What's worse, banks doing their thing, or a single person who holds the key to everyone's accounts, they suddenly die, and the key dies with them?

Sticking to the rules of this hypothetical scenario I'd have to say the man dying would be worse. At least in the event of banks doing their thing most people would still get to keep their money which would be to the benefit of the majority of the populous who have bank accounts.
