  1. Hello everyone. I'm currently visiting Singapore and need to get a laptop, since I don't have a shipping address and my hotel won't receive packages in my name I'm stuck shopping from physical stores. I'm looking for a 15.6" budget gaming laptop to play stuff like MMOs (WoW, FFXIV) and some other not as intensive games. Also planning to do some basic programming and school work on it. It would be really nice if I could end up able to use Linux on top of win10 but not 100% required. Portability and "professional" looks are not a factor. I'm currently trying to decide between these 2 laptops: Acer Nitro 5 AN 515-54 DellG3 15 3590 They both have almost the same price at ~S$1300 and the same configuration of i5-9300h, gtx1650, 8GB RAM, 512Gb SSD (in a M.2 slot I think), 60hz 1080p display The major differences are 2x M.2 slots on the Acer vs 1x for the Dell, and the lack of SD card reader on the Acer. The extra M.2 slot would make me lean towards the Acer. Would I go wrong with any of these two? Are there some known issues with the models I'm unaware of? In short, which one would you guys recommend?
  2. Well, I'm shit out of luck, it's out of production and it sold out...it was the same spec wise. It was on a huge sale cause they needed to clear inventory apparently. I'm just gonna go ahead and grab a Huawei P10 lite tomorrow and hope it doesn't explode in my hands.
  3. Hey, thank you for the reply. I actually made a mistake and the honor 9 lite was an imported one, so not subject to local warranty and stuff... Also my options now also include a Xperia XZs SO-03J (180$) Which is the better choice between these? (Excluding the Honor 9 lite because yeah)
  4. My Nexus 6P motherboard fried while just out of warranty and I'm currently without a phone. I live in Japan and I need to get a replacement immediately. I'm looking for something: Available locally (Japan) Cheap (300$ max) SIM-free Android 7.0 (8.0 preferred) Reliable (No slowdowns, hangs) 3.55mm audio jack Not gonna buy used. I need to use banking apps that are VERY good at detecting roots so rooting is out of the question. I'd like it to have as little bloat as possible. Don't care that much about battery life since I'm carrying around a power bank anyways. Storage size is not important. I couldn't care less about the camera. I'm planning to get a flagship phone towards the end of the year but I need a quick and dirty fix right now. This is a short list of phones I've found around local shops that I can get. Huawei P10 Lite (200$) Huawei Honor 9 Lite (260$) Huawei Nova Lite 2 (210$) Asus Zenfone 4 Max (210$) Looking for a recommendation between these phones and/or other suggestions. Thank you in advance.
  5. I'm actually on my phone right now, but I got around 80Mbps down / 95Mbps up as of yesterday. You'd have to wait around 20h for an actual speedtest.
  6. I've recently moved to Japan and just setup an internet contract. Currently I'm getting fiber from the wall and it goes into a GEPON ONU that NTT (line supplier) gave me. For reference it looks like this one: https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTCMDV2D2ojJT0NhZm0mSGiUCYF9X_iN_GxfD91DVSnN7TvxA8 From what I understand this acts as a modem. From there I just use the Ethernet out to connect my PC. I've never had fiber before so I'm a little confused, right now to connect I have to use Windows 10's dial-up interface for a PPoE connection. Is there no way for it to work like ADSL ones where you just plug in the Ethernet cable and it works(after you configure it once)? Since my laptop doesn't have an Ethernet port I've bought some janky USB to Ethernet adapter, is that the cause? Since I want to connect more than a single Ethernet port allows me, I'm in the market for a wireless router, would the setup be equivalent to an ADSL line? Finally, do you guys have recommendations for routers? I was looking at the following: Netgear Nighthawk R7000 ~100$ ASUS RT-AC68U ~150$ TP-Link Archer C7 ~100$ All seem somewhat popular, would I go wrong with any of these? Thank you in advance.
  7. Thank you very much for the extremely quick replies guys. You've put my mind at ease.
  8. I'm building a new PC soon and I'm undecided between a few RAM options. The usage is about 50% gaming while streaming, 25% video editing in Sony Vegas / Premiere, 15% 3D modeling in Maya, 10% Photoshop/Illustrator. Motherboard would be an ASRock Z170 Extreme4 running an i7-6700k. The kits I'm looking at are Corsair LPX Vengeance 16GB x 2 sets of either: - CMK32GX4M2B3200C16 (3200Mhz 16-18-18-36) for ~200$ - CMK32GX4M2B3000C15 (3000Mhz 15-17-17-35) for ~200$ - CMK32GX4M2A2666C16 (2666Mhz 16-18-18-35) for ~145$ Note that I'm in Japan and the prices are approximations from yen. I've read about the topic a bit, but I'm still confused on how much do RAM frequency and timings impact daily usage. Do the higher frequency and lower latency justify a 55$ price difference? Would I actually benefit from picking the higher priced kits? tl;dr Which one do I buy?
  9. Thank you for the replies, The reason I was considering the HD598 over the HD558 is because the price difference is minimal (20€), but I just realized the mod is literally just removing a piece of foam, I think I can handle that. I think I'm leaning towards the 558/598 at this point.
  10. Greetings, I've been using the Razer Megalodon gaming headset for the past 5 years or so, and while it's fine for gaming I wanted to get a "real" pair of headphones. What I really like about the headset I have is how comfortable it is, I could wear it for 24h straight and have no issues with it. I listen to a lot of different genres of music from rock to classic to jazz to electronic. I've been reading a lot about specific sound signatures from headphones but I honestly can't really tell what I want out headphones, but I believe something towards warm sounding would work best in my case. Unfortunately I do not have the chance to go out and try a few pairs to see what I like. What I know is that I'm looking for a pair of open headphones and I'm planning to only use them at home, I don't have any AMP or DAC, they would be driven straight from my MoBo. Budget is around 200€ I can buy from either Italy (and by extension western Europe) or Japan. At the moment I was considering the following: Sennheiser HD 598 160€ on Amazon Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO 160€ on Amazon Regarding the HD598 I'm a bit concerned at how in the reviews I've read bass is noted as fairly weak. Regarding the DT990 Pro I'm worried about the potential harshness of the highs. I'd like opinions on both of these headphones and/or recommendations of other headphones. Thank you.
