I've not heard of windows.old reserving 50% of your RAM. Doesn't make sense. The be all & end all solution is to re-install Windows but if it's avoidable then that's easiest/cheapest for you.
 
Before you go spending money on that though I'd test with another HDD/SSD with a fresh install. If the problem goes away them it's something going on with Windows.

This isn't the best way to verify the problem but you could try live booting Linux off a thumb drive. If all the RAM registers properly it suggests the issue is Windows.

So recently my girlfriends 10 year old laptop died. So we are looking for a replacement, any help is much appreciated 
We live in Ireland so we are trying to use websites like currys, Harvey norman, Amazon and frankly and EU website that ships. 
The price range is maxed at like 500 maybe 600 at a big push. 
It needs to last the next 4 years of uni, and will be used for mostly uni, watching videos, very light gaming and general women stuff. 
I know the budget is tight so thank you for any help

When installing I must pick a drive and when I choose my drive it gives this warning this drive will fail soon, it still lets me install it though 

I'd get a GTX 1060, an SSD and a better power supply... and more ram

Just think about it for a few days if you have to. I rushed to get my 970 and it didn't work well for a few weeks until i updated some drivers.

Either is good once the price is right, I'd like games like witcher 3 on 60fps on high to ultra if possible and so 3 d designing 

I could probably push to 1200€ max ?

Hard to tell, it strongly depends on the purpose of the setup and on your rig.
