The 'real' 5.1 surround with the 3x 3.5mm jack is mostly only for computer-surroundsoundsystems. Any older 5.1 system will indeed have 'fake' surroundsound, with the rear speakers copying the front speakers. In order to drive 2 RCA's from your computer you will probably have to buy an external soundcard or an integrated (and thus more expensive) PCI-e soundcard.

I use 3x 3,5mm jacks to 6 RCA, for my surround sound system, but I will be moving to optical as soon as I'm finish upgrading.
There are multiple cheap optical splitters available, if that is easier: http://www.ebay.com/bhp/optical-splitter

His motherboard does support surround sound, he just needs the right cables.
