I am furthering an aspect of IBMs research from the 80s on rapid response times and I wanted to know Linus if i can barrow your LED thing from Free-sync vs G-Sync input lag comparison.
Background
I found the research from the 80s in rapid response very interesting and I wanted to expand that study to an extent. It was disappointing not seeing 100ms or less response times. But this was the 80s and there were other preconceived notions, which I still see people believing more than 30 years later, sadly. It kinda makes sense they never went that low given the facts of that time period.
I am researching the difference 60hz LCD vs 120hz LCD vs 120Hz LCD ULMB vs 120hz OLED screens and their impact of perceived response times.* I am also going to throwing in input lag for added detail given the fact it may show some other hidden insight and requires very little extra work to test and log.
With Windows 7 fade-in enabled it is ~250ms but no fade is ~50ms from my initial recordings. That is 3 frames vs 17 frames on a 60hz screen.
(BTW i am not just testing windows OS. I am looking at other programs as well. It is just the first thing I tested to see what was going on so I can start to formulate a project plan.)
I was shocked that I could actual perceive all 3 frames on the 50ms load speed. I never imagined my eyes and brain could notice separate frames at that speed, which made me want to test and research higher hz with various display technology added into the testing to see how they affect response times and user experience.
This is something I have noticed and is worth a good study but far outside my scope and resources. I don't have the resources to test how all this actually affects productivity (it does given what IBM has already proven in the 80s). I only have enough time and tools to show there is a tangible difference between them. (I am lone rangering this after all)
Additionally, from my initial experiments with this I have noticed something in particular and I would love to see a study on the impacts of transitions vs instant pop up and how it affects human attention. I know from my experience sometimes fast 3 frame pop ups can be a little jarring and distracting vs a smooth transition. So there must be a "perfect blend" of the two. What is that? Not a clue and I don't have the resources to even dare test that but it must exist and deserves a real study to find the perfect blend of a smooth transition that is also fast. 50ms vs 250ms is really quite noticeable from my experience, which is why i want to document this.
*I have a separate project being done at the same time that looks at what is the current limitation of modern OSes and programs in terms of computer hardware.
