  3. Ok, so heres one that has absolutely wrecked my head for the whole weekend. (please excuse the long winded explanation, but im hoping something i think may be irrelevant may be relevant to someone in helping me to solve this) I have a PC (which is use as a plex server) which has 5 HDD (purely for storage) and 1 SSD (C/windows) On Friday i needed to add a new HDD (500gb i had spare) as i was suffering for space. I connected the new drive and booted into windows. Using Mini Partition Wizard (free edition) i formatted the drive for storage (it was previously a windows drive in a different machine) While doing this is noticed that one of my other drives (Disk 2 in the pic attached) was an MBR drive (apart from my SSD) so i converted it to GPT. I also noticed that 2 of my drives (disks 5 and 6 in the pic attached) had unallocated space (128mb) at the start of each drive so i expanded them to use the full drive. I applied my changes and everything was fine for a while until i began moving some files to the new drive i had added. Windows explorer froze, so after waiting and no response i opened task manager and clicked restart on windows explorer to no avail. It closed windows explorer but wouldnt reopen, i tried run+ explorer.exe and still no joy so naturally i restarted the pc...... expect nope. Heres where the problem is. The pc not only will not boot but freezes on the splash screen with the board logo and does not repond to keyboard commands (F2 or Delete for bios, or even ctrl+alt+delete to reboot). After a LOT of trial and error i finally found that when my 4TB drive is connected (disk 6 in the pic attached) either through sata OR in a USB connected caddy, this freeze happens. Powered in the caddy or powered from a seperate PSU from another pc, no change connected by Sata, esata or usb, no change connected with all other drives OR with only the ssd connected, no change same drive connected to another pc, no issue switch on the caddy after boot, no issue Checked drive health and performance with HDD sentinel, 100% Reinstalled windows, no change Rebuilt MBR on SSD, no change reset/clear bios In conclusion if the 4tb drive is on and connected to the pc on boot, the system freezes at the mobo splash screen. the only way to boot is to start the drive after boot. The issue here is 2-3 streams of content from that same drive at the same time, bottle neck and stutter so leaving it connected by usb is not an answer. Any ideas or possible solutions would be greatly appreciated. (please consider i dont have the storage space to move the content from the to attempt some fix)
  4. Im not sure what your current level of knowledge is but if you are looking for a starting point i can personally highly recommend CompTIA A+ as an introduction to.... well..... all the things..... its a great well rounded course that will cover some of everything from hardware and software. Have a look online for the course materials and if you feel you're happy to do so after a while certification is easy (most places have centres for sitting exams for online accreditation). Professor James Messer is fantastic at delivering the course material and has a website and a youtube channel. From there if you want to specialise in one area you will have a greater understanding of how it all works and the terminology so researching online will be a lot easier. Also as mentioned above the techquickie series of videos from the LTT group are brilliant.
  5. Thanks. If i cant get this to work i will look into something like the odroid. I will get a mini usb to hdmi cable (no harm to have one for my phone anyway) and see if i can display the phone on the tv but im doubting that will work to start because if i connect the device to my laptop and try to connect to it using adb incant find it and it appears in my device manager as an unknown device (despite the fact that my drivers etc are set up correctly as my current phone is another nexus 6 and i use the laptop regularly for reflashing stock Android if i have rom or firmware issues and i want to rollback to factory firmware) this leads me to believe that the device is not booting correctly and im thinking it is because the lcd is damaged, maybe there is some POST like check done and when its detecting the screen doesnt work it doesnt boot. So basically im thinking to remove the board and use it i would need some kind of bypassing hack/workaround electronically to get past this....... the software side of things im fine its the electronics/hardware side im stumped
  6. Thanks for the reply. With reference to the pi and using kodi, im not a huge fan of kodi. I have a home media centre pc with plex server running and i plan i using the plex app on the android tv box to play my media. i also use other services such as netflix so this is why android is appealing to me as i can install the appropriate app easily for anything i want to do. I know there are alternatives in kodi like using the plexbmc addon to play plex but ive tried these and other kodi addons and im not a fan. i think native android apps are a preferable option. Regarding the nexus im not sure but i will try a simple hdmi adapter and if that works brilliant but i doubt i will be so lucky. I believe there will be some kind of electronic workaround needed (why i posted here) to make the board boot without a working lcd.
  7. Hi eveyone. First post here. I'm not 100% sure if this is the right spot for this but here goes. I have been looking into building my own custom homemade android tv box. I have been looking into using a mini pc, maybe a pi 3 but so far from my research it seems the pi 3 is not really rocking android too well and from personal experience with android phones and custom roms i doubt it will work too well, i dont think 1gb of ram of enough for modern lollipop+ roms and the graphics chip in the pi is a bit weak for my liking. I have however got a Motorola Nexus 6. It was my phone, when it was 3 days old i dropped it and smashed the screen :/..... ive since replaced it with another. When i got my new one i tried to replace the glass on the broken one and the lcd ripped in the process. So my question is (not sure if its even possible) but does anyone here know of a way i can use the board from this phone (which i know to be in perfect working order) in the same way people use a pi or other such board to create my custom android tv box. I would love to get some use from this board and if i can get it to work then im theory a custom Rom for this device should provide me with a rock solid base for my android tv. Thanks in advance and im also open to any suggestions for alternatives (and i dont mind spending some money on this for complimentary components)
