New door mat for my new flat.

I know the flooring looks a bit scruffy but the stairs and landing are going to be carpeted so it'll be ok.  Hoping to have laminate in the bedroom and living room.

Also paid for a huge 2000mm x 750mm computer desk.  It's second hand but looks neat enough and has hollow legs with a massive cable catcher along the whole length for cable management  £15 for the desk and £30 to have it delivered and brought upstairs for me.  Something like that new would easily be £250+ before you got to delivery.  Should be able to fit both my main shooter and my retro PC on that

A couple of games from the Steam sales. I already have hundreds of unplayed games in my library, but a lot of them are from bundles and I don't particularly care to play most of them. These I intend to actually play and they're already installed so I'm reminded to actually do that. Since I've been replaying Half-Life 2 and its episodes, I'm particularly excited for Alyx.

You do know that there are Ryzen processors on the AM4 socket that have integrated graphics and would be a lot cheaper then intel offerings.

Examples taken from current prices on CCLonline.com.

    AMD Ryzen 3 4300G £73.99
    intel core i3 13100 £134.99

Heck, you can get an R5 5600G and still be saving money over the intel i3.

soldier_ph reacted to LogicalDrm in How does LMG/LTT contribute to charity?
Linus works with Make-a-Wish, both with LMG (tours and hardware) and personally (building with a fan). In past, company has participated in several public fundraising efforts. For example planting trees with MrBeast, collecting plastic from oceans with Mark Rober and 3D printing visors for BC hospitals during COVID-19 first spring.

Monetary donations to charities are usually tax deductables, so most likely are a thing for the company also. However, since it's private company, they don't have any needs to declare such publicly.

Noting publicity about various charity efforts is Two-sided sword. On one hand your social score rises in eyes of some. But at the same time greed and jealousy will be a thing ("why them and not us"). This has been seen with any bigger giveaway done locally. It will also bring hoards of beggars around. Hence why we don't allow such on forums. It's faster and easier for Linus/LMG to coordinate with established foundation like Make-a-Wish who can vet those in need to be eligible prior to making needed connections and time/money allocations.

My buddy was a pot smoker (and cigs too) around the rig I built for him. I went to visit him a couple of years later and he said the computer was shutting down when he would play Starcraft 2. I took a look inside and found this sticky mess of cat fur, dust and smoke resin. It took two bottles of isopropal alcohol to clean it properly.

Yes, it's just as bad as smoking tobacco in the same room as your PC. Honestly I wouldn't recommend you smoke any combustible materials indoors at all, as the buildup of gunk that happens on everything the smoke clings to can make it harder to sell stuff later on (there's a reason "smoke free home" is commonly mentioned in second hand listings), and can decrease the value of your home if you decide to move out. If smoking outside is an option for you, outside is the only place you should smoke. If it isn't an option, get a THC vape instead and avoid exhaling near your PC's intake fans, the negative effects of vaping indoors are far less of an issue to deal with.

edit, the fork is uncut, with the spacers the head tube is just that fuckin tall
you are supposed to cut the fork, you get an excessively long steerer tube because it’s meant to be cut, this build as is leaves the tube uncut because it’s just so god damn tall

why go to an outdated and questionably secure OS (especially if you hate MS that much)? if you dont want to go W10 or W11, just go to Linux.

soldier_ph reacted to WillyW in Security researchers detail a 4 year ongoing exploit of iPhone and all Apple Devices
    Summary
Kaspersky Labs detailed an attack chain that affected Apple devices mostly iPhones that was on-going for four years before it was shut down by patches, but jailbroken iOS devices remain vulnerable. The alleged originator of this is the NSA as per the Russian Gov't without supporting evidence. One of the vulnerabilities, CVE-2023-41990, was a vulnerability in Apple’s implementation of the TrueType font which had existed since the 90s. The detail of how the attack chain achieves infection is presented in the video and is quite complicated and sophisticated, but in brief it takes advantage of several previously undocumented features/vulnerabilities and attempts to hide itself from detection by sophisticated means and is quite long and complicated. Once infected the malware extracts users data including pictures but in order to reduce bandwidth it makes use of the Apple Silicon's own machine learning features to perform image recognition on photos. The initial attack vector is undetectable by the user, and requires only the phone number of the victim.

    My thoughts
This is a report from Kaspersky which is a Russian security research agency with alleged Russia gov't connections, but regardless well documented. With all the advertising from Apple about how secure and privacy focused their devices are you have to wonder if they know they have a culture problem. The four vulnerabilities have previously been reported and patched (CVE-2023-32434, CVE-2023-32435, CVE-2023-38606, CVE-2023-41990) but what is new here is a detailed account of what they did and who they were targeting. The article mentions "Besides affecting iPhones, these critical zero-days and the secret hardware function resided in Macs, iPods, iPads, Apple TVs, and Apple Watches." What this brings home is a number of things, first when you are in a closed ecosystem you make yourself more vulnerable to hacks that work on all devices, and that you really should not be using devices that are no longer supported. It is likely that if this was the NSA they have other ways in, and have already moved on, but now that the vulnerabilities and the attack method is detailed that it becomes that much more easy for others to exploit these vulnerabilities. Also, the fact that users do not notice hacks occurring does not mean that they are secure from them or that they haven't already been compromised, as mentioned in the Q&A portion of the video below there is no way for the user to know they are or have been infected without taking deliberate steps to determine i.e. check logs or take backup an analyze with a tool. At my work we train users monthly on threats and despite all this we still have users clicking on things they shouldn't and despite our training we still have people trying to hide when they have.

i mean.. sounds like a pretty solid source for unveiling a security flaw in a US based manufacturer with alledged US gov't connections?

they probably have some motivations to make this vulnerability seem like some major government ploy, but i honestly dont care about how the security hole got there, i just care about it getting fixed.

An iPhone 4s that still has iOS 6 installed

What Apple did to the 4S is unforgivable and should be brought up any time people start talking about updating their operating systems in any context. They forced updates to these phones to make them obsolete, running iOS 8 or 9 on an iPhone 4s leaves them almost unusable, entirely unstable, and unreliable. If there was a way to disable updates or to properly go back to older iOS versions they could’ve resolved the issue and eaten their mistake, but no. They doubled down and promptly got sued for violating consumer trust, and then had to support it with security updates for years after its lifespan should’ve ended, and way after Apple tried to kill it.
You can’t activate a sim on iOS 6 anymore without some sketchy workarounds, so I’ll just keep it offline. It immediately tried to download iOS 8 as well which can fuck right off.

This is the reason why I really hate the idea of windows update and items in the os out of your control as the user, the idea that you need to be using bleeding edge fully updated windows to be secure is the exact same shit Apple did to convince people this was ok. Microsoft is doing the same thing now, your machine in their eyes is out of date, insecure and won’t even be supported for future windows versions. Fuck that and fuck them, install windows 7. Don’t even give them the chance to control an item you own.
