I got madVR working with MPC-HC, which supports downscaling HDR videos to SDR displays. I guess depending on how the content was done, HDR does seem to have a benefit over the SDR version. However, in another example I have, it appears the colors are saturated too much.

But here's what I pulled from my "gold standard" videos.

In the HDR version, in some scenes, it keeps the color of certain parts of the scene more or less "intact". Like for example in the first images, the HDR version doesn't have a reddish tint the other one does. Though a "glaring" issue if you will, is that the HDR version appears darker. Or rather, the shadows are darker. This is probably more of an artifact that HDR still requires a high-contrast ratio display to work "properly"

So I found out after posting this that HDR videos are best viewed with the monitor's brightness at 100%.

Won't 100% burn out your eyes?  lol

I joke but I think the monitor for my desktop is set at 35% brightness and sometimes it seems a bit bright to me.

If I turned it up to 100% I think it might hurt to look at.  ?

Or would HDR effectively compensate for that issue on a compatible monitor?

Well, the point of HDR is both increased color accuracy and higher contrast ratios. That means you need to have a high maximum brightness value.

I understand that.  My question is if an HDR enabled monitor/tv if HDR vs bright screen would have a result that looked awesome without being like looking at the surface of the sun.

Does that make sense?    I'm sorry if it doesn't.  I don't always seem to phrase questions as well as I mean to.
