I tried that originally, and I got annoyed using TrueNAS as a hypervisor. Spinning up VMs is clunky, the docker app store is nice but most of the apps I tried using through it broke and I needed to set them up manually anyway, and you don't really have as many other options as Proxmox does. I could live with that though (I still probably would've ditched bare metal TrueNAS eventually, but no where near as quickly as I did) if it weren't for one gigantic oversight by the TrueNAS folks: you aren't allowed to setup headless GPU passthrough. You get blocked at every stage when trying to do that, so if you're running say a 5900X and want to pass a P600 into a JellyFin VM for transcoding like I was, you're SOL unless you want to buy a second GPU for specifically TrueNAS that will do absolutely nothing but sit there. Since I had an HBA already that I could just pass straight into a TrueNAS VM, I figured why not, and I'd end up with the best of both worlds with the superior hypervisor of Proxmox and the superior NAS software that is TrueNAS.

Overhead is a thing, yes, though admittedly since I have so much extra CPU for what I'm doing that doesn't really become apparent outside of a few situations, so I don't really care. Only thing I might be a little worried about is RAM usage, since my system does idle at around 60GB used of 64GB, but then again it performs as expected so I don't really think it's necessary to upgrade that yet (that will change if I want to add something like a 4060 and have a Windows cloud gaming VM though).

It is packaged in Fedora Linux 39, I don't know about other distributions.

Strongly depends on what you do with the server. I have a home server (Debian) serving as a network share + Pi-hole (Docker) and it uses < 500 MB of RAM.

If you want it more act like hypervisor, Proxmox is the best free option out there, also if you want to run it as a NAS, you can run it inside Proxmox virtual machine and ask yourself this for the VM OS: You want easy option but cost little bit money? unraid is good option. Got the feeling of learning more and getting good drivers support? get TrueNAS SCALE

Also, please bear in mind, both Ryzen 1000 and 2000 (Zen and Zen+) plagued by C6 power state bug in linux and BSD, please install appropriate patch to circumvent the issue, or better yet, get Ryzen 9 3900 dirt cheap on aliexpress for just $130, best performing 12 cores 24 threads CPU for it's ridiculous price.

The GPU situation is pretty tricky, if you want to run system that require GPU power, for example, Media server like plex or Jellyfin (need GPU for video Transcode), running GPGPU task or running AI instance, you better sold your GTX 970 and get pascal card like GTX 1070, or for cheaper but doesn't have video output (but have less power), Tesla P4, you need other GPU for KVM and troubleshooting tho, but most ryzen motherboard allow you to run without GPU after you finish installing your OS and setup SSH server in it.

For RAM, add more 8GB in it, 16GB is almost a bare minimum for good home server, especially when you use desktop hardware.

Forgot for networking, you can buy 2.5GBe adapter later (highly recommended), Intel chips like i225/i226v is recommended, but realtek one wouldn't hurt if you just running it for homelab use. If you want 10GBe/SFP, please bear in mind, DO NOT BUY INTEL X540 series network controller, it's old, its sucking too much power and hot, you need atleast PCIe x4 slot for full bandwidth (since its running on PCIe gen 2 speed), and most of the time, the "NEW" one is using lower quality, often reject chips remanufactured by chinese company. Just get either X710 series or AQC based NIC.

Personally I have not messed around with any other distros yet. Debian I did a little bit but when I had better luck with Ubuntu I stuck with that for now. The hardest part is going to be getting a functioning kernel to boot using the gumboot bootloader.

I've compiled a few myself but all of them over kernel version 4 has led to the screen turning green with a hard console lockup. Would like to eventually post the kernel code on GitHub so anyone who has any ideas can help, Cause I am for sure no pro.

HeroRareheart reacted to Brady AKA MrHoot2000 in MacOS will get window snapping in 2 years - here's why.
I have always been curious about why Macs don't have window snapping, but then I found out that Microsoft PATENTED window snapping back in 2005. HOWEVER patents only last 20 years, so if Apple is smart, window snapping should come to Macs in 2025.

HeroRareheart reacted to Zando_ in MacOS will get window snapping in 2 years - here's why.
Linux distros have window snapping. You can pay for an app (I did, it was like $5 one-time) to add window snapping to macOS. If it were patented in a way that Apple couldn't implement it, I dunno how other operating systems or paid apps would get away with it. I think Apple just doesn't want to add window snapping, so they haven't.

Nevermind I did it this evening, at the fourth attempt 🥵 I found the trick being erasing the disk before launching the MacOS installation and expect multiple reboots, each with neverending loading bars with absolutely no explanation of what is happening

IMHO the OpenCore Legacy Patcher tutorial/walkthrough misses some important steps, that may be obvious for somone used to do this regularly, but for me, this is my first Mac 😂

The "About this Mac" window is so silly, how come that they even have the correct image? Amazing

I found a security vulnerability in Oppo, Xiaomi, Lg and RealMi phones that allows you to bypass google protections and install any app quietly if the phone is connected to a computer via USB, no installation promt is showed, no virus scan is done, simply just connect the phone to an infected computer then BAM your phone is infected.

More details at this reddit post I made last night:

HeroRareheart reacted to Bigsmiles in How do I troubleshoot my wifi card?
Update: I ended up contacting microsoft support and they were very helpful (to my surprise?)

they conected remotely and ran a couple console commands
net localgroup Administrators localservice /add fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\ netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt netsh winhttp reset proxy netsh winsock reset Ipconfig /flushdns Ipconfig /release Ipconfig /renew Netsh winsock reset Netsh int ip reset Netsh advfirewall reset Ipconfig /flushdns Netsh winhttp reset proxy and performed a network reset, but after all of that failed they asked me to perform a "Power flush", by disconecting the power cable from the laptop and pressing the power button for 30 seconds and that fixed the problem
(I'm honestly kindof offended that the solution was a fancy way of turning it off and on again)

When troubleshooting it's best to start with simple solutions and work your way up, so start with this. Connect the laptop to the internet in another manner, such as with a USB wi-fi dongle or even better a wired connection, and run Windows update. Be sure to check the "optional updates" section for extra drivers.

Your MacBook will be no different from any other PC Compatible laptop if you install Linux on it. None of Apple's seamless integration secret sauce will work perfectly, if at all. And as far as I'm aware there's no equivalent to WINE that will make macOS software run on Linux, so if you use any software that isn't cross-platform you'll have to dual boot or find an alternative.

Switching to Linux also won't make web browsing any lighter.

Check out OpenCore Legacy Patcher. That should keep macOS running on that machine until Apple completely drops support for the x86 architecture.

Solution for the people coming here in the future:

Special thanks to u/New_Avocado_2315 on r/linuxmasterrace for their initial hint. This all started because I had a bad xorg.conf file, and likely I would stay with that because I am getting a new GPU which will replace my primary GT 1030 with the HD 6450 that is the secondary now. That will mean that I have a full nvidia system, and the xorg.conf will generate itself automatically when the system starts.

The problem was caused because of a HDD connected to the PC at that time. I had cloned that HDD into my SSD when I upgraded to it, the reason why I connected it back to the system was because the xorg.conf there was working fine (this broke because there was a time that I changed my primary GPU to my brother's 980Ti) and when I came back it broke. Something about the way how both drives (almost identical) were setup caused the system to perform such anomalies. Which I do understand. I just removed the drive, and I will later copy the xorg.conf file when I have time (without the SSD plugged in). It was already too much for today.

Thanks for the effort to everyone. I really enjoyed parts of this process and remember Documentation is key. We shall make the future see this!

When stuff this bad happens I often find myself spending WAY more time troubleshooting then it would be to throw my hands up and start over. IMO the best use of your time is to reinstall and hope it doesn't happen again. It could be a one off issue so if it DOES happen again THEN learn how the fix it.

Mint is great, but for newer hardware with things like gaming it isn't the best because the kernel is pretty old.

Works great on my laptop tho, idles at around 2-3% CPU usage and barely consumes battery life
