soldier_ph reacted to Senzelian in German automotive club ADAC warns against retractable door handles
    Summary

The German automotive club ADAC (Algemeiner Deutscher Automobil Club) warns against retractable door handles, as they can be a safety risk to those trapped in a car due to an accident.

In order to quickly rescue people from an accident vehicle, it is important for first responders to be able to open a vehicle from the outside quickly, easily and intuitively. Even more so if there is a vehicle fire. From the ADAC's point of view, retractable door handles, i.e. those that retract flush into the side of the car when parking and driving, could make this task significantly more difficult, especially for laypeople. But even professional rescue workers would take longer to get to the occupants.

I'm completely with ADAC on this one. These things suck! Not only are they a pain to use compared to regular door handles, but they also are a major safety risk that is seemingly ignored by authorities. Not only can they fail and stop working, it's also not very intuitive to know where the emergency release is located and how some of them operate. If I would find a person stuck in a Tesla, BMW, Mercedes or any other car with such door handles, I would not know how to get the door open, if they stopped working or are still retracted.

    Summary

Intel shares fell 4% at one point in extended trading Tuesday after the company revealed long-awaited financials for its semiconductor manufacturing business, commonly called the foundry business, in an SEC filing. Intel said its foundry business recorded an operating loss of $7 billion in 2023 on sales of $18.9 billion. That’s a wider loss than the $5.2 billion Intel reported in its foundry business in 2022 on $27.5 billion in sales.

My current main computer! No RGB except on the motherboard (when I was buying my first round of parts, the RGB version cost less than similar boards without RGB), nearly all fans are Noctua fans. Started in December 2022.

    AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
    Corsair DDR4 3600 (4x16GB, 18-22-22-42 timing)
    RTX 3080 10GB (Noctua Edition)

The internal storage is all SSDs, with both NVMe/M.2 slots used, but I don't recall the specs. The new drives are mostly Samsung ("Pro"?) and I have some OCZ drives from a previous build in there. The screwdrivers and Lego minifigure were added for the photo, but I keep the Lego scaffolding in there to hold up that chonker of a graphics card.

It is probably too soon to know what effects this will have on the tech sector.  Thankfully this 7.5 magnitude quake hit Taiwan which has high building standards and an economy that can meet those standards in practice. The buildings being strong enough to not totally collapse likely saved a great many lives.  Compare to the Quake which greatly damaged Por Au Prince Haiti some time ago which was about the same magnitude.  Well-built modern structures stood but a great many did not live in such structures.

Vibration and shaking is probably not good for precision Manufacuring equipment or for things that were in production at that moment.   This likely won't be some big systemic effect.  I really hope it won't be.  I would not be surprised if there weren't some defective parts in the supply chain for a while.

    Ugh.
In 2022 iirc I signed up for the government's food programme, I said it's not much but oh well at least I'll get something in return for all the taxes (nothing's free), thing is they don't hand out stamps or coupons to exchange for food in stores but give you the food directly, that's the bad part, it came in 2 boxes so I couldn't really see what was inside until I got home and unpacked. Bottled water that was fine, seed oil we don't use but at least I can trade for something else, canned legumes and beans... the rice tho, it was like that, no, worse even, you could see the bugs having a full blown rave inside the bag, they had wings though so my best guess is grain moths, there was also this pack of corkscrew pasta, the flat ones not the twisty mac, I dunno ask some Italian for the name, thing is it was also full of bugs that looked like tiny roaches, oh and the bottom of the box had dead big roaches too. Even though some of the other stuff was fine I didn't go back for more and missed all the calls from the programme on purpose, mfs thought the "eat ze bugs" shitpost was real.
