Have you pulled the board out of the case? It's possible there's something behind the motherboard causing it to short out.

Votivee got a reaction from BlackManINC in What UPS should I get for my PC?
    https://www.amazon.com/APC-Protector-Back-UPS-Including-DataTraveler/dp/B07YBJRFWG

I've got this, it holds my 3080 and 12900k long enough to save my game/work and safely shut down. I have two monitors but only hook one up to the battery. I don't know a ton about UPSs but I do know to look for one with a SineWave system.

It would be a good system for your setup, you could probably go a little cheaper depending on your goals. Personally I would only look for something to hold your computer over 5-10 minutes unless you need extended uptime for some reason. Save your work, shut down.

If you're in the US wait for Black Friday/Cyber Monday coming up. UPSs can get stupid discounts.

Votivee reacted to SpookyCitrus in Why are all the MP3 players horribly rated?
I mean, with that budget. Arcade machine prize quality is really the only option. Quality MP3 players are few and far between and much more money. There isn't really a market for them with cell phones and spotify being a thing so that's a major reason why. Honestly investing in a battery bank that can charge up your phone would be more worth it than buying a dinky little MP3 player. Otherwise spend the money to get an actual quality MP3 player. It's almost like you get what you pay for?

Nextcloud sounds like it might be a better solution for your needs. Basically Google Drive/Dropbox but you host it. Very (end) user friendly.

You can run Nextcloud as a TrueNAS plugin.

One thing to keep in mind is that if your clients are viewing very high res videos your internet may have a tough time keeping up. You can have the fastest computer in the world but your home internet speeds will never be able to compete with Google.

I've had Dell Latitude's at a few different companies now and never had an issue with them. They're solid workhorses and check most if not all of your boxes including ethernet and full size HDMI.

Votivee got a reaction from lieder1987 in Can I start my new PC without wanting to install the software?
Not a silly question. It's pretty typical with new hardware to test it outside of the case to make sure everything works before building it.

Yes, you can boot it and it will either say "Boot device not found" or go right into the bios. You can just turn it back off by turning the power supply off (if it has a switch), through the bios, holding down your case power button, or bridging the front panel jumpers with a screwdriver.

What model is it? I had no idea Synology made a NAS without a network port. Kinda silly as that's the main purpose of that device... to be network attached.

You dont need to use anything like truenas to make a nas out of anything. As long as device repository has NFS and/or SAMBA in it, all you have to do is mount the drive and set a samba/nfs share to it. I have been using a OrangePi Zero as a nas with two external HDDs for the last 3 years.

If this is sensitive data please encrypt your drive immediately if it isn't already. I would also strongly suggest making a backup and storing it in a different location not in that building.

This right here. Use BitLocker on the drive or put the data on a USB, encrypt it then hide it.

I agree with the other points but this not at all. It's been proven over and over that sata drives are MORE THAN PLENTY for almost any user. The only category where it becomes too slow is for the some creative types and data crunchers (this is in the normal single user scenario's)

Honestly looks to me like someone put a glass of soda or something on top of the pc, spilled it, and then attempted to clean it up.

As stated above 80's are fine, though that cooler should perform better.

If you're not happy with your temps I'd try cleaning it and reapplying thermal compound. Maybe check your fan curve. Much cheaper than buying an entirely new cooler.

By “to play with” do you mean games or general fuckery?

Also I hope you’re aware old servers are very loud, power hungry, and those lengthy rackmounts will be a pain in the ass to kee anywhere other than, well, a rack.

There are definitely people that will love to talk to you about these on the Ubiquiti (unofficial) Discord: https://discord.gg/ui

Other than that, I recommend searching on eBay, and specifically choose the "Sold Listings" option. The UAS-XG used is going for $1000-$1200, I purchased one for about $950 last year.
