4.9 ghz on h100i using asus ez tuning wizard runs at 76 C. I dont think the 6700k can reach that overclock

If you have the money go for the 7600k, you will be able to overclock it down the line and keep it from getting old.

Franpadi got a reaction from Spudbilly in I3 i5 or i7???
There is almost no difference between old and new intel cpus. He already has 3rd generation compatible MoBo, so getting a newer cpu will mean replacing the MoBo and maybe RAM. If you are in college, stick with the core i3 or i5. If you are gonna make a living out of it, get the core i7.

dual channel vs quad channel makes no difference and with 2x8 or 1x16 you can add more later

the i7 will probably hold up better than your i5 and you will be fine with a 1080. something like a overclocked 6700k may give you a couple frames more but its much more expensive too.
    there will be no bottleneck!
