And remember that the heat from the computer warms up the room, so in the winter time you earn the energy that way.

I remember the day when it all started...

It was when I was 10 years old. I was at church. I was asked to go get something out of the back closet. When I walked in there I noticed they had a Dell desktop just sitting there. I had always looked at computers and thought they were cool, "these weird things with screens and a bunch of text." I always noticed that people seem to look more professional working off a laptop rather than pen and paper. So I got the stuff they asked me to get out the closet. (cant remmeber I think it was like cups, or paper towels or something) and I went and asked my pastor about that PC in the back(I had known my pastor for a long time, he was like an uncle to me, grew up around him). He said that that PC was broken and then, to my surprise he asked if I wanted it. I thought about it for a second, being that I knew nothing about PC's and that it was broken and I had to fix it. I told him yes, that I wanted it and I would take it home and mess with it.

So that day I took it home. When my dad saw it, he gave me his old desktop screen he had in the attic. And at the church I found near the PC an extra keyboard, which with Permission, I took. I plugged everything in to the PC(except a mouse, which I didnt have) and turned it on. It came on, and I looked puzzly at it, being that they told me that it was broken. Then when windows finally booted up I immediately noticed that the screen looked very strange, lots of lines and it looked fuzzy. me, knowing nothing went ask my dad. He said he didnt know. This was when I realized that I would have to figure it out myself.

I wasn't allowed to use the internet then. So I had to find an alternative. I looked for days and days trying to figure out something that I could learn with. until finally, one day while I was playing with my playstation-portable, I did. The PSP had wi-fi, which I learned then meant internet access. One night while in bed, i was able to get on some unlocked neighbors wifi and (oddly enough knowing what google was) went on google. I spent hours that night searching and found out it was this thing I had never heard of: the video card. When I finally learned it was an internal part and where exactly it was, I opened up the computer and found it. I noticed it didnt look weird or anything, it was just "there." so i closed the PC and did some more research. My research led me to these things called "drivers" (again in perspective that I didnt know what anything was then) So I went on the PC and after hours and hours of messing around, I found the driver settings. I fooled around with different, generic drivers that came with windows XP until I finally found one that made the screen look perfect. It was this moment that I realized how much I loved PC's, I had never before worked so hard on anything in my life.

I used that PC for a while, being that I couldn't get on the internet at all because of my parents I learned everything I could about windows. I dug through the entire system and at nights I would look up all the new stuff I would find and learn what they do. When I got bored of that, I opened the computer and took it all apart and put it back together. I learned what every part did and had a basic knowledge of how the parts worked. I learned what all the I/O ports were called and did lots of research at night on that PSP in bed. before I knew it, I knew everything about that one PC that I could possibly learn, or at least comprehend as a 10-11 year old.

One day at church, I got a small job helping someone with his websites. My parents let me have internet access for that one particular thing. And my job was to help this man set up a bunch of blogs, which he used to put ads on and make money, he also used them to sell some products with the amazon ad thing. It was after a few months of doing this, that I was bored one day when I had no work to do. I looked up computer games. At first all I found was flash games, but after a while of looking I found out that you can play console games on a PC. I didnt have much money, but I looked around for some game that I could play that would actually be interesting. I think I had found one called combat arms(which still exists I believe) but I didnt really like it, and I also wondered why the PC ran slow when I would play the game. I found out that there was PC parts you could buy to make the PC faster while playing games. I didnt have money then so i ignored it.

Then one day, while I was in school one of my friends decided to show me minecraft on his laptop. I was instantly hooked. he showed me how to get minecraft "free" (which I later realized was illegal) and I started playing. I played that game all the time, and it ran really badly on my desktop. That year the school gave everyone free laptops for the semester, and I found that minecraft ran decently on them. So I played minecraft on there, and pretty much forgot about my desktop for a while, that laptop was the only thing I used. Then I wondered how to play with my friends on minecraft. So I figured out how to make a server. I failed many times, mostly getting stuck on how to port forward a router. When I finally figured that out and got the server working I put the server on my desktop.

Me and my friends would play all the time, and when we decided to go crazy and make the server public to all people of the world, the desktop quickly became overloaded. (it only had 1GB of DDR[1] RAM and a Pentium 4 @ 2.8 GHz i think) Me and my friends pondered on how we could run a better server, without using our laptops because we needed them for school work. I then realized that the bicycle I had got for my 13th birthday that year was jsut sitting in my bedroom. It was an awesome bike, I got it when I got really into cycling and dreamed of having a real road bike. But as that wish faded, I began to not ride the bike anymore and since it was so expensive, I kept it in my bedroom. and it just sat there, gathering dust. I asked my dad if i could sell it, and he said it was fine, and I would be able to keep the money.

I told him I would use the money to buy a awesome PC for our "minecraft server" (he had no clue what it was ) I sold the bike for like $700 I think, and I had about $200 saved up from when I figured out that I would buy a better PC for the server. I bought a cyberpower that year. It was right before I turned 14 or 15 I cant remember. It is the base of my current system now, It had a basic i5-2xxx sandy bridge(i cant remember exact model) a AMD 7770 graphics card. (brand new when I got it 7xxx series had just come out, and I was going to run the server and ply on the server at the same time he he) a biostar TZ77B motherboard(brand new, just when the ivy bridge stuff was coming out, i bought a sandy bridge proccessor and a ivy bridge based motherboard. A 500GB hitachi hard drive(i thought it was humungous comapred to the 80GB drive I used in the old dell. And a cheap 600 watt power supply(i knew nothing about power supplies then). Oh! and a Asetek? 120mm liquid cooler(about equivelent to a corsair H60. The whole thing was housed in a cheap thermatake case.

I thought that PC was a beast. I bought a 19" sceptre screen with it(so much better than the old 15" screen my dad gave me, in fact im using it now as I type this. And this computer, with its 4GB of RAM and way better proccessor than that pentium 4 ran the server awesome. My friends and I were so happy. I eventually put new parts into the computer, like more RAM(it now has 12GB) and a i5-3570k(which I bought to give one of my friends my basic i5 for a really good price) when that friend built his PC I eventually let him have the minecraft server because I got more involved with Linux and other crazy games like BF3 and a lot of steam games.

I also learned a lot about networking and now approaching 16 years in a few days I want to be either a IT systems administrator, or a IT network administrator as a carrer. And I look back on all of this and see that it all started with one old dell PC sitting in a closet, gathering dust. Amazing stuff right there.

sorry for the long story, I did my best to shorten it up but I love giving details. I hope you have the time to read it. Thank you for making this post @thereadysparrow !

EDIT: I think I'm going to edit this and turn it in as a paper for English class LOL. It's definetly long enough
