    Update for anyone who cares:

The insurance inspection have determined it was some sort of electrical fault up in the loft (or attic) that has cause this fire. So much was destroyed that they can’t determine anything more. The current running theory is there was some kind of rodent that has freyed some wire.. who knows.

We have had so much support from family and friends. We have been housed for the time being. Everyone has been so generous.

The insurance also seems to be quite cooperative, and I believe they will pay out enough to cover all of the losses.

I have purchased a Lenovo Legion 5 laptop that was on a pretty awesome sale in my local area that is going to serve me perfectly. It’s not the same as my previous desktop, but I am absolutely happy with it and it’s performance. Whenever we get settled back into the house I am planning on designing a new setup with an external monitor that connects to the laptop.

I am also heading to the house sometime in the next few days to see if there are any of my Pop figures that are salvageable, so fingers crossed 🤞

Thanks to everyone for their messages of support.

You insinuate that there's a steep price drop for 64-bit cards. There isn't.

Cards rarely drop down below $50, so find the best thing you can get for $50 and laugh all the way to the bank. Go find a GTX 960 or some other Maxwell-based card. They aren't particularly good, but they're a LOT better than any GPU you're hoping to get. 😛

I know before updating the BIOS, I had all sorts of issues with my 5800X, similar to not clocking high enough in most apps.

Hang onto it. Considering you'd essentially be downgrading in every way going to any lesser card, I say just use the overkill card as long as you can. 😛

    Imglidinhere got a reaction from Eighjan in Vega 56 &/or HBM2 - pro's & con's.
At launch, the Vega 56 was about the level of a GTX 1070. Nowadays, the Vega offering is around the level of a 1080 because AMD slowly manages to tweak the drivers better and better over time. At least from what I've seen.

Yes, they are meant to be gaming cards, whoever told you that they weren't is dumb and wrong. The only cards not meant for gaming are Firepro and Quadro. Firepro is AMD's workstation offering and Quadro is Nvidia's workstation offering.

$250 for that card in May of 2019 was a reasonable price. They always held a bit of a premium over comparable Nvidia parts, but they generally performed a touch better in later years comparatively, in my experience. Only other card that would have made better sense might've been a GTX 1080 as it technically performs better in UE4 titles, and there are a LOT of those out nowadays.

The card should be able to handle 1440p no issue, though I doubt you'll push 144hz to maximum except on older titles.

    TL;DR It's a solid card even today. No one sane would dispute that. I was running a 1070 until I just swapped for a scalper's 1080. 😄

Hilarious, people can't understand context and only hear what they want.

    Breakdown tiiiiime:

    1) OP was looking at an 80 Plus PSU.
    2) I assumed every PSU he's looking at will be of an 80 Plus certification.
    3) Given the overwhelming number of 80 Plus Gold PSUs he has listed, it's hard to find a PSU that DOESN'T meet this criteria and/or that he'd ditch the 80 Plus moniker and buy some no-name brand.
    4) Using this line of thought, I recommended him to buy a higher wattage unit specifically because the price difference is not great enough to warrant spending less for a lower output offering unless his budget is that tight, under the assumption that he'd be buying an 80 Plus certified unit.

    TA-DAAA!

Nothing in this chain of posts has me saying to ignore the 80 Plus cert and buy a higher wattage, non-80 Plus PSU. Not one. Stop putting words in my mouth. There's no hidden, subliminal messaging going on here. xD

Imglidinhere got a reaction from DeadnightWarrior in which bang for your buck 80+ semi modular PSU would suit my PC?
It's nothing to do with "I would never use that much power" and more a matter of... why shortchange yourself? If you're intentionally limiting your PSU because you're trying to save pennies, that's silly. If you can't afford to purchase something more expensive, that's fine but that needs to be stated. I'm under the assumption that you had no budget since nothing was listed.

Also, PSUs are generally at maximum efficiency when they're at approximately 50% load. So if you're going to be pushing 365w through a 500w unit, you're outside the top efficiency curve. JohnnyGuru tests this sort of thing extensively. That and lower stress loads on a PSU tend to help it last longer. 🙂 Hope this helps.

No, there's no newer stepping and they can all pretty much hit 5GHz without issue.

As for Zen 2, no that's also untrue. The higher numbered chips in the stack are better binned and from there on it's simply silicon lottery on whether or not you can overclock better. Lotta factors with that one.

Though it's nice to see Nvidia no longer has zero competition in that field.

A 10600K benefits very heavily from fast RAM with tight timings. Also a heavy overclock to 5GHz will also greatly improve performance. The CPU won't bottleneck anything from the 20-series, so a 3070 would be fine for what you're looking at.

Ultra Details is not just for screenshots. Every game mentioned in my list has a staggering difference between High and Ultra settings for Texture Quality. If you think I'm lying, look at Mechwarrior 5 High and then Maximum and tell me there's not a crazy difference visually.

You do not want to cheap out on the power supply. It's the singular thing you should never skimp out on. It powers your whole PC, so if you get a bad unit, it can short out and can easily destroy your whole system.

I wouldn't spend less than $60 on a PSU and always go for no less than a 80 Plus Bronze rated model. A 550-watt option will be plenty for the 390.

The G14 is among the best laptops of 2020. You really can't go wrong with it.

I'd strongly suggest avoiding the XPS models. They suffer from severe thermal, power and DPC latency issues. The Dell QA work is also poor so they frequently arrive defective. Not to mention the problematic BIOSes that still can't seem to get fixed. Overall, the XPS models have been dropping in quality and while they once were great (in 2014) they are now pretty much bottom of the barrel for the windows premium laptop space.

May not be the "best" but reviews from tech peeps on YouTube were very positive regarding the machine. Thermals were good, performance is as good as it gets for the hardware under the hood, etc. I know other models were reviewed that are technically cheaper, but I honestly cannot find any of them.

All AMD machine here. Reviews show that the RX 5600M is equal to the vast majority of 2060 equipped machines and the 4600H often outpaces even Intel's mobile 8-core offerings so there's that. What you get from this machine is vastly greater than the Acer above so... that's a thing. GPU is a LOT more powerful.

Correct. Probably should have said "frametimes" rather than "framerate" but the point is the fact that an SSD will often make an equally large splash when added to any system. Even if a system has an SSD boot drive, having a game running on an SSD makes a whole world of difference.

Imglidinhere got a reaction from Im Weeb in Wondering why the performance of my pc didn't go up by much.
FPS absolutely. Frametimes matter and even Linus has noted that there is a substantial difference between HDD performance and SSD performance in games. I mean, I noticed a 10 FPS difference in some titles on weaker hardware than what I have now.

Also faster load times also directly correlates to better performance across the board. That's common misconception people never look past. Having an SSD will improve your drive's nominal operational rate. If you legitimately think there's zero improvement going from a spinner to an NVMe drive, you're wrong.
  23. Informative
Imglidinhere got a reaction from Im Weeb in Wondering why the performance of my pc didn't go up by much.
Ultimately the biggest change you can achieve in any system is how fast your storage is. If you went from a HDD to an all SSD setup, you'd see some framerate increases. More games are using more cores these days, and the frametime consistency will probably be the improvement you see in some areas, however it also heavily depends on exactly what games you play. Space Engineers, for example, doesn't use more than four threads... so having an upgrade from the 6700K to a 3800X won't see any improvement.

That and the 1070 is not bottlenecked by a 6700K no matter what anyone says... You'd need a more powerful GPU before you saw any serious gains and even then, we're talking 2080 territory before you see any potential bottlenecks come into play here, if that.

The newer chip is not 10% faster. If you're looking at the base clock, then sure, but the chips never sit at base clock.

The 8750H sits at 3.3GHz at 55w across all cores and 3.9Ghz at 4c/8t
The 9750H sits at 3.4GHz at 55w across all cores and 4Ghz at 4c/8t

That's a 100MHz increase and you will not see any level of performance increase from it. It also runs hotter because all they did was increase the clockspeeds. Intel TDP doesn't even line up appropriately, because it's never actually sitting at 45w for power draw, it's always well above that.

I'd like to make a point that yeah, it's a Max-Q 1060, but that's within 10% of a normal 1060 and can EASILY be overclocked to a desktop 1060 simply because these are binned parts. God know how many times @GeneXiS_X said that.
