DailyProcrastinator got a reaction from carnifex2005 in Asus PG279Q Power Issue?
This may sound crazy, but it has worked for me in the past on more than one occasion. Might not solve your issue either but there is no harm in trying.

But sometimes capacitors get overloaded. And it can cause no display issues. The 'fix' is to unplug the power from the display, and then hold the power button for like 10 seconds. It drains any voltage left from the capacitors and therefor negates the no display issue because of capacitor overload.

Give it a go. If that does not solve your issue then ignore my crazy ramblings haha.

I've built a few keyboards in my day, but this one by far has to be the most interesting. It is the Libre Mini forty five, I have no clue how to do numbers on this thing. I got the bare bones kit off AliExpress for one hundred and twenty dollars, and am using Drop Halo True switches and drop skylight key caps. The key caps are just for the time being until I bother to order a proper set for this keeb.

The thumb stick is used as the arrow keys, it doesn't naively support working as a thumb stick like on a controller, though I haven't tried looking for drivers to do that. I am also thinking of painting the plates.

Thought y'all would find this interesting, any ideas on what key caps I should use?

Going through my pile of C64 floppies to see what all works. So far, only one dead disk, Accolades “Fast Break”
One disk with security, Golden Axe, which requires a manual I googled to get the keywords.
And a few I cannot find manuals or control references for which is a pain, a lot of the racing games have the most asinine controls and they make no sense.
Gyruss is my default and it’s a cartridge because it’s fun and simple

GeOS because why not, I have both disks but no ram expansion to do anything, I’ll need to get a ram expansion

my boss really likes this one and wanted to drop by to play it in the future, Jordan vs Bird: One on One

I need a second Atari controller as this is a 2 player game only

This start up screen for test drive is god tier, it’s a great intro I highly advise looking up. As a game to play it’s a nightmare, I don’t have blank 5.25” floppies or two drives, you load the game, then load a “scenery disk” which is a track, and then load a car disk to pick a car, there are so many loading screens and disk swaps the multi disk install of GTA V on the Xbox 360 looks reasonable

but it is really cool when you get going

After buying the Fractal Design Meshify C i never thought switching cases ever again for my main system. Few days ago the Torrent case from Fractal Design was available and i instantly liked it so naturally i had to give it a go!
This post will be a combo of showing off my build and give you my thoughts on the case and my experience building in it.

Editionally i ran a before and after Temperature test.
    This includes:

Heaven Benchmark 4.0 at 1080p maxed out settings looping for about 10minutes (after 10min the temps were bascially flatlined as you will see in the pictures below).
F1 2021, 5 laps of Belgium SPA 1080p (mostly medium graphics settings and FPS unlocked).
For the test results check the review below the post/pictures!

    Part list
    Intel Core 8700k
Nvidia GTX 1080ti Strix with 2x Corsair 120mm airflow fans 11rpm

Fractal Design Torrent White TG Clear Tint

Starting with the exterior of this case, the case has a aggressive look, the front panel has a beautiful grill with a build thinn mesh dust filter.
This case comes in many different variants, colors and different tints of glas. I went with the White version and Clear TG.

The layout: Unlike 99% of case, the top of the Torrent does not have exhaust fans, this is because the PSU is mounting in the top of the case with easy acces when you remove the top panel.
Cooling is centered around the intake at the bottom and front, this case is deffently centered around positive air pressure setup.
The case comes with 2x 180mmx38mm fans in the front and 3x 140mm in the bottom, i went with the non RGB fans but this case is also availble with RGB fans. The case comes with a fan hub that supports 9x 4pin fans!
The case comes with an extra box that includes two fan brackets, these brackets you can mount in the front of the case if you don't want to use the included 180mm fans.

Panels: All of the panels on this case are extremly easy to remove, no need to be scared of braking plastic tabs anymore!
the top panel is secured with 2 screws in the back and the panel slides cleanly off. The front panel you can pull of very easy from the top side and this will remove this dust filter at the same time, neat!. The side panels you can simply pull off from the back of the case, each panel includes a tab you can pull on, the panel by default are not secured with screws but there is an option to do so.

Build experience: After removing all case panels you are greeted by so much space, everything is easy to get at even with big hands. One thing you will notice right away is the amount of cable tie points, these cable tie points are placed in all the right places. Hardware placement is straight forward and plently of room for a big aircooler as well. The cable management was not hard but not easy either, i think Fractal Design did a good job on the amount of space you get for the cables but you do have to tie the cables down so the side panel fits nicely. As shown in the pictures above you can see that I've mounted the SSD's and the NZXT hue+ unit on the inside using the Reservoir mounts, I don't know if the spacing was intented by Fractal Design but the holes line up perfectly and it fills up the dead space nicely.

Cooling: With the big fans the airflow is just crazy, the bottom and front fans are running at 600rpm and the airflow at these low rpms is just stunning, I've never had a case where i can feel the airflow coming out the rear of the case. Without a rear fan mounted you can feel the airflow as if there is a rear fan mounted. I've added a rear fan for the looks but this not needed at all.

As i noted before I've ran 2 temperature tests, Heaven loop and F1 2021.
The previous case is the Meshify C with Front: 3x Noctua NF-F12 at 900-rpm, Rear 1x Noctua NF-F12 at 900-rpm and 1x top Noctua NF-A14 at 800-rpm.
The current case Fractal Design Torrent with Front: 2x Dynamic GP-18 at 600-rpm, Bottom 3x Dynamic GP-14 at 600-rpm and 1x Rear Noctua NF-A14 at 500-rpm
GPU fans were at 1100rpm static in both cases.

Both tests were at a room temp of 23C, To be clear i've ran both tests 3 times each and the results were the same every time.
We saw a 10C drop on the GPU, Not only did we drop 10C on the GPU, it is also boosting higher: before:1936mhz / after:1962mhz in Heaven Benchmark 4.0.

This (busily being restored, but with a new backplane because the old one was corroded toast).

Most of it is done now, front panel is restored (the picture shows the condition it arrived in, all corroded and missing switches).

It's an 8080 processor - a predecessor to the 8086 and 8088 (kinda like the Z80 which is basically compatible).  Though you can now get up to a 486 in the chassis as someone was mad enough to design the board for it over on the S-100 forums.

    ETA: January 12, 2022.

TKL fans rejoice! It's an aluminum keeb for sub-$200! 😁
Has an acrylic butt, so it's not an all-metal, chassis, but the specs look pretty solid. 👀
A friendo tells me that IDOBAO's had fitting issues in the past, however. Also, expect some machining marks or slight imperfections here and there.

Product Page: IDOBAO ID87 V2 TKL from Drop.

    Specs:
TKL Layout (80%) ANSI Layout Hot-Swappable PCB Kailh Hot-Swap Sockets Compatible with 3-Pin + 5-Pin Switches QMK-Compatible USB-C Connectivity Integrated Plate Mounting? (Cheatsheet) Per-Key White LEDs, RGB Underglow South-Facing LEDs Aluminum-Acrylic Chassis + Brass Weight Colors: Black, Gray, White, Red, Purple PCB-Mounted Stabilizers 🤔
Makes me think of the High-Profile Drop CTRL.
The CTRL has north-facing LEDs and plate-mounted stabilizers / switches, though.

Yesterday morning, I got a care package from my fellow subreddit (r/modelm) mod that included two keyboards! First up is a very cool NOS IBM 4683 Matrix Keyboard from sometime in the '80s. It was however opened up once by the sender to confirm what it was and what switches it had. The internal assembly is made by Key Tronic for IBM and uses Key Tronic’s Foam & Foil capacitive switches (supposed to be the tactile variant but it actually feels like very stiff linears). It also included a template kit and ‘windows’ for use with making labels for the keycaps.

The IBM 4683 is noteworthy for being the first PC/'x86'-based point of sale retail system from the company. And this keyboard is noteworthy for being a large vintage ortholinear keyboard/macropad (although even earlier ortho keyboards from IBM are known, such as the 254-key IBM Multi-Shift Kanji Keyboards of the '70s). Anyway, this was spiritually suceeded by the IBM Model M11 Modifiable Layout Keyboard in 1993, which was a dome with slider keyboard with an integrated magnetic stripe reader.

The second keyboard is just an IBM 3471 InfoWindow terminal Model M that needs some work (fix rivets, dirty, etc.). It's rather unremarkable, although it has some history as it was professionally converted by a company (C.E.L., who were known for doing stuff like this to IBM keyboards in the '90s and early '00s) in 2000 to be used with a different family of terminals than it was design for. My best guess is that it originally was an IBM 3151 keyboard from the late '80s. In any case, I didn't have a C.E.L.-touched keyboard in my collection and now I've patched that gap up!

You're safe leaving them in, I always do just to keep the unused ports dust free. Although depending on your case I would remove them then re-insert them after the GPU has been installed as they can get caught behind the metal shroud of the case and they are not removable unless you take out your GPU. If that makes sense.

DailyProcrastinator reacted to Eschew in An Introduction to Custom Mechanical Keyboards
    Minor Update - Content Migration
From the main thread, the content of [Section 6.0] Online Vendors and Marketplaces has been migrated over to Custom Mechanical Keyboards - Vendors List. To save myself the trouble of separately updating two things every time there's a change, I will be removing the majority of Section 6.0's content on July 31, 2021. What will remain will be a link to the refreshed Vendors List, as well as any informative material (e.g. What is a Group Buy?).
Note: I cannot simply copy-and-paste any time there's an edit to one thread or the other. For one, the different text editors are used. For another, the threads are organized differently.
Currently, the content of [Section 6.0] Online Vendors and Marketplaces is slightly outdated. What the refreshed Vendors List offers over this one:
Table of Contents + Internal Links: Navigation should be significantly easier compared to this thread. Specific sections may be found without relying on the reader's ability to CTRL + F.
Markdown Table: Stores are organized and separated by columns, rather than messy bullet-points.
Strictly On-Topic: Replies to the main thread are focused on ongoing, up-to-date discounts, promos, giveaways, and custom keeb news. No extraneous comments, chit-chat (there's another thread for that), or memes.

I've intended to separate Section [6.0] from the main thread for a long time, but there's a specific direction I desired to take it in -- a no-nonsense thread that remains relevant and on-topic with up-to-date material, without frivolous, meme-y comments. I'm afraid threads here have a habit of being populated with unfocused, off-topic chit-chat, and unfortunately, as a plebian forum user, I haven't the ability to relocate off-topic material away from my thread. I'll accept that LTT'ers will do as they do, and take my intentions elsewhere.

Also, the thread over at A.S.S. is easier to organize (e.g. table of contents, internal links, markdown table), and its tabulated organization is closer to what I originally envisioned and desired the Vendors List to be. Editing is less annoying as well. The sheer length of this thread on LTT, or possibly the number of links crammed into one place, makes editing difficult and buggy -- the text editor sometimes freezes up completely and at random (i.e. it's difficult to replicate the issue), and it's fear-inducing and frustrating.

TLDR: I'm moving my Vendors List to A.S.S. and will update that one consistently. The existing one is currently outdated and will be yeeted on July 31, 2021.

    Smol Disclaimer:
'Chew owns a Mode Designs First Edition Eighty (Eighty #391, of the 450 × FE Eightys in existence ), so even though 60%s aren’t my market, I will still definitely be biased in Mode Designs’s favor. I enjoy their product and their atmosphere, and they left a very positive first impression when I interacted with them.

Friendos have commented that the SixtyFive is expensive, for a compact keeb at $299+. I can’t say that I agree with that statement, but I also don’t think my disagreement holds much weight (being biased and all).

To explain my perspective, the First Edition Eighty was $650 for me, but like the SixtyFive, offered an all-aluminum chassis, a mirrored finish for its bottom weight/chassis, choice of hot-swappability, compatibility with QMK/VIA for re-mappable layouts/additional layers/custom macros, gasket stack mounting, on top of being a limited-run product (only 450 made), being in-stock (not locked in a Group Buy or Pre-Order), and being in the custom TKL niche.

The Eighty (not First Editions) was priced at $480+, and offered all of the First Edition, sans the mirrored butt and limited run / in-stock dealio (it was Pre-Order), plus more colorways.

The niche bit is important, as there are significantly fewer custom TKL kits than compact kits on the market (especially in late 2020, when I bought my keeb), and, as a grossly simplified rule in economics, goods in the high demand but low supply category tend to carry higher price tags.

So, while the SixtyFive is probably more expensive than other all-aluminum, QMK-compatible compact keebs (KBDfans should have a number of competitive options), it is the most affordable keeb that Mode Designs has offered to date. I will concede that judging pricing between keebs with different form factors is a bit invalid, but the basis for that comparison is the SixtyFive takes heavy inspiration from the Eighty’s design. In my eyes, the SixtyFive is like the Eighty’s smaller sibling, so a comparatively lower price tag, on top of more versatile features (e.g. mounting styles, ISO layout, chassis), seems justified. Also, I’ve yet to see another compact keeb offering the sexy stunning mirrored finishes that Mode Designs does. 😎

If you're gaming on it and want 144 HZ you will need something with a discreet graphics card or get an external GPU. Except maybe for a game like League of Legends
