  1. So, I'll keep things brief and answer any questions as they come. I'm using a Synology NAS on a 1 Gb LAN for storing games (Steam, Origin, Uplay... etc). I have 3 gaming PCs one of which is a laptop with no Ethernet (yes tried USB ethernet, no this doesn't work for me). My current NAS setup works, mostly. On my two desktop PCs most games run straight of the NAS with only a small hit on load times. However, on my laptop with no Ethernet it's impossible to run any games off the NAS and I cap out at ~60 MB/s reads over wifi. Games that don't work over NAS at all (Doom, Guildwars 2 for example) appear to be affected by latency more so than other games. My current solution is to use SyncBack Pro to Sync a local copy of these games to my NAS, this allows me to keep those games updated on all machines with minimal disruption. There are issues with this as well, given that unattended file syncing is not perfect. However I'm looking for a more practical solution that will work even on my bandwidth limited laptop. I'd like to setup a client side automatic cache for the most frequently used games. I'm wondering if anyone has ever implemented a solution such as this for other purposes and had any tips/ideas to share. I'm hoping there's an easier way to do this otherwise I'll be forced to write something to do this on my own. To be clear, Im not concerned about write times to the NAS as much as I am concerned about reads on the client side. For writing to the drives I have a server which runs all my gaming clients and updates my games at specific times (when working/sleeping). So write times are not a concern.
  2. I have two rigs with almost identical peripherals. Razer Naga (x2) Razer Tartarus(x2) Corsair K65 Razer Black widow Razer Kraken Pro Non-Existent headset
  3. Yeah, I'd much rather go with an I5 for gaming than an i7 most of the time. Sorry but your friend is dead wrong on the idea that a pentium is the same as an i5 or i3. There is little benefit from an i7 when you consider you can over clock the i5 if need be. That's my opinion BTW.
  4. Correct me if I'm wrong but won't the new pascal GPUs have a much better sli bridge? I'd wait on pascal.
  5. This would actually work as I plan on getting more monitors (3 I want)... Prob will just replace the current ones also. Anyone have a cheaper mount solution? The desk is up against a wall, so wall mounting would work as long as I could adjust the monitors.
  6. I just wanted to clarify a few things people have already said. About the power supply, while 500w should be enough on a single card build there is a few things you should consider. Quality on PSUs is usually rated by a bronze to platinum level, this is a good indicator of the actual sustained load the PSU will handle. While the box may say 500w the sustained output may only be around 400w. So my recommendation is to get a 600w Gold rated PSU to account for any future upgrades and the normal degradation on the PSU. Personally unless you are running a setup with more than 2 modern GPUs you should be fine with this. If you are only planning on running a single 1070 then just get a gold rated 500w. If you plan on over clocking (that's what the K at the end of the processor # means) you will want a motherboard that supports it. If you don't plan on it there is no need for a K branded version of a CPU. I'd also highly suggest an SSD for your OS just so your PC boots fast. Infact I'd get a ~250gb SSD to start and then later add an HDD for additional storage as your game collection grows.
  7. If all you need is a PC for streaming, I'd go with a nuc or buy a set top box like he one from razer or nvidia. These will even allow you to stream games, much smaller and the nvidia one runs android. However, if you want a PC with a lot more power, I personally use the EVGA Hadron Air as its a good case win good airflow and won't require liquid cooling. I'm currently using this case with an i5 3570k, 8 GB GSkill ddr3, Asus P8Z77-I Deluxe/WD (chose this because it has optical out with DTS Connect. ), EVGA gtx 970 ssc and a Samsung 250 GB SSD and a Seagate 4 tb SSHD. Yea it's a little older hardware but I don't have any problems running games at 1080p on max settings. The case is small and I found doesn't need to be water cooled as long as you pick the right fans and a vertically aligned heatsink. I use the noctua dual tower CPu cooler. I'll put up pictures of my rig when I get home to give an idea of how this looks under a TV
  8. So I have two issues at hand. The first being that I need a dual monitor mount that anchors to my desk. My desk has a glass top so I'm worried the usual pressure brackets will break it. For my second issue, I recently purchased two Acer Monitors for my work desk. Needless to say I cheaped out and got the monitors refurbished for about $50 each (21" 1080p...). For the most part they serve a purpose but I can't get over the horrible contrast these monitors have. I already tried messing with the monitor menus/settings but no luck. So, I'm wondering.. Is it possible to improve on this issue by opening the monitors up and changing/adding some kind of light filters in? If so where can i buy them?
