Whenever someone says "headphone 'surround sound' sucks", I'm like, "it didn't have to be this way":

although 2 channel audio can mimic surround to an extend i have to say it does have its limits.

For example there is this scene in Marvels Avengers infinity war where Thor tries to re-ignite a furnace by forcing a valve open through an iris thing. in this scene  when he manually opens the valve,  the flames start shooting from the back & the noises starts coming from the just the rear speakers , all the way to the back side of the screen, it was very obvious & beautifully isolated. sounded amazing in theater.

But if you play the exact scene on bluray through your headset(DTS MA,AC3) you will not get the same effect as exact the theater, best i could get close to the same feel was to activate stadium mode in tru theater audio settings in 8 channel mode on Cyberlink powerdvd. it only sounded a bit better & not close to what i heard in the theater.

other media players were replicating it through side stereo which made it sound more like it was coming from the left & right  sides mostly.

You can do excellent surround or even directional audio effects just with two channels in headphones. I think the problem was no one wanted to take advantage of it because it requires more thought than just regular stereo.

@Tech_Dreamer I wouldn't say it has it's limits, because if you can mix using binaural techniques, then it's physically accurate to how you would actually hear it.

But few, if any, applications and media actually employ this technique.

Worked for me, without headphones :D I don't have a good pair to test with, so can't speak for the headphone experience ?
