soldier_ph reacted to CodenameJK in A Missouri newspaper told the state about a website security risk. Now it faces prosecution.
Summary
Missouri Governor Mike Parson threatened to sue the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and prosecute a journalist who discovered a flaw in a state public records database and reported it to the state. The flaw involved the public exposure of 100,000 SSNs of educators that were inadvertently left in the HTML source of the webpage. After giving the state ample time to fix the issue, the paper published a story about the vulnerability. The governor responded in a press statement vowing to prosecute all involved under computer tampering laws.

My thoughts
Research and testing are the backbone of the cybersecurity field, and these things should always be encouraged through safe harbors and bug bounty programs. Compromised data from a bad actor will always be worse than embarrassment from being called out (no matter how pathetic it is to be sending unnecessary sensitive data "hidden" in HTML source). I think many people here will agree that prosecution is the last thing needed in this case, but this incident is a reminder of how technically-illiterate many of our elected officials can be, and could easily cause a chilling effect in vulnerability reporting, ultimately making everyone less safe.

soldier_ph reacted to Arika in Apple to release Handheld Console to compete with the Switch?
How about they just make a first party controller for the iphone and ipad?
Gamevice made one, (for the ipad) but doesn't have L3 and R3
and there is a billion controllers for the iphone.
i don't see this being real. I don't think there's enough games on the app store with full controller integration.
also
BULL. SHIT.

soldier_ph reacted to RejZoR in Apple to release Handheld Console to compete with the Switch?
They already have it. It's called an iPhone and iPad. Why would they make a whole new device when these can already be used for gaming and you either have it at home or always with you?
-
soldier_ph reacted to StDragon in Apple to release Handheld Console to compete with the Switch?
Considering the Apple TV is a reincarnation of the Apple Pippin, I'm going to guess this handheld will be called the Apple Pocket. 🥧
-
soldier_ph reacted to RONOTHAN## in Apple to release Handheld Console to compete with the Switch?
So it's a Steam Deck but with less games available and without acknowledging that right to repair exists?
-
soldier_ph reacted to adarw in Apple to release Handheld Console to compete with the Switch?
dont think this is real tbh, apple going back to the gaming industry will be a joke to gamers. maybe people in the ecosysteme will buy it but who knows.

Summary
Rumors coming out that Apple is going to release a new handheld gaming device to market.

My thoughts
At this point apple is all in on the new M1 / M2 silicon, so I expect any new devices being released to be a variant on that chip, making this an iPad with controls built in.
That being said? If they actually do that, and get support, it would put gaming back onto Apple devices, which could be a beneficial thing to their ecosystem across the board.
But I'll need to see a LOT from apple before I take any gaming products from them seriously.

soldier_ph reacted to Shreyas1 in US schools gave kids laptops during the pandemic. Then they spied on them
I thought it was common knowledge that work/school laptops are always monitored? I mean it's supposed to be a work device

soldier_ph reacted to JZStudios in US schools gave kids laptops during the pandemic. Then they spied on them
Not really news, people were saying this months ago and it wasn't just the US. And unless they made sure only people 18+ got these spy devices, it's also illegal. But nothing is going to be done about it, as per usual.

soldier_ph reacted to XWAUForceflow in Right to repair software being granted by the European Court of Justice
Summary
The European Court of Justice decided in a recent court case that there are particular situations in where it is legal to de-compile and reverse engineer a software to fix a broken or missing feature. While the ruling sets some limits to when you can do this, basically if you've been promised a feature or the software is not working you maybe legally allowed to fix the issue by yourself even if reverse engineering and de-compiling is normally not allowed.

My thoughts
This has the potential to be big, depending on how strict the guidelines will be set. The most interesting part I see here is how broad this can be interpreted. What actually entails 'impair the functioning of the software'? Does this include 'doesn't work on current hardware' or 'is not compatible with current OS versions'? Does this also mean that I as an individual can hire someone to de-compile the software and fix it for me? Which could lead to whole new business models being created. I am sure that this is not the last we hear about anything like this going to the courts, but boy does this potentially puts additional pressure on software companies to support their software. Though unfortunately I am afraid that this will further entice those companies to go even stronger with 'subscription only' models. (Because here they can stop this behavior much more effectively) This is pretty much 'right to repair' for software if you think about it.
Have not seen this posted before, sorry if I missed it.

I mean they're also pretty cool. But it's just Buses and Trucks which use that Technology here and no way as mainstream and broadly understood as EVs already are.

Oh for sure!! I'd love to get a Tesla in the future, probably until I can no longer go further with my current car lol. For warranty work, yeah just bring it to the dealership and let them work on the car and fix the problem. But once it's out of warranty...let the fun begin.
-
soldier_ph reacted to CommanderAlex in Experiences with non-techies
Only thing about Tesla cars I don't like is the repairability is pretty much zero. You'll have to bring it to a Tesla dealership to fix and good luck finding replacement parts (perhaps a junk yard).

So on Friday I got into an argument with one of my Coworkers about Combustion Engines and EVs because he was asking me questions about my E-Bike.
And he goes like: "You produce much more Co2 than I do with my Motorcycle which runs on regular Gas, both in production and on the road."
Me: While I agree with you that my E-Bike produces Co2 in the production and shipping (Virtually any physical Product does that) you're completely wrong on the producing Co2 while driving part. The whole point about EVs is about spitting Zero emissions into the atmosphere, reducing road noise, having as few moving parts as possible, being much safer and in case of Tesla's actually being the best Vehicle you would wanna be in during a Car Crash since they're built so damn well.
Then he starts to shit on E-Bikes and Tesla and bla bla.
He's also kinda a Covid denier and against getting Vaccinated so no wonder he's so Brain dead, also younger than me so there's that. Good thing I don't have to work together much with him.
It's funny to me that these Teens always talk about their dream Cars like BMWs, Mercedes's and Audios and how they're the fastest on the road. And they might have the top overall speed and pretty long ranges but do you know which production Car actually has the fastest 0-60 mph/0-100 km/h ?
That's right, Tesla Model S Plaid 2021 with 1.9 Seconds so I also win that argument. They gotta make the Roadster faster now lol. Please don't make this into a heated Car argument. I'm just a Tesla Fanboy lol.

this video was made 2 weeks ago (you can see by the thing they start with right here). i think that this was to show the new zen will be competitive to alderlake, this was probably rehearsed a lot,.

Is there something that I don't know? AFAIK it kinda caches the basic system components so they don't have to be loaded from scratch the next time the PC boots, and speeds up the boot process.
-
soldier_ph reacted to da na in Experiences with non-techies
Fast Startup in Windows can actually slow down your startup times... turning off fast boot in the BIOS however makes it much slower (on most modern boards its less though).
-
soldier_ph reacted to RockSolid1106 in Experiences with non-techies
This is literally what happened today.
Friend: "Hey my computer is booting very slow"
Me: "How long"
Friend: "Last time it took like 4 minutes"
Me: "Wtf"
Friend: "ikr"
Me: "Will have to check fast startup then"
Attaching screenshots because I'm too lazy to type
Another example of people who don't use their brains at all. It literally says it in the name, "fast" startup..

soldier_ph reacted to Avocado Diaboli in Experiences with non-techies
Coworker: "Hey Avocado, my work-issued iPhone doesn't sync calendars anymore. It caused me to miss an appointment."
Me: *after looking through the settings* "The app lacked permission to access mobile data. And since you weren't connected to the company Wi-Fi, there was no way for the phone to sync calendars. Someone must have turned off those permissions."
Coworker: "Oh, yeah, I think last time someone had a look in the settings was [coworker 2] when he helped me with something. He must've disabled it for some reason."
Me (internally): Yeah, sure, coworker 2 must've done it, even though he retired 2 years ago and I happen to know for a fact you don't have Wi-Fi at home, because you told me as much, that you use your phone as a hotspot for everything. So all the other synced appointments I saw in your calendar just magically appeared out of thin air between 2 years ago and now.
