  1. Yeah I've given them a pretty good scrub, Unfortunately I think there might be something wrong with the fan or cards fan connector, dunno. It used to be at first whenever I actually turned on my computer the gpu fan would immediately ramp to 100% no matter what. After Instead plugging the fan into the motherboard, it quieted down, but its still pretty loud. The rad itself sounds like it doesn't have too much liquid left in it so I'm not sure maybe there was some sort of leak. I'm a streamer so I really need the silence. I also do a lot of workstation tasks as a developer, so I'm thinking of upgrading in the future but that will have to wait till I can get the cash.
  2. Since your only doing WoW you shouldn't need too much horsepower, im surprised you got those results with a 960, though i'm guessing your cpu is holding you back. It's honestly kinda difficult to upgrade with that what with having to buy a new cpu, mobo, and ram. Though I'd check around on newer pentiums where theyre around $60~. Again with that you'd need a new mobo so you're looking at another $60~. After that you can't reuse your old DDR2 Ram you'll need DDR4 most likely so another $50-60 for 8gb of ram. Sorry but you'd be lookin at a price tag of around $170 or more, if thats not in your price range you might want to look at used pc's on ebay and check for some newer generation cpu's.
  3. about two years ago I believe is when I bought my EVGA 980TI hybrid, it's been pretty ok being able to handle whatever I really throw at it which isn't much. Right now I'm fairly certain the hybrid AIO is about done. My temps are getting a bit hot and more than that the whole thing is incredibly noisy. I can't stream at all without it's fan ramping to 100% during gameplay. So with the EVGA hyrbid PCB is there a replacement cooler I could use anybody knows? It does NOT need to be another Hybrid cooler, in fact I'd rather it not be. Could I purchase a sort of reference 980ti cooler and slap it on instead? I'd much prefer it over the liquid cooling at this point. Thanks for any help!
  4. Good point, i guess i got caught up in the idea of a workstation card. It might be awhile before I get the cash for a new card, so i might just wait for the next architecture volta. Are there any manufacturers more known for silent graphics cards? Like do you know any use more silent fans than others?
  5. The dark rock pro 3 is a great idea, but is it able to mount with am4? I tried googling it to find out but couldnt find any info. It means id also have to buy new ram too since theres no way my dominator platinums are going to fit. Could I even maybe go fanless if i'm not going to overclock? Linus did it in one of his ultimate silent pc videos.
  6. So I really love streaming, it's an amazing way to meet some cool people and share what you love. Only problem is I don't really have the optimum setup for it. My current PC is great but just a taddd... jet engine like. It's served me well, however I always groan at the loud noise when i'm recording, embarrassed of the poor audio quality, though it's all I have. I am also getting more and more into 3d game development and my 980ti is fine for this as right now I haven't delved too far into the world of vr creation or anything of that sort. Anyways, what I want is a silent workstation PC built from my current rig. Here is the basics of what I have now: A i76700k on a 280mm liquid cooler, and a EVGA 980ti Hybrid. It's pretty noisy. So I want to make it quieter while not completely breaking the budget, at least not right now. Heres my current plan: - Swap the case for a Fractal Define S with no window side panel. - Swap the cooler for a Noctua NH-D15 - (In the future switch to a workstation wx7100 card and a ryzen 1700-1800x) My main concerns is how to set the system up for optimum cooling while being silent as possible. I'm looking for help from any fellow workstation users or fractal s owners. My original Idea (and i'll try to illustrate this as best as possible), is to have the nh-d15 facing downwards with both fans going vertically, then having the exhaust in the back pulling air. I don't know if this is really a good setup but I heard from another forum it worked well. Problem is I own some very tall ram, 32gb of it, which I would prefer not to just throw away. It's Corsair Dominator Platinum. I heard even with the heatsinks removed they are still rather large. Any help with that? Would mounting the cooler vertically leave any room? The other thing is my 980ti hybrid, should I mount it's cooler in front? I don't know if there would be much room with it in the back exhaust for the cooler. Thanks for any help anyone can give.
  7. Looking for screws for radiator fans for the 280mm H110I and the EVGA hybrid's 120mm. I bought some machine screws from walmart but sadly they were much to thick to screw into the holes. Would these work?: XSPC Radiator Screw Set, #6-32 UNC, 30mm, Black, 16-pack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015BSAQ0O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_9PwCyb2JJ9W51 Thanks for any help you guys can provide!
  8. Most likely it could be reused, though I'd recommend having it replaced. After three years most likely some of the liquid inside the loop has evaporated which isn't going to let it function very well. AIOs unfortunately can't be reused as much as air coolers, you could refill the loop yourself, but it would be easier and probably safer just to buy a new loop.
  9. Was gonna say, dayum lol, besides the 9590 is literally just a overclocked 8350.
  10. I cannot advise you enough to wait for the new zen processors as they will most likely have massive performance gains over AMD's current line of chips, but if he needs the build right now then I'd build something like this, though if your willing to wait for zen just replace it with the most recent zen processor and mobo ALSO DDR4 ram as this DDR3 wont work with zen of course: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/DTjxgL I myself am American, so I don't have too much experience with UK prices, but this seems to be pretty damn good. Waiting for Zen would definitely help this build out in performance, though this should theoretically be able to achieve 60fps 1080p on Ultra. The RX480 is a great card, honestly it does run a bit hot, but it's still a great deal. I recommend it a lot. The Phanteks case is great, a personal favorite as it offers an amazing look while being cheap and having plenty of space for cable management and expansion. The acrylic window is great cheap bling. I tried to go more color neutral, but you could easily swap out the mobo or ram for a different color scheme without much affect on price if he wanted something particular. With the extra money left over he could buy a monitor, or some led strips and custom sleeve cables. LG offers some 1080p freesync monitors for the UK, I can't find any listings for them, but I highly recommend them as it'll give him an amazing buttery non stutter gameplay experience.
  11. Thanks! I know motherboard vrm cooling really doesn't make too much of a difference I just wanted help in knowing how to incorporate it into a loop, thanks so much
  12. I don't believe you'd really need to take advantage of it. Thunderbolt is a input that allows 10gb transfer speeds, BLAZING FAST, though in honesty there isn't too much you can use it with unless you maybe own a iphone or macbook, these use the same connection. The only thing I could see you using it for is if you were willing to shell out cash for a hugely expensive thunderbolt black magic capture device for streaming and recording. I cant seem to find the price on it right now, but I remember it being around the $1000~ dollar range. Anyways, it's a good feature if you maybe owned a Macbook or Iphone for data transfers and charging, but not much else. I'd say not to shell out the extra cash for it if its more expensive over other non thunderbolt motherboards.
  13. So for awhile I've had the pleasure of owning the Maximus VIII Formula Mobo. It's actually been a great experience for me at least. Though I admit a problem overclocking my 6700k, but I believe I just got a bad processor out of the batch unfortunately or maybe just the shit end of the silicon stick. ANYWAYS, So i'm looking to use it in a new build with a custom loop, I've actually worked on hardline loops before, though to be honest not all that much, still. I'm confused on how I would build my loop to use the VRM coolers built into the mother board. EKWB partnered with ASUS to include this and I'd like to take advantage of it. Has anyone done a custom loop build with this mobo before, any advice? Any videos of people doing it? I just need to know the direction the loop would go. Thanks for any help
  14. So I can just buy a $189 used perfectly working server with a great raid controller with a battery, including redundant power supplies? Fuck yeah better believe i'd rather go for it. Thanks for the recommendations. I just might need suggestions on what raid configuration to go with it, any help there? I'd like redundancy but speedy.
  15. I'm pretty confident in my tinkering abilities , this would be using linux. Are you sure on the server board? Would there be no benefits from ECC memory? Also would something like a e3 xeon be enough cpu power for 10gbe? Also I want to be able to access the NAS through wireless to access files from my laptop, are you against the security concerns with wireless or something?
  16. RAID: I don't really recommend a RAID 0 of SSDs not because it's "dangerous" because it's really not, it's limited by SATA III speed so you won't be getting very much improvement over just one SSD. I'd recommend instead going for a Samsung 950 pro: https://goo.gl/1tIUJx It's about the same price as those SSDs combined and will give you WAY faster performance. And yes you could totally easily use the HDD as a backup, many use this solution. PCI: Yes you should be able to fit a wireless adapter in with SLI on the z170A. I'd maybe use a usb wireless dongle instead, but it's your choice. Monitor: The GPU for the monitor should be fine, and no you could add a lower or higher resolution monitor and have no conflicts. You can run the game at the native resolution of either monitor you choose to play on. Overclocking: This is what really confuses me, your H100i v2 is not going to cool your GPU, just your CPU. That cooler will give you great overclocks on the CPU for sure, but I'm not so sure if it would really be worth it over a lower tier cooler. For SLI, I wouldn't worry too much. If you're looking for cooling performance it shouldn't make much of a difference in SLI. You might want to add some more intake fans to get some more positive cooling in the case but, yeah. Go ahead and the cooling will be fine.
  17. http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Rangerlunis/saved/kFWZLk So here is the idea for a new NAS build. The thing that mainly worries me is the RAID controller, I've heard bad things about cheap RAID controllers but this seems to have decent specs. The idea is to use the SSD tiering software to move my most recently used files to the pair of SSD's. That's how I was explained SSD tiering works? The 10gb NIC will be connected over to my main rig with another NIC for speedy file transfer. A wifi adapter is added for wireless access. One other thing, I don't really understand how RAID controller batteries work, could you just hook one up to any controller? I'm guessing not and it's only a option for controllers that offer it. The machine will be hooked up to a UPS. This NAS is a little pricey but compared to the synology NAS which is diskless for $600 I think it's a good price range. Thanks for any help.
  18. Synology NAS seems great! A little expensive, but will keep it in mind.
  19. Yes, but google drive is limited to 1tb for most users, paying 99.99 a month for 10tb is pretty expensive. Personally I'm not a fan of google accounts themselves.
  20. So I am a web and software developer, and my projects pile up pretty quickly, and of course I want to be able to share them with others. Here are my main problems: -Being able to host/share files on the internet and with others -Having a 4tb backup with redundancy So really I can't find a good way to share my projects with others, I don't want to have to use a unreliable website like megaupload or mediafire, I find these solutions are just annoying and can frequently fail. How can I share my projects safely and effectively? The other problem is finding a good 4tb backup NAS. The WD cloud mirror seemed alright at first, but a bit expensive in my opinion. I just want a nas enclosure with RAID support and dual ethernet if possible. Thanks for all the help.
  21. So in summary, there isn't a lot of good documentation for Vulkan. While it is an amazing API i'm sure there just isn't enough resources for learning it just like it's predecessor OpenGL. I'd like to thank everybody for these answers as they are all super helpful and useful. For anyone looking for more resources, I found a cheap $6.00 book on Amazon that is worth a read: https://goo.gl/5zgmVc While I personally can't say if the book is really good at explaining Vulkan in detail, it's only $6.00 and is worth it in my opinion to pick up and skim through. As explained in the comments above, vulkan isn't where anyone should be starting out. While I don't think anyone should be making their first project with vulkan, it doesn't hurt to study and learn for the future. I plan on using this experience to become a even better programmer. If anyone has more resources they'd like to share please do and i'll ad them into this post. Thank you
  22. seriously THANKS thats way more helpful! This organizes the information in a much better way for me instead of having to click on hundreds of hyperlinks trying to find one thing. Thank you
  23. Totally. I guess most of the hate would come from the lack of good resources.
