  1. I was considering similar consolidation of all machines into a rack similar to what Linus did at his old house (don't need a baller big ass rack like at his new one :P) and was looking for something like his old 4U chassis for my main rig and for my server (don't plan for a LAN center ... YET :P) anyways I've found following chassis : https://www.fantec.de/produkte/serverprodukte/19-server-storagegehaeuse/produkt/details/artikel/3214_fantec_tcg_4860x07_1/ https://www.inter-tech.de/produktdetails-17/4U_4129L.html unfortunately both have only 2x120 unlike Linus' custom one but if the 5" bays remain empty that shouldn't obstruct the airflow too much I guess. There's also a really compact one from Silverstone that looks really appealing imho : https://www.silverstonetek.com/en/product/info/server-nas/RM44/ Maybe someone has better recommendations, I'm curious what the @leftheaded will end up with
  2. are you familiar with solutions from Cognex ? They seem to have what you're looking for and we use them pretty often at work - seems like a reliable choice https://www.cognex.com/products/barcode-readers/mobile-solutions
  3. What I meant was to double check if the exact RAM is compatible with this Motherboard, the speeds alone listed on amazon/newegg or other site might be sometimes misleading. here's the link : https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/Z370-GAMING-M5.html#support-mem-5 and on the first glance I didn't see any 4000Mhz RAM from G.Skill on the list... Actually only 4000Mhz RAM they have there is from Team or Corsair. This list contains the RAM modules that are tested by MSI with this Motherboard and CoffeLake CPU, others might work too, but don't have to - or you will end up buying a 4000Mhz memory that will be only able to run at 3800 - not a big difference but well why pay extra for something you can't use, right ?
  4. Hi there, most of your build looks fine to my on the first glance but as you stated in questions there are few things worth double-checking before you order it. 1. You asked about RAM speeds and overclocking, but the first thing you should do is to check your motherboard manufacturers QVL (Qualified Vendor's List) available on the website probably, so that you don't have any unexpected surprises later. When it comes to speeds and latency it does make a difference but it's so small you shouldn't be worried about it with your first build - just look for the highest clocked RAM compatible with your motherboad/cpu that you can fit in your budget and you're good to go 2. Overclocking the CPU is not probably not gonna be a problem, to achieve some little OC you just need to look for some guide or thread somewhere on the internet and you're gonna find some recommended values, although the sillicon lottery plays a role here too. But the 8700K is gonna do just fine for your needs out of the box, you can tinker with it later if you want to. 3. Modular PSU - if you don't want any stock cables you're might want to check out some custom cable vendors' websites i.e. cablemod where you can find full sets in some custom sleeving and they also say for which PSU they can be used for. https://cablemod.com/product-category/basic-cable-kits/?filter_series=e-series 4. Storage - I personally recently upgraded to M.2 drive and I'm amazed by how fast it is - they're still goddam expensive though, and if you need some more space I wouldn't go for it, at least not as your only drive. I got M.2 for system and work, and 1TB SSD for games and some good ol' HDD for backups and random stuff. But I think you'd be just fine with 1 or 2 SSDs (I mean 2 if you want to separate games from work or want to raid them or simply because sometimes 2x500GB SSD can be cheaper than 1x1TB) Nevertheless an SSD is a must imho, M.2 maybe not yet. 5. I'm no expert in MSI motherboards but I'd guess that the main difference between Godlike Gaming and Gaming M5 would be for some HEAVY OC stuff, SLI compatibility, M.2 slots and whatever else that you won't probably need right now, at least not with this build so I guess you're just fine with M5, no need to worry about that. 6. I guess you will be truelly satisfied with your PC if your old rig is like 5 years old and to be honest the late 2017 is right now kinda like early 2018 since AMD pushed a lot of their stuff out and both Intel and Nvidia responded to it in one way or another, so if I had to take a quess I'd say that we're not going to expect a lot of surprises in the upcoming few months and your system is going to be somehow futureproof for the next few years because you're using the latest socket from Intel - that's very unlikely to change in a year, maybe two. You're already on DDR4 and still have room for 2 more sticks if you want to upgrade in the future - all this looks solid. One last thing, if you check the RAM compatibility with your motherboard/cpu and decide if you want to OC or not I would try to use some calculator for the PSU just to be sure that you're giving it enough power to run on (Overclocking can draw lots more power from the PSU than stock). Even if 850 Watt sounds like pretty much I'd reconsider the 80+ Bronze for maybe Silver or Gold, and remember to check how much power can it deliver to which components (had to troubleshoot a friend's build once where he'd get random PC shutdowns during gaming and it came out that his PSU could provide enough power to the CPU to boot and run daily tasks but when it went to TurboBoost the PSU couldn't hold up and the whole system would just turn off) All that said, I hope you enjoy your new build and welcome to the tech world Cheers!
  5. I have the K95 Platinum for a few months now and I love it, the build quality is really premium and you can really feel it. Previously I had Roccat keyboards which were all plastic and I wouldn't go back to a plastic keyboard now. For the switches I chose the MX speed , was kinda funny feeling at the beginning but after I got used to it (2-3 days time) I knew it was the right choice for me -not too clicky like i.e. MX Blue -low distance makes it comfortable if you use your keyboard not only to play but also to work and type a lot (my hands were often tired after few hours working on typical gaming switches which are hard and long to press) -yet there's still enough of the feel to it that I would not press it accidentally anymore also a slight bonus to the K95 is that it comes with a 2-sided wrist rest pad which I find pretty awesome - you don't have to choose whole keyboard depending on whether you preffer pad with grip or slick Hope it helps, cheers

    Alien v1.0

So some new stuff arrived and I will be spending the weekend playing with it a little bit but I guess it might be worth a little update Even tho there's still a lot to do the rig is performing flawlessly and I enjoy every step of this ride to tweak it even more ^^ New stuff : second 1080Ti FE cablemod black/green cable set I know it's still a cable mess but some cable combs should arrive soon and then it will be nice I promise also the only thing I'm missing are some RGB fans right now (still can't decide which one to choose that are available in both 120 and 140 mm ) after that the next big update will be a custom loop - for that I need to do some more research on which reservoir to get and where to place it Now that the second graphics card is in place and running I can finally do some irl measurements So that's it for now. I hope you guys like it so far
  7. but he's right that the Motherboard does not fit the CPU - so that's the most important point to fix first, then we might discuss futher compatibility

    Alien v1.0

So finally one new part arrived and I must say I'm pretty amazed by it's quality.... Corsair K95 Platinum - that aluminium base is really solid and the cherry MX speed are pretty damn nice for someone who like a little of tactile feedback with low force and short strokes. From a few different switches that I've tested at friends these particular ones I'm very happy with and even though it's my first own mechanical keyboard after just 2 hours with it I feel like I'm already used to it and it's great! Some comparison photos and the whole setup view ( there are still some RGB fans missing from the final form of v1 but I will get them soon )

    Alien v1.0

Haha I wish it was LTT it's just personal use but for the sake of not being hated over the forums I will avoid saying the exact purpose of my workload I can just say that CPU power is going to be fairly enough but I might wanna get a second GPU for that, because the workload is heavy on both DRAM and GPU RAM - crazy eh? oh and btw some more benchmark scores:

    Alien v1.0

Well there are SOME reasons behind that but I could propably easily go with 64GB aswell, but for the sake of having the most I could get I went for it It's not like I'm ever gotta have to throw it out to replace it or something, right ?

    Alien v1.0

and the initial build is now complete ! I managed to get the CPU to 4.6Ghz which I think is pretty nice for a 6850K - so far no stability issues, but I will need some more testing to that. Some quick overall benchmarks for some that might be interested : http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/3889763 If some of you are interested in any specific benchmarks let me know, I will try to cover them, althou it's not anything "new" so you've probably seen it all already I didn't OC the GPU yet though, mostly because it's just stock FE and I will play around with it after I get some watercooling for it. incoming photo spam here: PICS OR DIDN'T HAPPEN I know I need some more green stuff to go with (keybaord still in shipping goddammit :F) but I'll get there soon. Also I want to change the fans to green/rgb but I have to wait some for that (all of them are 140's and I can't decide which to get, maybe something new and cool will hit the shelves soon) oh and I know that the HDD area on the bottom is ugly AF (could at least get 2x WD green , right? :P) but I want to move them to the back later on and use this place for my reservoir for now, that's all. Gonna update once something new arrives. so what do you think? lame or not ?

    Alien v1.0

So, while waiting for few minor things to arrive (still missing the keyboard tho :F) I figured that the new build needs a suitable surrounding and my fixed-on-the-fly desk I made right after moving in was looking kinda... "meh" like that : even though I was thigh on budget after purchasing all the core components I managed to pull off something slightly better I hope... + another "semi-scrap" piece of wood for the desk + 4 cheap aluminium legs + borred wood cutter maschine from a friend (the poles make it hard to go wall to wall but with a little bit of manual work I managed to fit it ) and the result was : I think it looks much better this was and I also have some space near the cut outs for the cable managment. but I was still left with loft of crap laying around so a quick search for the cheapest containers that will do the job ended out with this : and last but not least.... since the build and whole setup is going to be green-themed I picked up some old rgb strips scraps and put them together to go along with : so this took me last 2 days but I think it's better to prepare the space before the build so I don't have to deal with that later. Anyways, starting building the v1.0 today gonna post something tomorrow Cheers

    Alien v1.0

Hi guys, so, I've been planning on this for quite a long time now and it's finally here (sort of...) The planning is complete, the parts arrived and I'm about to get building it anytime now It's not the END yet but a START, since I'm planning on getting some more stuff into it, but for now, it's this. I know some people might question the choice of components that I got but it's fine, we have such a great variety of hardware right now that everyone can choose something that suits his/hers needs perfectly (at a pricepoint) and those are my choice, not gonna be sorry about it Considering the fact that my last PC update was back in 2012 or so, this is a really big deal for me and even with X299 incoming I belive it's gonna serve me well PC Part Picker link for those might wanna check it out: Alien 1.0 If you're wondering where did the name came from - this build is going to be heavily green-themed and watercooled with a custom loop later on with possible some nice case modding aswell , hopefully I will get to make it resemble Alien at least a little But that's the future plans for it, for now I want to assemble this thing and get it up and running. Tuning will come after. Hope you'll like it and keep your fingers crossed for me on it please Cheers
  14. I'm going with the 27" but the OP also has some 24 some 27 inches so dunno what he preffers. Matter of price too I guess.
