Here's a random quiz for you. Look at the USB ports on this motherboard IO panel:

And also this one:

What do these USB ports feature/support?

Spoiler

Black: USB 2.0

Blue: USB 3.0 (AKA SuperSpeed)

Teal: USB 3.1 Gen 2 (AKA SuperSpeed+)

Yellow: Charging port (sleep and charge)

Now take a look at this one:

Pretend you don't know what this port is on. Now can you tell me what features does this USB port support?

Spoiler

I sure as hell can't. Well, I can say it at least supports USB 2.0

This is why I kind of hate USB-C. The only thing good that came of it was the connector.

They could still have color coded it, they just chose not to :P USB in general is a bit of a mess, for example in the ports above there's no way of knowing if it's 3.1 gen 1 or 3.1 gen 2 and the charging port could be either 2.0, 3.0, 3.1 gen1 or 3.1 gen2 - all the yellow coding says is that it provides more power than other ports.

@Sauron For Type-A, you can tell if it's USB 2.0 or 3.0 by the pins. And on the female side, the extra pins are on the tab's edge.

Type B and Micro B are easier to figure out.
