  1. I permanently switched to Xubuntu 3 years ago and am currently running 15.10 (the latest) on 5-6 systems. I still have a Windows laptop i keep around for windows-specific stuff and apps that don't have linux support, but i abuse the crap out of it and don't even bother keeping it updated with virus definitions etc. Updating takes FOREVER, chews up a ton of bandwidth, and often leaves the system in worse shape than before.
  2. All About Circuits (i like this site a lot) http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/ MAKE: Electronics by Charles Platt (I have this book. Pretty good for a beginner.) http://www.amazon.com/Make-Electronics-Discovery-Charles-Platt/dp/0596153740 "So You Want to Build Electronics" - this blog helped get me started. Have all the books he recommends http://blog.thelifeofkenneth.com/2011/06/so-you-want-to-build-electronics.html Good luck.
  3. I don't mind using a smartphone for taking pictures; in fact I prefer it. What gets me is that the app always has the shutter toggled by a button on the screen instead of a physical button on the side like, say, a CAMERA.
  4. One thing that bothers me about LTT is the fact that too much of the WAN show is just Linus and Luke being silly and sharing oddball anecdotes that don't really lead anywhere. Its honestly why I stop watching live and can't sit through more than 20 minutes of the archive.
  5. 8 laptops (7 Xubuntu 15.04/1 Win7) 4 Desktops (2 Xubuntu 15.04, 2 Win7)
  6. 49/31 PASS. Complete and utter guessing.
  7. Looks like a bunch of LGA 775 OptiPlex parts. Standard for educational institutions. Not crying over the HDDs much either. Maxtor has personally brought me nothing but pain and sadness. I say good riddance. The only crime here is the crime of messiness. I mean, they couldn't find a box for that stuff? ugh
  8. I use Xubuntu on 3 laptops and two desktops. Its easy to use, most things work out of the box and its relatively lightweight. My recommendation is that you choose a distro that based on Ubuntu (ubuntu, xubuntu, lubuntu, kubuntu).
  9. ok i get that this is irritating, but you have to understand that most people aren't tech-enthusiastic like us. I little bit of sympathy plus letting go of your ego will help out a lot in these situations.
  10. I guess he's entitled to his own opinion. Linux isn't perfect but is getting better by the day. I personally prefer Xubuntu, which is based on Ubuntu but uses the xfce desktop environment and is a damned near perfect replacement (or companion) to Windows 7. In fact i have it installed on 3 laptops and 2 desktops. I personally don't see the appeal of Debian. I like things to work out of the box instead of having to install this and that all the time. Rarely on Xubuntu have I run into a situation where something didn't work or wasn't installed by default. Its relatively light on resources (unlike Linux Mint), isn't weighed down by inane bells and whistles (like KDE), and the xfce desktop environment is lightweight and DEAD SIMPLE TO USE because it sticks to the traditional desktop metaphor instead of using stupid resource hogging shells like GNOME 3 or Unity. I also abandoned Linux Mint because its software repo, well, sucked. Windows > Xubuntu > Android > Any Apple product. Being totally honest. I tried to use an iPad once and just gave the f*** up. Locked down garbage.
