I see this exact thing to. Windows works fine 99% of the time for me but some people just ALWAYS seem to have an avalanche of problems with Windows that I've never even heard of before. It's like some kind of tech curse...

That was able to help, in combination with additional steps I have taken such as reformatting the USB flash drive containing the latest Ubuntu ISO, using Rufus, to root out potential problems in Ubuntu install. I checked then flushed out any previous Ubuntu UEFI boot options prior to installing the OS again with efibootmgr.

I was able to wipe the disk containing the failed Ubuntu paritition and set up a new GPT.

With all of that combined, I was able to install and boot Ubuntu while in RST RAID. Got it working and managed to log in with control of the disk. The blank 1TB drive is also detectable, but will not format and mount it until I learn more about KVM and how to use it.

Or in Newegg's case, Black November. The lack of sales tax helps in keeping total costs reasonable. (didn't use Newegg for the CPU, 500GB SSD, and some others, and instead went to Micro Center, just because I just happen to get things on the fly, including some tools like antistatic mat + wrist on clearance sale, and driver bits for the small screws.)

Got a 240gb version for my father in February, and it's nice. It does get quite hot though, so active cooling or copper shims would be nice.

I built my PC in November 2016, so even if I am excited for Ryzen, I don't have the opportunity anymore.

Even though I have a non-K Intel i7 in my build, my gaming GPU is RX480, and plan to have an AMD workstation GPU.

Easy of use will always trump something that requires more setup on the end user's part.  People like being lazy; it is the whole reason why people will pay for convenience.

What I would be more interested in is the motherboards that support it. If I'm going to have Ryzen in my future build, I'm going to put as much watercooling in the system as possible and practice overclocking and heat management, which I could apply when thinking about extreme performance potential.

Forget having a cool sports car to show off; I'd rather have a desktop that concentrates server performance into an ATX case and implement virtualization for family/business use.

    1. Don't virtualize the gaming OS, do that directly on the hardware and use that OS to run the VMs. Use the Hyper-V role of Windows, not in Windows 7 however.

    2. If you want to test out gaming on the linux OS then I would say yes use a dedicated disk or partition for it.

    3. Use an SSD to host VMs and their virtual system drive. You can place virtual data drives on an HDD e.g. VM C: on SSD and D: on HDD. HDDs are really bad at running multiple VMs and will quickly start to show performance issues as you run more than 2.

To be fair, I am planning to put this computer into diverse purposes in the future, including content creation and near-full spectrum game development. That is where the workstation graphics card comes in once my development projects start to become a problem for the RX 480. I cannot afford a Titan X for play and development as the price is equivalent of all of my components listed. 32 GB may not mean much, but longevity becomes a factor when planning to keep this build for a long while. I would not put it in someone else's build plan unless they are working on something very memory intensive.

HGST is one of the lesser known, but profoundly reliable HDD brands out there... though I have taken note of the researched hardware differences between desktop and NAS drives, especially when I am putting them in RAID 1. Never knew my Lenovo lappy had a HGST 500GB hard drive for a few years.

And I am also a student in the IT field, so some professional programs might end up in this PC, too.

As I pointed out, using either WD Blue, WD Black or WD Red would all work for basic storage in a RAID1 configuration.

As for the RAID1 option, If one of the drives fails you should still be able to access your data, but it is recommended to replace the failed drive so the RAID can rebuild itself. If a drive fails you won't be able to get the other drive to a different port or a different computer to get your data. Simply put: you are stuck using that drive solely on that system and on that SATA port. It does, however, provide with instant copying of the data on the other drive and you won't have to use any software or wait for a backup to complete to have your data secure. In case you are doing something important and something happens to your drive, with a simple backup to another drive you will have all the information up to the point of the last backup. All changes and new data from that point to the point of failure will be lost. You can use a backup application to move the data to the other drive in the system and thus be able to swap PCs and ports, but mind that if you use a backup application to another drive in the same system this won't be a true backup as you are still prone to system failure, power outage, malware attacks and other factors that could damage your data regardless of your copies.

I'd say you should simply stick with backing up your most important data to external drives.

spent a while putting that together. it exceeds your 1k budget request, but you said you don't mind about 500 more (only spend 250 more). I don't know to what scope you intend to do these professional applications, but this computer should do a pretty darn good job of them all.

the suggested cryorig H7 is more than enough to let the 6700 run at 4 GHz all day every day if it wants to.

Also if you're not building for a while, the new Kaby Lake CPU's should be coming out sometime in late Q3 or early Q4. and AMD's Zen in Q4 2016-Q1 2017. Depending on how long you're waiting, it might be worth looking at those as well.

I agree, but it's not in the cards if you want everything else you mentioned. a 4 core with 8 threads at 4GHz is alot. If you want a 6core, you have to go X99 (with the exception of Xeon's, but i don't know much about them), and in order to really get the full mileage out of your X99, you're going to need to overclock it and cool it well. things you said you didn't want to do. Not to mention you're going to  have to get a big case to house all the things you need. All of this isn't going to come cheap, and will use all of your 1000 dollar budget and your 500 extra buffer. BUT if you want to do that, you could get this build. I also spent an extra 30 bucks to make it all colour coordinated (20 for matching ram, instead of ugly green ram, and 10 on the white version of the case instead of the black or green one)

Other than that the only way to save money on this build is to downgrade or remove components. Its up to you if you want to do that and which ones you cut out. But if you really want a solid productivity rig, and a 6 core CPU, this is probably your best bet (although i'm not familiar with whatever Xeons can bring to the table in this bracket)

As a side note, you should be able to get this chip to 4.2-4.4 GHz range fairly easily on this cooler/motherboard. if you don't mind investing a bit more to get a really big air cooler or a good AIO cooler, you could potentially get a bit more. but even 6 cores/12 threads at anywhere near 4 GHz should be pretty solid.
