You're putting out content that some people are going to use for large purchases. If your reviews are inaccurate, then they have much less value.

You need to be thorough and accurate, especially in benchmarks.

When errors are found, there needs to be an injection of voiceover during post.

All that energy, and money, you're pumping into the labs project is going to be for naught if your accuracy isn't there.

Start slowing down on the content, and do more checking. Steve raised a lot of valid points, I think you should look internally at processes to improve everything.

Specifically responding to this and while I don't expect a reply, this just is an excuse to me.

How many times have you done something extreme just for the sake of doing it? Or because you wanted the absolute best price be damned?

You shouldn't have accepted the review if you weren't going to at least commit to doing it right. If you weren't comfortable with the expense of doing it right, then you should have declined.

Data issues aside; @LinusTech Regarding the Billet Labs situation, could you please publicly state and justify the monetary compensation paid out to Billet Labs for the “loss” of their prototype? What steps are you taking to prevent such issues in the future?

I see a lot of comments are upset that Steve took this public however I agree with his choice. A lot of you dedicated folks will follow LTT on every possible platform, their yt coummnity page etc. Don't forget that there is a very large audience out there that plays these videos as "2nd monitor content". We don't have the time to go back and check if what they said was actually correct, monitor community and forum pages for video corrections etc. and LTT has clearly shown that they will not post videos like "Here's what we got wrong this month".  I didn't even notice half of the mistakes and corrections that Steve showed and damn that's a lot. Personally no matter the outcome of this I'll still be an ltt viewer because I learn a lot from the content and it's really enjoyable to watch but this video from Steve has shown with proof from LTT's own posts and corrections just how much inaccuracies their videos contain so it's increased the level of skepticism that I have when watching LTT videos, which I think is one of Steve's goals with this videos apart from it being a call to action for LTT.

The most important issue I'm watching to see how they handle is the Billet Labs situation as that is massively f*ed up. Given the size of the company I can see how it could happen without malice but that still doesn't excuse such a massive blunder and it needs to be rectified immediately.

Edit: If anyone from LTT reads this comment I'd recommend that in the future, once per month at least to go over that months content, check for errors, and then make that process itself content by uploading them in a separate video. This way it makes sense to pay someone to specifically check for errors (a job made much easier post posting the video 😄 as there's often community feedback on videos) and you have a chance to also make some more money from the correction video.

All the people saying that Steve should have notified Linus privately about his issues instead of posting a video:

The reason to post the video is to hold LTT/LMG publicly accountable for all the mistakes and issues that are presented in said video. Otherwise all these issues can be swept under the rug with nary another person being aware of the issues presented.

I find some of Steve's points not that troubling, like the private framework investment or the past workplaces of some employees.

But the Billet Labs situation makes me speechless. So many bad takes and then selling the prototype. WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK LMG?
In WAN we get all the talk about how hard product design is. How small creators are affected by YouTube decisions or by react content. But when it is in LMG's hand you don't seem to be any better.

I also stopped watching ShortCircut some weeks ago, because I felt like the content was just useless. It is to long and has to many opinions for an unboxing but is not accurate enough to be review. I also felt misled with a ShortCirut representation of a product, after buing it myself.

I was already disappointed by the "Trust me Bro" shitshow. Even if Linus is now publicly stating that this wasn't a great move, there is still no heartfelt apology.
So, I will again hope for the best but only expect a “RIP Billet Labs” t-shirt on WAN show. Which is kind of sad. ☹

What in the video is going to be "debunked" at some point? Steve came with receipts. He didn't say anything where he didn't have a screenshot or clip to back it up.

About the only thing that I could see being "debunked" is what happened with the waterblock that was sold at auction at LTX. Maybe there is an alternative explanation for what happened there and the public is missing some important details that happened behind the scenes. But other than that, LTT did make the mistakes Steve pointed out - I remember almost all of them, and for a few the videos are still up in their original state. Linus did say all of the things that Steve pointed out - I remember some of those as well, and the respective WAN Shows where they happened should still be available for viewing.

What is there to "debunk" in the video? You can disagree with the severity of the issues, but I don't see anything that will later be shown to be factually incorrect. (Except perhaps that aforementioned auction situation)

GN did actually offer returns, even after months, to anyone affected.

Here's GN's response to that issue - I started the video where they explain the situation.
    1. They immediately marked the mat as "Out of Stock" so that no on else would buy them.
    2. They attempted to find a means to fix the issue by correcting the mats and failed to find one.
    3. They created pinout cards to send to affected customers, which include not only the correction, but additional pinout info. They also made metal pins featuring the corrected pinout. Anyone affected was sent an email where they could get a kit featuring these. Anyone who didn't want a kit was allowed to return the mod mat for a refund instead.
    4. They did then decide to sell the remaining mod mats, however, with the full correction kit, and with complete transparency on their website about what you were getting.

If you want to say something negative about Apple or Microsoft, you do it publicly in a review, not try to privately call Tim Cook or Satya Nadella to tell them about your concerns. Why LMG should be treated any differently? They are a big corporation with big profits and a big impact on the industry, not a bunch of goofy YouTubers making silly videos

First of all, the whole Billet Labs stuff is completely absurd if true. I don't think they would intentionally sell something they couldn't, probably some massive fuck up in communications happened between the team responsible for sending it back and the people choosing the items to be auctioned, but it's still a huge issue and 100% LTT's responsibility to fix it and make sure something like this never ever happens again.

About the rushed content, it's something that a lot of times crosses the border of "fun jank" to being just frustrating. Every single project they do seems to be rushed, unfinished, untested and plagued with issues and oversights. And that could be their content "brand", seems like many people enjoy the jank. But if they now want to present themselves as serious testers, someone the community can look up for reliable data with Labs, that mindset needs to change, FAST. How the hell can I trust someone who has to correct themselves almost every video? And makes errors that a basic review of the content could catch?

You need to pump out 7 videos a week? Sure buddy, but maybe allow more time sensitive projects to be properly planned, executed and reviewed and throw some "here's 10 fun crap we found on aliexpress" videos to make up for it.

Tataffe reacted to wanderingfool2 in Norton Lifelock password manager hacked. They just sent out official notice this week. They first detected signs of a hacking attempt in December.
To everyone reading just this thread and not the article, take a deep breath in and exhale.  It's an exaggeration of what happened to really say LifeLock was hacked.  We really need to start having different non-techy words to refer to "hacks" as the title is super misleading and super disingenuous to what is claimed to have happened.

Norton mentioned that some accounts were compromised via credential stuffing.  i.e. The people who got their accounts compromised were the people who reused their passwords.

@Uttamattamakin try to read the article and understand what has happened before shouting to the world that the sky is falling; as all you did was make it seem as though Norton itself was compromised and as though everyone's passwords are now immediately available when in reality people reused their passwords and used the same one with a password manager.  Under the same concept, I could try claiming Outlook was hacked, or any sites was hacked (as many of those sites see credential stuffing happening every day).  The only difference is that Norton reported this as there was a surge with someone attempting it to access the accounts.  Even your article mentioned only 6,450 users were affected by this.

    Quote from Norton

Essentially, if you were foolish enough to use a password in multiple places and you used the same password for the utility that stores all of your passwords then you might have been compromised.  If you didn't reuse a password for the password that protects all your other passwords then you are probably okay.

So I'll repeat this is bold so that everyone can easily see this.  Norton LifeLock does NOT appear to be hacked, accounts were compromised because people used their password that protects their password on other sites as well

It's a massively click-bait title and summary of what happened.  The service is still secure apparently, it's just people reused their login credentials.  There's no way to really prevent against user error. To put this in perspective, they apparently had 500 million accounts...they sent out 6450 notices of compromise to accounts that were accessed.

If lets say you used 2FA, you were not compromised, if you had an unique password (which you should) to access a list of passwords then you shouldn't be compromised.

Me looking at my Galaxy A5 2017 that hasn't gotten a security patch since... last year. Or my workplaces fleet of Galaxy S8/S9s that have been forcefully disabled on our network due to not receiving updates. Again... are we going to address that or just keep beating the dead horse of "Apple bad"? I'm just saying. There are far more unsecured Android handsets out in the wild and yet that always get brushed under the rug because of this ongoing narrative.

    Edit:
And don't get me started on ChromeBooks and ChromeBoxes. For what is supposedly an extremely lightweight OS that is essentially just a Chrome browser... there is literally no excuse for those to be out of support after 4 years. It's a bloody web-browser. It's not like the same core hardware within these devices aren't running Windows or Linux somewhere else which supports the latest version of Chrome.

Apple typicly will update os versions of devices that cant be updated for many years for sec updates. The os versions they do not provide sec updates for are os versions were every device that can run that os version is also able to run a newer version that does have the sec update.    Its not uncommon for there to be multiple year long spans of os versions were every single device can be upgrade.

for example iOS 12 continues to get sec updates but there are no sec updates for 13, 14 as every device that runs 13 also runs 14 and also runs 15.  That is what this document is saying... if you device supports a newer os version apple is not going to ship sec updates to your current os version you need to update your os to the newerest version it supports to get the sec updates.

Tataffe reacted to leadeater in Base model Apple M2 MacBook Pro SSD Up To 50% slower than M1 MacBook Pro SSD | Half the NAND chips, half the speed
I'm not so sure skimping is the right label and way to frame that. Apple updated to the latest NAND packages that are more dense, yes that means less packages required so will reduce the performance per capacity, mostly on the lower end, but it's realistically a necessary step at some point. NAND makers aren't going to make everything forever so supply availability and also standardization is a thing and important too.

Maybe just not offering a 256GB option would have been the better move, not sure how well that would have played out affordability though.

All models will be using the updated NAND, there's a break point where the controller and also I/O stack achieve optimal performance capability, 256GB just isn't large enough capacity i.e. not enough NAND packages to achieve that.

Per package the performance is higher on these newer more dense packages, if thoroughly tested the new M2 512GB should show a small increase in SSD performance compared to M1 256GB as these should be equivalent in NAND package count.

I dunno, just don't buy 256GB anymore, that capacity won't be relevant forever 🤷‍♂️

Yea only in benchmarks, doubt anybody at all will notice in every day usage. Where it might matter you'd be highly unlikely using a 256GB model Mac....

Then it shouldn't have been released.  There really isn't much justification behind pushing out a broken product...maybe they wanted to hit their numbers...but that is still a very poor reason to push a product that was in a state that Windows 11 was/is in.

I'm glad that this is "fixed", but this should have been a day one fix.  I agree with @leadeater it seems as though their motives weren't really aligned with fixing, and that it never should have been a problem.  Even months prior to the release of Windows 11 there was the concern about this and uproar from the browser makers.  This kind of thing is something that should have been a lot higher priority as setting file associations in one giant lump is decently common.

I'm betting the state of Windows 11 alone is starting to push more people towards using Linux...even I'm tempted to start moving towards that direction after seeing the state that Windows 11 was launched in (and the willingness to release half-completed features for the sake of releasing something on time)

Well - it's not a major surprise to me with the concerns of ARM being under nvidia wings... so that to me makes sense... I would assume this also have some kind of impact in the long run with ARM not being under nvidia, we all know the saying "it will keep the way it is.... nothing going to change" well that might be true for the first couple of years... but IF the deal would be excuted what would that look like in the long 10-15 year run for consumers? not good i think, i personally think this is for the better for the consumer.
