soldier_ph reacted to Mr.Meerkat for a blog entry, Doing circuits and landings...
Today, I was able to fly in both the morning and afternoon.

Our morning flight was delayed by an hour due to fog/mist however it did clear and thus we were able to fly. We did 7 circuits however they were all low passes. Circuits were suprsingly less demanding that I had expected.

In the afternoon flight, I did my first landing! We did 3 touch n go before we exited the circuit to go over what to do in an engine failure. We then came back to do a shortfield landing.
My first (ever) touch n go was slightly rough but it got better on the two touch n go afterward. For the shortfield landing, I was coming in a little too low, increased the throttle too much and lets just say that it was an incredibly hard landing however as saying goes, "if its a landing that you can walk away, its a good landing"...

With today completed, this means that I can now do everything from startup to shutdown, as long as we ignore navigation and emergencies.

soldier_ph reacted to colonel_mortis for a blog entry, LTT Forum Tech Stack
The LTT forum is built on Invision Community (previously known as IPS and IPB), an off-the-shelf forum software. The majority of the code that powers the forum is theirs, and the technologies that we can use are largely constrained by what Invision Community supports.

The backend is written entirely in PHP, using a custom framework built specially for Invision Community. Some type annotations have been introduced into the codebase recently, but most of the code was written before PHP supported types and is therefore untyped (this applies to both IC's code and our custom additions). For a sense of scale, there are over 450,000 lines of PHP in Invision Community, and about 12,000 lines of LTT-specific PHP.

Data is stored in MySQL, Elasticsearch and Redis. MySQL is the source of truth for all of the data in the system, and interaction with it from the backend code use Active Records. User content is duplicated into Elasticsearch to power the search functionality, as well as activity feeds and content feeds on user profiles (everywhere that combines content of multiple different types into one view). Redis is just used as a cache for frequently accessed or expensive values.

Requests are handled using NGINX, and your requests also pass through Cloudflare before getting there to the server.

All of the backend services are hosted on one server, with a 16 core EPYC processor. On the server, we're running CentOS 8.

For the frontend, all of the HTML rendering is performed on the server side, using a custom HTML template syntax that works similarly to mustache (although with considerably less polish). Writing this code is virtually identical to writing raw HTML, except that you can use variables, use loops, and import other templates. Invision Community also has its own front end CSS framework, which generally works well to minimise the specific CSS required for each new feature.

Continuing with the trend, there is also a custom Javascript framework for attaching controllers to elements and for declaring and using UI widgets. The framework is built for ES5 + jQuery; while it is possible to use ES6+ features in custom code, there is rarely enough that needs doing with custom code to be able to make use of much.

We can easily edit the PHP, HTML and CSS provided by Invision Community, both using their hook system and by directly modifying code on our fork of the code, but the Javascript framework is generally not editable because it doesn't provide a generally useable hooking mechanism and the code is stored in the database rather than in files. This means that custom javascript is generally limited to only the small amount needed to support new functionality; accordingly, we only have about 400 lines of LTT-specific JS.

I've also built a couple of GitHub actions in Typescript to automate some boring tasks, such as updating the repo with the latest version of Invision Community.

People love "battlestation" pictures. Some love their battlestations....others; apparently not to much. I'm collecting and showcasing set ups that people clearly put no effort into presentation. I've tried to not grab ones that were posted satirically. It's like a discount 'we roast your worse setups' series that LTT did.

If your set up appears on this list....that's your fault, take it as a hint to clean it up!

What absolute monster uses a single monitor in portrait mode?

You might think "well maybe they are a developer", but the title was "this is my 10-year old brother's new setup" so i have doubts
    also the tiniest mousepad ever

    -------

I know glass desks are hard to cable manage by virtue that they are see through....but even a tiny attempt would have been appreciated. Especially given the PC sitting next to the desk.

    ------

You wouldn't happen to be resting your feet ON the wall under your desk would you? (this was 1 photo of a set of photos)

    ------

I really hope that brown stain on the black shelf is paint and not poop. Though given the absolute state of that grotty remote, i can't really be sure.

just wipe things down before you take your photos, that's all i ask, that keyboard is distracting.

    -------

speaking of poop.....why is the cat litter box in the same room as your PC? your cat is clearly walking all over your desk and that cat paw litter dust is going to have poop and urine in it, and now it's all over your desk. that candle is going to be working overtime. but seriously that is just unhygienic

    --------

I don't know where to start with this one. The shredded chair, the massively bowing desk, or the desk being infront of  some other storage unit

    --------

dust! i don't even care that the surface on the right is cracked, just wipe it off at least before taking the photo, you even acknowledged it when you posted it.

    --------

There is more trash than computer on the "desk" (that's about to fucking break), doesn't look like it has been vacuumed in months and whats with the random picture hangers still on the wall, but nothing atteched to them?

    cute cat though.

    ----------

So many docment organisers.....and somehow you decided to leave that thicc stack just hanging off the edge?

    --------

guy got a brand new mac mini and wanted to show it off. got that pristine white apple keyboard....and the grossest (ex)white microsoft mouse i think i've ever seen. sure hope that mousepad has some design on it i can't make it and that it's ot hand grease.

    --------

Gross mousepad, gross floor, gross desk.

Maybe the worst part is the KRK rockit speaker on it's side with no obvious right channel. such a waste

    ------

    The trash....the chair....the even more trash...why?

    --------

"the right side of my floor is my bin".....of course they drink monster energy, bet their name is Kyle. Wonder what colour that carpet is meant to be? i can see about 4 different colours within in.

    -----

Maybe not as bad as THIS though.

Used paper plates UNDER the desk on the floor, gross wall on the right, potential blood splatter over the monitor, the bottle of cheetos....maybe he rubs his fingers clean on the wall?

    ----------

couldn't just remove the empty sauce bottle?

    ----------

Few things wrong with this one. Backwards PC, that chair, unvacuumed carpet.....that atrocious power point placement

    --------

Dusty af keyboard....and please tell me those scars on the left arm aren't what i think they are, could have maybe done without showing those.

    ------------

At first i was going to criticize this one for the gross looking desk, but turns out that's just one of those marbled counter tops.....almost scrolled past, but then realised this guy's PC is set up in the laundry. with the washing machine under the desk (so fuck leg room) and the ironing board in the peeling paint corner.

    -----------

Tissues on the radiator (seriously why?) bucket underneath, a chair that looks like it was gotten for free despite the colossal PC next to the desk, do you have money or not?

    ----------

    just....trash.....so much trash.

    --------

This one was fine, until i released the desk is crooked as hell, it's not even close to being parallel to the wall. i'm not crazy right?

    ---------

Why do these people always drink monster energy?

i can't pick the worst thing, the chair, the desk, the trash, the cum rags on the desk, the cum rags on the floor, or what looks like a little baggie of actual narcotics

I used my iFixit Pro Tech Toolkit and the official iFixit Teardown Guide to take apart the PS3.

I put a PET Recycling bag on the floor in my room to catch all of the dust and most importantly the disgusting brown smoking debris. I had the Window open all the time and wore Latex gloves in the whole process. I cleaned my iFixit tools afterwards with Alcohol screen wipes. It took me around 2 hours to take the Console completely apart as I had to take breaks to conduct the Guide and make sure I won't break anything as this was my just my second Teardown of a Console.

My trusty tools: Black powder free Latex gloves, tools from the iFixit Pro Tech Toolkit and the iFixit Projects map and my Dyson V11 Absolute Extra with the amazing HEPA Filter at the back (the purple thing).

Managed to Tear it down without breaking anything, even all of the annoying plastic clips are still all intact.

    The Motherboard:

Didn't know there were Thermalpads until I inspected the Board close up. Yes the Thermalpaste is Hard af.

    Tracking all of the Screws:

Since I don't yet have Isopropanol Alcohol to clean everything it'll have to wait for that. Because the Components and even the Screws have this disgusting smoke smell I put them each into a PET Bag and sealed it close with a Zip tie. I then sprayed a bit of Air Refresher in my room and left the Windows open to get rid of the disgusting smell and made sure the floor was clean with my Dyson.

To my surprise there was very little dust and no Bugs (dead or alive) inside the Console, just brown dust yikes. I've done this in my room since I needed to be concentrated despite the bad smell and couldn't afford to be distracted by my dogs or family members. Now to wait till I've got money again to spend on cleaning supplies, the actual cleaning of each Component with Isopropanol will of course be done Outside and not in the House.

Yep. Trump ordered police to use tear gas on peaceful (very harmful) to clear way for him for his photo-op (a Bishop said it was an abuse of the Bible), which resulted in violence instead of peace so tension is high.

The protests happened after a policeman suffocated a black George Floyd for no reason, and then lied about it in the report.

    Tech
AMD Ryzen on Smartphones?? Leak suggests that AMD is working on a SoC to compete against Qualcomm, and it has impressive specs.
Everyone wants to be a hacker with 5-year high in Google Search terms related to "Hacker course".

I believe it is important that during the times of outlining and appreciating the efforts of high rankings we reflect on why we are folding. We give thanks to those that made it possible and treasure each and every single person that pushed and folded against this invisible enemy.

Coronavirus has claimed over 100,000 lives across the globe, infecting over two million people. This is why we fold, this is the reason we have been brought together. Only in times of such hardship do we see the best and worst of mankind. People from all walks of life doing what they can to help, volunteering, folding, shopping and delivering for their communities, singing, cheering to our key workers. This is the embodiment of humanity, this is how our generation should be remember during this crisis. We are strong, united, resolute. We will not let ourselves be overcome by fear for as long as we have each other. So, go fourth caring with respect, with patience, with tolerance, with kindness in your heart, because it is surely needed in today's world.

    Before we get into the rankings there are a few things I want to mention;

    1. Although I have been the fact of this event I want everyone to take a moment to give thanks to @Metallus97 for his amazing contribution with the FAQ, tech support and help with the datasheet, @j1philli who has been a tremendous help with validating entries on the sheet and finally @leadeater who wrote the script we used for ensuring smooth data collection.

    2. I'd like everyone to head over and donate a few dollars to Jason at EOC, his servers must have taken a beating with all the traffic we have thrown at the guy over the last few weeks or so. You can either use this PayPal link or find the PayPal donation button on the EOC Website on the right. Don't forget to include a note so he knows it came from team LTT, mine said 'With love for LTT, thanks for everything you do.'

    3. I'd like to give a personal thanks to everyone who has been understanding of my own health during this event, it was hastily thrown together which lead to more issues than usually found!

    4. Finally I'd like to ask that you continue to fold, for the benefit of all of us, even if it is in a far more limited capacity moving forward.

It has been an exciting event, despite the darkness that looms over the world currently many of us, including myself have found a little lightness on the event thread, this doesn't have to end, we do have a Folding Community Board in which you can continue the conversation in all its glory! You can find that Here!

I want to give thanks to everyone who has been involved folding for TeamLTT over the last few weeks, no matter if you are folding only a few points a day or millions, no matter if you signed up to the event or not, your hard work and dedication is appreciated! Don't forget that if you talk about folding on twitter use the hastag #TeamLTT and I will be trying to keep an eye on it, so now, after you have read this post and feel the need to go troll PCMR a little, and lets be honest, after the pitiful attempt to challenge us, you will feel the need. We can all be a little more connected!

In first place, we have @Macaw2000 with an impressive 339,946,109 points warned with 5,613 Work units over the 14 days of the event. He utilised mercenaries well to make a final dash for the throne and now he sits comfortably, in the plush luxury smiling upon those that stand below him.

Second place we have the great oppressor, the disgraced king, @Den-Fi, who failed to take by his throne lost during the great crusades of Folding Month 2019. With 296,964,235 Points achieved with a surprising small 1,444 Work Units it has to be said that he certainly had one of the highest P/WU ratios in the event.

Third place we see is occupied by @walderston, who, given just a little more time could have snatched the silver spot from the fallen king. 237,268,117 Points taken with 1,261 Work Units is nothings to bite your thumb at for sure. But he will be left wondering if he can do better next event!

Fourth place is taken by the veteran @miker07 who has once again proved his worth with 196,425,757 points taken through 2,203 Work units. Forth place is nothing to be ashamed with but it will be interesting to see if he expands his forces by the time folding month comes around.

Fifth place finds @ZombieStew content with his first showing in a LTT Folding event, 145,684,152 Points and 2,079 Work units. He will certainly be looking forward to future events!

Sixth place we have another newcomer, @Unilevers, a fine showing that we hope to see again in the future.

Seventh place is @bafo_ah, another newbie shaking up the team with a good showing.

Eighth place is @wi3si, it will be excited to see if they can muster any more force for the future.

Ninth place can be claimed by @Ayren, who only folded for 13 days should be asking did that one day down cosy them too much?

Tenth place is where we leave this today, @GalaxyNetworks is the proud holder of 10th, the gatekeeper, but will they be bettering themselves next time out.

And here you can find the full set of data including the Prize allocations:- Full Folding Data and Ranks!

If you don't see your name on the list above you either did not sign up for this event or you did not meet the minimum requirements. This event was not eligible for Folding Event Badges, PLEASE DO NOT message me or the team about event badges. For general folding badges use the thread Here!

Now it is time for the prizes!

I was planning to tag each winner but due to the number of prizes and limitation I have recently been made aware of the winning ranks will be listed here and the winners will be tagged in comments to this post. This will ensure all winners get a notification for the tag.

The winners will have 7 working days from the publication of this post to claim the prize, if the prize goes unclaimed it will be added to the community pool for use in future events. In order to claim the Prize you will need to PM me here on the forum, with the subject

'Give me the key that I am owed!'

Also please can you include your rank to make it quicker and easier for me to get it all sorted!

    Events that are coming up!

    Top Jank of The Event!

I really just want to thank you all again for taking part in the event, you guys have really made it special, every single one of you!

with all that said it is finally time to wrap this one up, but please continue to fold and I am looking forward to seeing you guys take part in the BOINC Pentathlon, Summer folding sprint and most assuredly, Folding Month 2020!

    This is Spectrum signing off,

Ladles and gentlespoons, four days down, ten days to go, it seems like many people have been clambering to up their production, but how much of a difference is this likely to make, only time will tell!

Todays PSA is to remind you all to check your temps and dust out your system as required!

Today's drink is, Bulleit Bourbon and Pepsi max

The great team of LTT continues to steam ahead, blowing all previous records out of the water! It was once said that when the call to action came in the enthusiast community would be too selfish to mobilise in great numbers, well here we are! Standing tall, proud, unified! We have dedicated so many resources, so much time, and power. We throw ourselves into the task, babysitting our devices, reading up ways to maximise our production, supporting each other! Thank you to every single one of you who has joined the fight against COVID-19, and I hope to see you hang around the folding team after all this is over. All are welcome here at team LTT!

Look at this amazing Video from EOC that shows our climb up the ranks, and I believe it would be amazing to see this climb continue.

In first place the king @Den-Fi sits on his throne, holding onto the crown with an amazing 64.49 million points, he id really pulling ahead and now we find ourselves asking, can he be conquered. Second place is occupied by @ZombieStew, but with 37.85 million points I'm sure he has come to terms with the fact that he won't be sitting on any thrones by the end of this. @miker07 takes third place with 36.95 million points, he could seriously be looking to take the number two spot if he can only find himself a little more grunt to throw at the problem. With a wide gap opening up behind him he must be feeling pretty secure as @Xoggy comes in fourth with 25.4 million points, the X man doesn't have the power needed to advance further by the looks of it and there are a few further down the table that could be a challenge to him over the coming days. Fifth place is taken up by @n0xlf, it looks like they have had a tough day folding only bagging 3.4m points bringing his total up to 23.5 million, if he is wanting to keep that spot there needs to be more power thrown at the problem! @Fapasaurus is in 6th with 19.2m points, but with a production of 4.8m he could prove to be a challenger for the ahead of him if he plays the cards rights. Sitting 1.9m points behind him we find @BlackAda with 17.3m points. @Favebook finding himself in in 8th in such a large competition goes to show some of the pedigree we have here in the ranks, but, as he will know quite well, everything can change during the event. With 16.8m points he is in a precarious place, as not far behind we have @Unilevers who has already been promoted from the gatekeeper spot with 16.5m. The new man of the gate of the top 10 is @Ayren, with 15.9m it can be said that they are pulling theor weight to keep that place in the rankings for sure! 11th place we have @LAR_Systems who has fallen out of grace with the folding gods and has fallen down the stack, holding on with 15.6m it's all to place for to squeeze into the top 10! @Yabdat, another well seasoned folder is sitting in 12th place with a comfortable 15.5m, he will almost certainly be looking at these numbers closely to see if theres an advantage to be had. But, it will be important for him to cast his eyes to his rear as we have @HybridTI outpacing him and only a divide of 200k points separate the two folders. But the predator that is @Macaw2000 is firing on all cylinders, having both of them in their sights by outproducing then with a total of 15.2 million points so far! And in 15th place we have @catawalks, the walker of cats, the purveyor of felines, holding into the last of the top 15 spots with 15.1m points.

Looking down the stack we do have some more interesting guys popping up, like @BlueSpartan, who with a production of 2.5m points in the last day could truly be planning to make a splash. @cyberguy91, @abakus3k and @madarus are also ones to watch for sure in the coming days!

As you can see it all so very exited here. With the top spots being passed back and forth as people try their bast to force more production out of their machine, but, be cautious, because if you push it too far you may drop WUs and although this early in the game it may not be world-ending. I'm sure you'd end up with a little egg on your face regardless!

    Day Four Stats

    as always:

Please remember that this is a friendly event, but we are all folding away for science, AND GLORY!

I'm really impressed with the numbers we are seeing here for all of folding, Thank you to all who are involved and who make this worth while every event!

Remember we are a team first and individuals second, so give thanks where thanks is due and hit that reaction button when someone helps you out.

Be wary of the minimum participation requirements this year.

minimum requirements: 500k points, and 10 days of having activity over the course of our 14 day event.

    Happy folding,

    Spec.

soldier_ph reacted to colonel_mortis for a blog entry, A breakdown of Saturday's outage
Timeline of the outage: (times in UTC)
Starting at 02:03 on Saturday, requests started intermittently returning error 502, and many of the requests that were served successfully were significantly slower than normal At 05:59, most of the services on the server crashed. All subsequent requests were served by Cloudflare with error code 502 At about 11:00, I came online and attempted to diagnose the problem. Due to the previous failures I was unable to access the server, so all I was able to do was route traffic to an offline page At 16:35, with extra help, the server was forcibly restarted At 16:43 the server seemed to have come up successfully, so we enabled traffic and monitored the status By 16:53 it was clear that performance very poor and a significant fraction of the requests were resulting in error 502 (which means in this case that the server was already processing too many requests, so where were no workers available), so we disabled traffic again to investigate the situation further At 17:36, there was nothing clearly wrong so we tried enabling traffic again At 17:39 the performance was significantly regressing again so the site was turned offline again At 18:00 we ordered a new server At 18:35 the server was ready to be set up with all of the forum-related things, and for the data to be migrated to it At 21:28, the new server was fully set up and the forum was turned back online
    What were the symptoms?
IOWait accounted for the majority of CPU time, but IO utilisation was relatively normal In the syslog we were seeing a number of IO timeouts for the primary drive Prior to rebooting, the limited errors that we could see indicated that there had been disk corruption
    What was the root cause?
Although we aren't 100% sure, we think it's fairly likely that one of the two RAID 1 disks that form the primary disk had failed, and the poor performance was a consequence of trying to rebuild the array.

Why replace the server rather than the disk?
There were already plans to replace the server, this failure just accelerated them. We were also of the opinion that having the disk replaced and getting the array rebuilt would likely not end up being faster, especially as we did not have sufficient information to pinpoint the failure.

Well the Corona virus has been the centre of many of our minds and our headlines. I'm not going to make this long, I believe we have all heard far too much about that damned virus in recent times.

We today push forward with dedicating our technical resources towards the greater good, whether that be for COVID or for any number of other projects that Folding at Home supports.

I am excited and proud to announce that we have now surpassed 1900 sign ups, it is truly an unprecedented time for Folding at Home, and if I could I would welcome and thank every single one of you.

But the truth is, this is a dark time, where many of us are filled with fear. But, we will not relent, we will not rest, we will not give in. This virus has brought the worst out of us, but also some of the best. There have been such an outpouring of community support around the world and that is truly beautiful to see.
