  1. I looked it up and the actual name is FancyZones. its not super flexible but it makes it do you can change the default snap locations and sizes. it's a part of power toys: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/powertoys/fancyzones
  2. thanks! i'll try display fusion, otherwise i'll just stick with power toys advanced window snapping. I think this is the option i'll be going with then, i usually have a chatting app, a browser, a pdf reader and then 2 or 3 windows of what i'm actually working on(IDE, game engine, CAD program, etc)
  3. oooh someone who actually runs that! I was heavilly considering that. probably with a slightly cheaper display than a CX tho. do you find youself having multiple windows next to eachother on the 48 inch most of the time?
  4. unfortunatly i don't have space for 3x ultrawides next to eachother. 3x 24" is about the max i can fit next to eachother. if i went 3x ultrawide it would be 2 next to eachother and one on top
  5. Hello, i'm looking for what monitors I should upgrade to from my current setup. I currently have 3 Dell 22" 16:10 1050p 50hz monitors in a row, and another row of two stacked on top. This works quite well but i'd like a little more pixels to make small text more readable, and also just an upgrade away from CFL backlights and maybe a bit better color. I should mention I don't play games on this setup, it's purely for work related things. I don't have much more space to use, but i could probably upgrade to the same config just with 1440p 24" screens(I haven't found any 22" 1440p monitors). however, monitor tech has changed a lot in the last 10 years, and i haven't kept up. These are some configurations i've considered after some research, other suggestions welcome: 5x 24" 1440p, row of 3 and row of 2 3x 21:9 1440p, two next to each other and one on top. 2x 32:9, stacked huge(idk, 45" or smth) 4K tv with maybe a vertical 16:9 next to it 2x slight smaller huge 16:9 4K monitors(32" maybe?)(i like this one the least I think) I would also like to ask how the windows experience is for you having multiple windows on one display. I've gotten really used to just having 5 full screen windows open all the time and not having to deal with lining them up or resizing them. Can I for example just split an ultrawide in to 2 monitors as far as windows is concerned? i know nvidia allows you to use multiple monitors as one display. What monitor setup do you all use for having multiple programs open and visible at once?
  6. it means the PSU starts up. it doesn't mean it's working properly, for that you would have to at least measure all the voltages on the pins with a DMM, preferable under load.
  7. oh it's for sure not the memory itself, it's the cpu/chipset/imcthat's no keping up.
  8. well you could also skip this update... otherwise, I suggest you learn to read registry flags
  9. try an XMP profile that is higher then stock but not the full 3200
  10. he paid for XMP, it should atleast run a little better then stock, even if the cpu unstable at the full 3200
  11. sanity check, is the SATA power plugged in? and the USB cable? and are the fans plugged into the splitter and that into the pump block? and is the pump block plugged into the CPU fan header?
  12. well, not shorting out any pins other than the green wire to a black wire. if the fan spins, you're good.
  13. yes! that sounds great for the desktop, do you happen to know anything about laptops?
  14. great, I'm mainly going to do pretty light gaming anyway, running older games and stuff. if I can run Fallout 4 at 30fps 1080p that would be GREAT, but as long as it runs my beloved hl2 at 60 I'm fine
  15. thx! that was the thing i was most looking for, i don't really know how to rate cpu's inter-generation b/c the IPC improvements, but if you say it's a great cpu i'll go ahead and order those, unless somebody says i should spend way more on the laptop.
  16. read the first paragraph: " So I have about 1000€ budget to get new computers for primarily school use. what would you spend it on? I need a laptop for sure, and a desktop would be nice. next year I'm starting an engineering course so I would like it to do cad work as well, some light gaming too. the laptop is just a general laptop for in class."
  17. So I have about 1000€ budget to get new computers for primarily school use. what would you spend it on? I need a laptop for sure, and a desktop would be nice. next year I'm starting an engineering course so I would like it to do cad work as well, some light gaming too. the laptop is just a general laptop for in class, I really like my parent's ThinkPad carbon X1 but it's a little underpowered so I wanted at least those specs, but with better graphics. I had a great experience with Thinkpad's in the past, so that's why I'm heavily leaning towards this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad-W540-15-6-FHD-2-90GHz-CORE-i7-4600M-16GB-240GB-SSD-W8PRO-WEBCAM/372403350350?epid=206993837&hash=item56b4f82b4e:g:td0AAOSwwf1bdG~R I'm not sure if it's a good price for a used one but for a laptop with those specs, it sounds really cheap. should be faster than the 8gig 5500U with HD 5500 graphics. esp the Quadro with it's better than normal cad performance is a selling point. if we include shipping that leaves me with 700€ for a desktop. mind, I have a couple screen and mice and keyboards laying around so I don't need those anymore. again, I do very light gaming but I'd like mainly a workstation/web browsing machine(i'm a tab hoarder so I like having a ton of ram). to eBay, we went and I got this config: 2 of these 6 cores at 3ghz: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Xeon-X5675-3-06GHz-Six-Core-SLBYL-AT80614006696AA-Processor-w-Grease/272516757168?epid=109625040&hash=item3f7343b6b0:g:sLoAAOSwMNxXYSrv a fitting mobo with tons of SATA ports, some PCI-E and from a reputable brand, supermicro: https://www.ebay.com/itm/SuperMicro-X8DTL-IF-Dual-LGA1366-Socket-Motherboard-DDR3-with-IO-Shield/153027052841?epid=77578649&hash=item23a11f8529:g:iigAAOSw8b1aLpS0 32gb of ECC DDR3 ram: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Axiom-32GB-4x8GB-DDR3-ECC-Server-Memory-12345-0028230-Grade-A/273385263132?hash=item3fa708101c:g:fuMAAOSwqxZbYz0U an RX580(this is very subject to change, depends on where second-hand prices go after the 2080 launch): https://www.ebay.com/itm/MSI-Radeon-RX-580-Gaming-X-4G-Video-Card-GPU-FREE-SHIPPING/302845059812?hash=item4682f8e2e4%3Ag%3A9awAAOSwwVpZx5R0&LH_BIN=1 and at last, a psu(i don't buy second hand psu's, ever): https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-Modular-Warranty-Supply-210-GQ-0750-V1/dp/B017HA3RGE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1534929264&sr=8-3&keywords=power+supply+750w&dpID=41FFjiWXQ7L&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch this should be everything i need to get a working desktop, right? (I know it's missing a case) am i even looking in the right direction with older server cpu's? this looks better then any new machine i could get for the price...... should i just spend all the money on better laptop? or, just get a non-thinkpad laptop? any sugestions are appriciated!
  18. i know about store MI, i run it on my Linux server at school and indeed it's a good idea to run on a desktop if you have amd. as for the case i have a ton of old apple computers laying around, I'll mod one into taking this pc. maybe my powermac G5 or my emac G4
  19. that looks nice goldenlag, but I can't buy a GPU for 200€. i like streetguru's build, tho i'd use a different case and a bigger drive everyone seems to agree i need to buy new hardware, though i thought getting a 900 series would be more bang for the buck than getting 10 series, same goes for older intel.
  20. so I need an upgrade to my setup. I have no idea what to buy, I haven't even decided on a laptop or desktop yet. I'm a student who just needs to be able to do general office stuff + CAD modeling(no rendering or simulation), have decent wifi and do some very light gaming. like my GTX 770m is keeping up almost good enough, the only game I want to play it doesn't run well enough at 1080p is Fallout 4. I don't have a ton of money but no real set budget, but under 800€ would be nice. the main reason I want to upgrade is that my iMac doesn't have enough storage, I don't really want to open it up and my father is willing to buy it for about as much as I paid for it. the graphics card(that 770m) is also just a tiny bit lacking. also, the Lenovo x1 carbon that I had long-term borrowed from someone really got me into considering a laptop, the portability was just awesome. if I build a desktop I'm definitely going to use used parts, maybe even some old server gear. I'm very familiar with hardware, I have built PC's in the past, modded laptops built my own case, so I'm not worried about having to tinker with it or mod it. while i have an idea on what GPU and RAM I need, I don't know what sort of CPU I should get. the older gen Intel stuff is looking pretty good, like 5th gen core i5's or something like that any ideas? what would you buy? you can vote in the poll or leave a suggestion as a comment
  21. nothing to worry about if it's not coming back, computer hardware just sometimes does weird shit
  22. the car might not have enough power to charge the laptop
  23. there is no valid bootable drive found. so either there is no os on the drive, the drive is dead or there is an issue with the part of pc reading the disk.
