetting power and SATA cables, changing ports for the drive, etc and it just will not register in the BIOS or the OS itself. I've already had to RMA this drive once to Newegg cause I thought it was faulty, I never thought to RMA it again so much later after the problems didn't change before. I've also had to RMA this mobo 3 times, I gave up trying to get a completely working RIVE after the last time (Mainly USB issues and false RAM BSODs). The system would hang (when it was actually detected), I would get random BSODs in Win 8.1, and on random resets it would stop showing up in the BIOS once again. So I decided to just unplug it and leave it be like I said before not thinking anything of it until I did the upgrade so I could give my Vertex 3 120gb drive to one of my friends. I've been working with computers for around 15 years and have never come across something like this, I'm at a complete loss for how to go about fixing this. Any suggestions from people who might of had the same problem, or know what might be going on? CPU :: 3930k @ 4.5Ghz Motherboard :: Rampage Extreme IV RAM :: 64Gb Corsair Vengeance GPU :: EVGA 980 GTX Storage :: 2x 120Gb SSDs | 2Tb Seagate | 4Tb WD (Trying to replace a 120gb SSD with the 1tb) PSU :: Corsair AX860 Sound :: SoundBlaster Z OS :: Windows 10 64bit
  7. Well I mainly use the system for gaming, but also work on websites, video editing, photo editing, and some level design/coding when I get the chance. So the extra cores and RAM obviously helps. And yea downgrading to consumer grade at this point is a no, especially considering my CPU right now can still outperform whats out there.
  8. Sorry was working on reformatting and updates and all that jazz. I appreciate the suggestions, thankfully I already have a H100i so don't need a cooler unless the mounting is different for some stupid reason. Is there any board (I'm usually ASUS) that is a little higher end than the X99-A by chance, or does it just go straight to the Deluxe? Also been keeping an eye on Skylake, you think it would be at all worth it to wait for that instead of going H-E? And yea for the moment I'm fine with my single 980, although Pascal is looking pretty nice from rumors.
  9. So I'm currently running this setup ASUS RAMPAGE IV EXTREME i7 3930k 32Gb DDR3 RAM EVGA GeForce 980 I've had so many problems with this mobo it isn't even funny, after 4 RMA's over the years I'm ready to turn in the towel and move on. I was currently looking at the 5930k, haven't checked out DDR4 RAM yet or a mobo for that matter. My problem with getting a new mobo is I NEED to make sure the SATA 6Gbs ports run off the Intel controller. Currently I have 2 128Gb SSD's using the 2 slots on my R4E, and a 1Tb SSD I got recently running off the garbage AsMedia controller. Also, I'm not entirely sure if it's my OS SSD (HyperX 3k 128Gb), but boot times have become horrid and I'm currently reformatting to see if it helps at all. Stalls in the OS, programs won't run, can't force close programs, etc etc. I've run benches on the drive and everything seems to be fine with it so I'm leaning more towards the OS honestly. Currently running 8.1, but getting Win10 as soon as I possibly can. Any help would be appreciated, I'm banging my head up against a wall right now trying to deal with the numerous problems I am having with my setup after 3+? years. Thanks in advance -RTCook
  10. Shameless Bump, still looking for more input
  11. Would the ASUS PB278Q be a good replacement for my monitors you think? I been reading that alot of people use them for gaming and production work, best all arounder on the market right now? Hard to shop for a monitor when I can't get out to see them because I'm disabled
  12. Acer XB270H | 1920x1080 | http://www.newegg.co...Item=24-009-657 ASUS ROG PG278Q | 2560x1440 | http://www.newegg.co...N82E16824236405 Those are my only 2 choices for G-Sync monitors, and I would be getting 2 of them. I don't know much about the Acer one, and the ASUS one isn't available sadly. I wish Acer would of done made that monitor just 24" mainly because of the resolution. 1080p 24" is the perfect spot for that res, anything higher and images and whatnot start to look weird imo. They are both TN as well, I would love to get a G-Sync monitor but I don't think there is enough on the market to warrant one just yet
  13. I was thinking about getting a true to color IPS panel but the Adobe CC work that I do doesn't warrant the cost sadly. It's more for personal use and designing graphics for websites/videos for friends, nothing serious. Will still keep those in mind though.
