Thanks WereCat. I was simply unaware of this, its my first foray into variable refresh rate tech and whilst I knew the desired outcome, the steps to get there were not clear. I did some more digging on the back of your comment and i came across and old reddit post with and AMD tech stating v-sync is the best way forward.

I have just built a PC and have a Strix RX480 card paired with an iiyama G-master blackhawk freesync display with a 75hz max refresh rate. I understand how freesync works etc but I was under the impression that reporting software like Rivatuner and FRAPS should show the FPS capping at the max refresh rate whist freesync is active. This is not the case for me, every game I've tried shows a higher frame rate (settings dependent of course) and more often than nopt they still have V-sync enabled in the settings. Im pretty sure at this point freesync is not active but on my monitors menu and in radeon software it shows as on. What gives? Re-boots haven't helps and i re-loaded the drivers with no luck, am i missing something or is it a reporting issue with the software OSD's? Any advice is appreciated.

Upgraded from console earlier this year and whilst im enjoying the games i have, some fo the multiplayer games are frustrating without pre-made groups. I mainly play at the weekend but play the occasional evening. If anyone plays any of the below and wants to add me, im a semi-competent adult player so let me know!
