I secretly hope to see a return to forums.  Where only dozens or maybe a few hundred people at most could be enough to sustain a vibrant community.  We instead had many, many, MANY forums like that, rather than relying on everything being one massive website.  This was far more sustain table, because you could run a forum out of pocket as a hobby and it wasn't a big deal.  All of these massive global websites are expensive as hell to run and big investors are starting to realize that they don't' actually make money.

However, I don't think this is what the majority of people want  They want the dopamine hit from going 'viral' and getting hundreds, thousands, or even more likes from absolute strangers across the globe.  They don't want 10 reponses from a small passionate group, they want it big and impersonal, with the conversation being mostly one way even.

Reddit is good for sharing interesting articles or photos or whatever with each other for fun, but for anything that benefits with actual discussion, or asking for other peoples opinions or asking for help, its super terrible.

For asking questions in some form, being it help or opinions from others about something, Reddit is terrible, especially in subreddits that have any kind of popularity. Reason is that once a topic is posted, unless it gets lots up upvotes it will basically be gone after few hours or a day depending on subreddits size because it gets to far down, even if people continue to have comment back and fourth. To get any use of it you short of have to post and be available the next few hours, and for the right person to see it you might even have to delete and repost sometimes after a few days on different time.

Traditional forum is way better in that way, as topics stay on first page as long as there is new comments on it, they dont die because they are old but rather they die because few comments, when the commenting is done if you will. Reddit prioritizes things that is just new way to much.

Those reasons makes it also poor for discussions, but also ranking of comments inside a thread, if you are a few hours late, noone will see your comment basically, while in a traditional forum people are probably more likely to see whats going on in the last few pages than changing sorting to new in Reddit.

Reddit have a benefit when it comes to sharing funny things or links and stuff tho, where the use is more of what is funnest or interesting and hiding things that arent funny or whatever tho.

OLED doesn't have a backlight so won't have those issues.

In my experience, my own monitor that is not a gaming monitor but more like a colour accurate monitor, from LG, does not have much of that kind of things at all. So not all IPS monitors is that at all.

Tho I can not point towards some that I know won't have it.

You can't based on one photo to distinguish the color look. This is too wrong as you might actually getting the worst output.

Mihle reacted to leadeater in Nvidia CEO Says Intel's Test Chip Results For Next-Gen Process Are Good
Sure but you haven't actually stated in what way is it unwieldy and how it's actually a problem. ARM too has deprecated status instructions and extensions still in it and still present in ARM based products so why don't we equally apply the same critiques there?

x86 did it before Apple ARM. You're treating one singular way to do Multi Chip Modules (MCM) as the only way or the right way or the best way regardless of other factors like cost. AMD has gone through two iterations of MCM designs, full chip MCM and chiplet MCM.

EPYC current has up to 13 total chips in a single package, Intel is looking at doing the same very soon in their own different way (EMIB and Foveros).

So if you are basing this on being the future then that is already x86 and they did it first, not ARM.

Even then I could bring up the distant past like the Pentium Pro (1995) or Core 2 Quad (2006) being other examples for multi chip (MCM) CPUs. So I'm honestly not seeing your logic here because it has happened with x86, is current now and there are upcoming products and architectures featuring this.

All I'm doing is critiquing your assessments and reasonings because I think you aren't really looking at things very well or evenly, I'm just not hearing anything that is actually applicable or really a real problem with x86.

As far as what Apple did with the Ultra products, that was and is the most expensive way to bond chips with the lowest yields and simply cannot be implemented on product families as wide as what Intel and AMD have without making it cheaper. Intel Foveros is a next generation method of this that is more cost effective. We got it from Apple because it was paired with an end product and return on investment was gained through a holistic and complete product cycle. An $80 boxed retail CPU just couldn't feature such a costly technology.

Was the coil whine from the GPU in the first place? PSUs can do it too, although I don't think I've noticed on decent ones. Only cheap unbranded ones.

Think about what coil whine is. You're converting power from one voltage to another, and how much you convert depends on how much is in use. Slight variations in output voltage on a PSU could affect the switching rate in the converter, and change the sound that way. Perhaps pushing it above or below the range the whine is active at. Maybe it could be something to do with ripple from PSU too. These are possible mechanisms but can't tell without actually measuring it.

Mihle reacted to wanderingfool2 in Can your ISP still see search history even if you are using a VPN?
No, but for that matter neither can an ISP really; as a general rule when you are on a site that is using https (which pretty much is all of them these days) and the site uses the secure connection through-out (which pretty much makes up the majority of sites) the ISP really can't see too much aside from what IP addresses you are communicating with (at which point they could figure out a website if it's not some shared IP address for the service)

An issue with a lot of VPN stuff I think is that it oversells in what it's actually doing.  I personally wouldn't trust a VPN much more than I would trust an ISP.  As an example, many claim that they don't keep logs...but if any of them also say they host in Canada they are doing 1 of 2 things.  Breaking the law or they are keeping logs. (Unless the law changed again without me knowing)

Edit: To give a bit more information, when you use a VPN you are effectively encrypting your traffic and sending it to the VPN which then decrypts it and sends it on it's way...which is why an ISP wouldn't be able to see anything if you use a VPN.  With that said whatever the ISP would be able to see, your VPN can now see.  A VPN does have it's purposes though, if you were to be at lets say a coffee shop using their wifi a VPN can add an extra layer of protection (as while most do use secure connections not all...and there are other types of attacks against that kind of traffic).

Another aspect is that it could be used in events where there are lots of people, so many that the speed of 5G might take a hit. And you can't really be sure before going to a place what the speed will be.

Personally, I like EV content. I'm pretty big into cars, and prefer ICE cars overall, but it's cool to see how EV tech is progressing. EV's can still be cool. Just because you blindly hate them doesn't mean everyone else does. The car guy side of me isn't a huge fan of them, but still likes them because their performance can be impressive (very jealous of Linus's EV Porsche). And the tech-y side of me thinks they're awesome because there's so much new and advanced tech involved. It's something new to come to mass production within my lifetime.

What would you actually want to become more modern? I'd say the look of the Forum is pretty modern. I could try to become more responsive and get loaded with animations, but I don't think that would make it more functional in any way.

Mihle reacted to LAwLz in Google plans to delete accounts that haven't been used in over 2 years, including YouTube content
This is worrying, but I doubt Google would do anything super drastic.
My guess is that 9to5Google are correct that they won't delete Youtube accounts that have videos uploaded, and I really hope that's true.

It's one thing to delete private data that isn't being accessed anymore, but it's another thing to delete public data that others access (but not necessarily the creator). The former is okay in my opinion, but the latter can do a lot of harm.

Since it seems like Google will take a staged and fairly reasonable approach to this (for example deleting accounts that were created but never even used) my guess is that they will not just mass purge Youtube videos.
I mean, if we are being reasonable, it doesn't make sense for Youtube to delete for example all videos from TotalBiscuit (youtuber who died in 2018) just because he hasn't logged in to his account. Those videos are still getting thousands of views ever day and as a result, are generating revenue for Youtube.

My guess is that the biggest impact this will have is that we'll see people's subscriber numbers drop like a rock. MKBHD might have 16.8 million subscribers, but my guess is that a large chunk of those are inactive accounts that will get deleted.

Mihle got a reaction from Mark Kaine in What are good temps for the CPU & GPU while gaming or just under high loads?
That's not actually how it works, if it's higher temperature, it would mean your fan spins less fast, and that means less noise.

Let's say your CPU is at 70c stable at one fan RPM, if you let it become 80c instead because you run the fan a little less, that fan produce less noise.
As long as a CPU or GPU survives the first while, it's rare for the chip itself to die, it's 99% either the mobo or in GPUs case, the board it's attached to(and other things on it.

Mihle reacted to MageTank in Discord plans to move to unique usernames from the numeric discriminators
Not entirely sure I understand the necessity to make this change. I've never heard people complain about the current name + numbers configuration and they already made it easy to invite people to groups with links as well as sending friend invites via links and emails. If anything, I see this causing a lot more harm than good as people end up having to change their name and you have a Discord group full of names you no longer recognize.

Also @Silverflame, this was a very good news read. No cringe pun for a title, great format and several sources to read through. 10/10, would read again.
