so... "no one is safe" because of a commit that only made it into a dev build of fedora and debian?

while this is a potentially very big backdoor.. it seems that humanity had some karma saved up, and a microsoft dev of all people just happened upon the backdoor while working on a dev build.

the short of it is; if you havent updated in the past few days, there is no reason to suspect your system is affected.

It needs a lot of work, but I’m already on it

it has wheels but the separate image is too many megabytes for one post, they’re fine, rear wheel needs nothing, front wheel needs the bearings repacked with grease
cantilever brakes, levers, shifters are all toast
crankset could use a new middle chainring but it’s fine otherwise, headset needs to be repacked with grease, seatpost is seized, the seat is ass tier (pun not intended), bottom bracket needs to be replaced

I paid entirely too much for one of these: A BNIB Microsoft Pro IntelliMouse in Shadow Black. I wanted to get both the Pro and standard versions when they were still in production and I'm paying the price for not doing so.

Very early impressions are good, all things considered. I absolutely love the smaller ambi style of the G203 and GPW, however for being a bigger ergo mouse meant for righties the Pro IntelliMouse is very comfy. And the software is... Surprisingly good. So far only complaint is that the left/right clicks are very snappy and a bit on the loud side, and I guess my universal hatred for braided cables on mice.

120Hz screen to watch youtube, emails and spreadsheets TOPKEK get real. Not every computer has to be a "gAeMiNg ComPuTtaH" fellas, and what's with gaming laptops anyway? ugh, they can't do a single thing right, poor battery life so has to be constantly plugged in, defeating the whole point of a laptop, small screen so can't see crap no matter how high the placebo resolution is (even 1080p is overkill for a screen that size), constantly overheating and thermal throttling so you get piss poor performance and framerates that sink lower than your grades.

If you want vidya you get a desktop, and if you want portability you get a laptop, can't have both.

Apple is super closed but it's also almost idiot-proof, remember the devices are made for the kind of customer that call the internet "the wifi". Apparently the Apple store is much more restrictive when it comes to allowing random crap on their site, unlike Google's where you can download 400 types of malware in under 30 minutes by getting "free games" or "free office", heh.

Anyho remember I don't use smartphones, google or apple so I'm completely unbiased when it comes to this.

Hello Mr.Techtips and friends. I am here today to make an appeal. I know exactly how this post is going to be treated by people here but I want to say it anyways. Please stop advocating for Apple to make their accessories compatible with any hardware. Also please stop advocating for 3rd party app stores on iOS. I spent the first 31 years of my life using windows and android and hating on apple. I finally decided to learn why apple does what they do. Their philosophy and approach to user experience intrigued me. I bought an iphone, it was a great experience compared to my S20 Ultra. I bought an apple watch, also a great experience compared to my galaxy watch. I bought a m1 macbook, after learning how to navigate the os, it too was a great experience compared to windows. Homepods, home kit devices, apple tv. The way that all this stuff works together and creates a user experience where the hardware gets out of your way as much as possible is quite enjoyable. Apple’s dedication to user data privacy and security is another reason why I appreciate their philosophy. Nothing is un-hackable, but Apple does a much better job of protecting their customers than windows or android ever has. You think by advocating for cross platform compatibility of accessories you’re freeing people from being locked into Apple’s eco system, you’re not. You’re just ripping down the gate on our garden. We aren’t trapped in the garden we chose it, it’s really nice here. If people want to leave and go to android or windows they are free to do so. The only way that we are trapped is that there is not a better experience than apple. By advocating that Apple change their approach to accessories and 3rd party app stores you are asking them to compromise the security and experience their customers expect from apple. That could potentially lead to a loss in brand trust which is a big part of what makes apple, apple, customer trust. I’ll beat you to the punch and call myself a boot licker, apple fanboy, shill, tech illiterate, etc. If you aren’t a user of apple devices you have no say in how the company should operate. 🫡✌️

    Summary
Florida Govenor Ron DeSantis passed a new law banning people under the age of 14 from using social media with the reasoning that it is heavily addictive and the young people don't understand what they are getting into.
This legislation, called HB 3, is the same legislation that is requiring age verification for sexually explicit websites.

    My thoughts
I think all of this new legislation has the right heart and people under 14 100% should NOT be on social media. There are so many scammers and child predators that are just waiting for kids like these to fall for their schemes.
That said, I think the age verification is a TERRIBLE idea. Not because verifying age is bad in order to get on these websites, but it 100% could get hacked.

We have an inkjet plotter at our office to print out large format documents up to A0 width. We use it both to print out plans as well as for internal coursework to hang up on walls. The problem is that nobody ever double checks if they have the correct printer selected when they print out documents. And some people have managed to set the plotter as their default printer for some reason.

Here's a list of things I've fished out of the output tray of that machine over the years:
A4 sized documents on long strips of paper, with only the leftmost part printed and the rest of the paper left blank and therefore completely wasted. Random pictures and photos, sometimes private stuff, typically also in a size that wastes a ton of paper. Internal employee assessments. So, you know, confidential stuff. Every year we get a payroll document for tax purposes that lists our entire yearly salary and tax exempt deductions for the various retirement funds we have to pay into. Again, confidential stuff you really wouldn't want most people to see. Imagine my surprise when I walked in an saw one of the managers had printed out this document on A0 size. It's typically not easy to reconstruct who sent the print order without bothering our IT department, but since the that document lists the person's name on it, I rolled up the printout and walked over into that manager's office with a huge shit-eating grin on my face and reminded him to make sure he selects the correct printer in the future. Our regular printers only print out documents if you log in with your badge, so you never run the risk of just printing out confidential stuff by accident. But the plotter doesn't have that mechanism. Once you hit "print" on your PC, it prints out that document.

I've seen better cable management but I have certainly seen worse.

    Specs and stuff:
AMD 5900x Asus ROG Strix x570-E Gaming Gigabte RTx 3080 Gaming OC 10G 32GB Patriot Viper DDR4 Cooler Master MasterLiquid 240L NZXT H510 1TB samsung 970 EVO Plus 6TB total of spinning rust Elgato 4k60 Pro Mk2 27" Gigabyte 1440p 170Hz monitor 24" Acer secondary monitor XP Pen Artist Pro 15.6 AKG K702 headphones Rode NT1A that runs into a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Gen2 Also featured is my Switch, Valve Index, one of my cameras, a couple of fountain pens and a doodle.

    The work setup:
To be honest I do not want to list out EVERYTHING since there is a lot of stuff. Also I have spent some time this year drastically streamlining the setup for better single-operator use since it's typically just me having to look after the place solo.
Some of the standout bits and bobs though:
Yamaha QL5 4x Blackmagic Studio cameras Various bits of rack mounted Blackmagic hardware include ATEM switches and Videohubs Blackmagic ATEM 1M/E Advanced Panel Not enough Stream Decks that I use Bitfocus Companion with A LOT of lights, most of which can be controlled by DMX A bunch of other stuff.... There's a lot I can talk at length about broadcast kit so I am MORE than happy to answer questions on it. If money was no object, I would love an Ultimatte to include in the setup somewhere for experimenting with more virtual set stuff. The ATEM switch does have keying tools but more toys are always cool.
