soldier_ph reacted to Cela1 in Zenfone user wins court case against ASUS for failing to provide bootloader unlock
    Summary
A Zenfone user in the UK filed a small claims court case against ASUS for failing to provide bootloader unlock tools as they had previously promised.
ASUS has settled case with the user, who received payment covering the phones original cost (£700) and the court filing fee (£70)

I'm glad somebody has finally called out phone manufacturers over broken promises and 'won'.
If any of you are in the UK and have a bootloader locked Zenfone then this is certainly an option

    My thoughts
Given that it's direct competitor in the market, Rogers, has a 1 year expiry, Telus has 90 days, why is there an expiry at all? So the ISP can free up disk space? So they can force their users to watch the VOD version of the same show they don't have all the episodes to? To force people to watch Netflix or CraveTV if they want to watch the entire series?

Like I've long since complained about Telus's complete incompetence about having any shows on their VOD service. You might click a TV show and you might have the most recent episode and one episode from 2 years ago, and nothing else. The ISP's VOD services are absolutely worthless because they want you to pay for CraveTV, because they directly profit from that.

Given that ISP's no longer even offer local PVR's and you can't buy PVR's that hook up to HDMI (legitimately) is this yet another attempt and destroying media?

Oh lmao, LMG can't catch a break from doing f*ck ups it seems. This one is pretty bad too.

If you can't stop yourself from making way too inappropriate Sex Jokes then just stop making them altogether. You'll just end up looking way less professional then you already are and piss off your audience even more.

Maybe get inspired by the Hardware News Episodes from GN. They're very well made, straight to the point, no annoying Background Music and if there are Jokes then Steve presents them in a tasteful and relatable way. Without making it seem inappropriate.

Nearly 20 years after the debut of LiMux, the project where the city of Munich, as well as Lower Saxony, migrated the majority of their computer systems from Microsoft Windows to a custom Linux distribution before being cancelled in 2017, someone else is now ready to take on the challenge. This time, it's the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Citing the goals of independence, sustainability, and security, the state is planning on migrating its 30,000 computers to Linux and other open source software.

Cables. Since I got the Kemper amp, I only used it with headphones. I look forward to rip apart my desk, redo all the cable management and put these cable in there as well. The speaker cable goes from the Kemper to my 4x12 cabinet and the XLR cables go from the Kemper to my audio interface. I'll mostly record the guitar through those XLR cables, but maybe I'll try to record from the cab with my mics sometime too. Honestly though, I just want to jam out on the Kemper with my cab, I like that better than through headphones.

Roku has filed a patent for a system to display ads on the TV screen when a pause has been detected from the HDMI output. It could even detect what kind of content is being outputted so it can serve the user more targeted adds

I can see uses in the technology to detect pauses in the HDMI output, like turning of the TV after a few minutes to save power or to show a screensaver to prevent burn-in on OLED TVs. It is kinda sad that even when you just want to pause something on the TV Roku immediately whant to shove ads down your throat.

So I won't paste excerpt here because of its nature. But my timestamp starts with what it fine (to me). Its very old joke and tied in part to American higher end lifestyle of 90s and early 00s. Also portrayed in media of that era. Its also bit poor taste, but not worst and probably would have been fine (since its about lying/cheating and nothing beyond that). But latter part of that joke goes over, talking about intoxication and what men supposedly do when that happens. With the wording making it sound like what happens does happen regardless of the other person agreeing.

While it might read out like that to all, being intoxicated has been very commonly used as excuse by men when they are investigated for sexual abuse during parties. You can search up some notable cases, some of them are too political to discuss here.

    Summary

The German automotive club ADAC (Algemeiner Deutscher Automobil Club) warns against retractable door handles, as they can be a safety risk to those trapped in a car due to an accident.

In order to quickly rescue people from an accident vehicle, it is important for first responders to be able to open a vehicle from the outside quickly, easily and intuitively. Even more so if there is a vehicle fire. From the ADAC's point of view, retractable door handles, i.e. those that retract flush into the side of the car when parking and driving, could make this task significantly more difficult, especially for laypeople. But even professional rescue workers would take longer to get to the occupants.

I'm completely with ADAC on this one. These things suck! Not only are they a pain to use compared to regular door handles, but they also are a major safety risk that is seemingly ignored by authorities. Not only can they fail and stop working, it's also not very intuitive to know where the emergency release is located and how some of them operate. If I would find a person stuck in a Tesla, BMW, Mercedes or any other car with such door handles, I would not know how to get the door open, if they stopped working or are still retracted.

The new drives are mostly Samsung ("Pro"?) and I have some OCZ drives from a previous build in there. It is probably too soon to know what effects this will have on the tech sector.  Thankfully this 7.5 magnitude quake hit Taiwan which has high building standards and an economy that can meet those standards in practice. The buildings being strong enough to not totally collapse likely saved a great many lives.  Compare to the Quake which greatly damaged Por Au Prince Haiti some time ago which was about the same magnitude.  Well-built modern structures stood but a great many did not live in such structures.

Vibration and shaking is probably not good for precision Manufacuring equipment or for things that were in production at that moment.   This likely won't be some big systemic effect.  I really hope it won't be.  I would not be surprised if there weren't some defective parts in the supply chain for a while.
