  1. it means the PSU starts up. it doesn't mean it's working properly, for that you would have to at least measure all the voltages on the pins with a DMM, preferable under load.
  2. oh it's for sure not the memory itself, it's the cpu/chipset/imcthat's no keping up.
  3. well you could also skip this update... otherwise, I suggest you learn to read registry flags
  4. try an XMP profile that is higher then stock but not the full 3200
  5. he paid for XMP, it should atleast run a little better then stock, even if the cpu unstable at the full 3200
  6. sanity check, is the SATA power plugged in? and the USB cable? and are the fans plugged into the splitter and that into the pump block? and is the pump block plugged into the CPU fan header?
  7. well, not shorting out any pins other than the green wire to a black wire. if the fan spins, you're good.
  8. yes! that sounds great for the desktop, do you happen to know anything about laptops?
  9. great, I'm mainly going to do pretty light gaming anyway, running older games and stuff. if I can run Fallout 4 at 30fps 1080p that would be GREAT, but as long as it runs my beloved hl2 at 60 I'm fine
  10. thx! that was the thing i was most looking for, i don't really know how to rate cpu's inter-generation b/c the IPC improvements, but if you say it's a great cpu i'll go ahead and order those, unless somebody says i should spend way more on the laptop.
  11. read the first paragraph: " So I have about 1000€ budget to get new computers for primarily school use. what would you spend it on? I need a laptop for sure, and a desktop would be nice. next year I'm starting an engineering course so I would like it to do cad work as well, some light gaming too. the laptop is just a general laptop for in class."
  12. So I have about 1000€ budget to get new computers for primarily school use. what would you spend it on? I need a laptop for sure, and a desktop would be nice. next year I'm starting an engineering course so I would like it to do cad work as well, some light gaming too. the laptop is just a general laptop for in class, I really like my parent's ThinkPad carbon X1 but it's a little underpowered so I wanted at least those specs, but with better graphics. I had a great experience with Thinkpad's in the past, so that's why I'm heavily leaning towards this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad-W540-15-6-FHD-2-90GHz-CORE-i7-4600M-16GB-240GB-SSD-W8PRO-WEBCAM/372403350350?epid=206993837&hash=item56b4f82b4e:g:td0AAOSwwf1bdG~R I'm not sure if it's a good price for a used one but for a laptop with those specs, it sounds really cheap. should be faster than the 8gig 5500U with HD 5500 graphics. esp the Quadro with it's better than normal cad performance is a selling point. if we include shipping that leaves me with 700€ for a desktop. mind, I have a couple screen and mice and keyboards laying around so I don't need those anymore. again, I do very light gaming but I'd like mainly a workstation/web browsing machine(i'm a tab hoarder so I like having a ton of ram). to eBay, we went and I got this config: 2 of these 6 cores at 3ghz: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Xeon-X5675-3-06GHz-Six-Core-SLBYL-AT80614006696AA-Processor-w-Grease/272516757168?epid=109625040&hash=item3f7343b6b0:g:sLoAAOSwMNxXYSrv a fitting mobo with tons of SATA ports, some PCI-E and from a reputable brand, supermicro: https://www.ebay.com/itm/SuperMicro-X8DTL-IF-Dual-LGA1366-Socket-Motherboard-DDR3-with-IO-Shield/153027052841?epid=77578649&hash=item23a11f8529:g:iigAAOSw8b1aLpS0 32gb of ECC DDR3 ram: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Axiom-32GB-4x8GB-DDR3-ECC-Server-Memory-12345-0028230-Grade-A/273385263132?hash=item3fa708101c:g:fuMAAOSwqxZbYz0U an RX580(this is very subject to change, depends on where second-hand prices go after the 2080 launch): https://www.ebay.com/itm/MSI-Radeon-RX-580-Gaming-X-4G-Video-Card-GPU-FREE-SHIPPING/302845059812?hash=item4682f8e2e4%3Ag%3A9awAAOSwwVpZx5R0&LH_BIN=1 and at last, a psu(i don't buy second hand psu's, ever): https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-Modular-Warranty-Supply-210-GQ-0750-V1/dp/B017HA3RGE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1534929264&sr=8-3&keywords=power+supply+750w&dpID=41FFjiWXQ7L&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch this should be everything i need to get a working desktop, right? (I know it's missing a case) am i even looking in the right direction with older server cpu's? this looks better then any new machine i could get for the price...... should i just spend all the money on better laptop? or, just get a non-thinkpad laptop? any sugestions are appriciated!
  13. i know about store MI, i run it on my Linux server at school and indeed it's a good idea to run on a desktop if you have amd. as for the case i have a ton of old apple computers laying around, I'll mod one into taking this pc. maybe my powermac G5 or my emac G4
